Hey all!
Suddenly my GDR-3120L started to produce ear tearing grounding noise when almost any CD/DVD is inserted. It sounds like somebody would really grind the inserted DVD in there.
I opened it up and everything is clean, moving freely, no stuck parts and media is not scratched.
Audio CD's still play OK (but grinding is still present). DVD's don't.
I suspect that the problem is the brushless motor. Any1 had similar problem?
Best regards

The most likely scenario is that the spindle magnet came off, glue it back in place and you're good to go.

Hey Maruti!
Thank you for great tip! I'll examine and report back!

have you done any rubber band MOD before (because of open tray/unplayable)? If yes that might become loose...
If not, next time check the micro switch (near the motor spindle) it might be broken...

Hey all!
PROBLEM SOLVED!
Amazing, but magnet that is embedded in plastic media holder on the motor broke off and was was stuck to top plate of DVD unit. Took me some time, to see that it was in wrong place (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
A bit of 5min epoxy and problem solved (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
How this could broke off...I don't know....But that is crappy quality if you ask me.
Picture is worth thousand words:

where abouts is this spindle that comes off as I have a v78 drive with exactly the same problem this could save me a lot of hassle if that is all it is, I will have to dismantle the drive to have a look but a little guidance would be appreciated. Also is the glue a permanent fix or does it only last a short time.
