CLIFFS NOTES:
_____________________________________________________________________________-
-My patched firmware gives me the "To play this game, put it in a xbox360" message with both backups and originals.
-My backup firmware gives me an error screen, and a red light.
-APPARENTLY something went wrong during ripping the original firmware.
-Is there ANYTHING i can do? There's much more info in the full post. But i was kind of rambling, because i'm literally sick to my stomache right now with stress.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh man, this is turning into a nightmare.
I bought a brand new 360 premium. Zephyr mobo, benq drive.
Tried it first to see if it worked. It did.
Promptly tore it apart, hooked it up to my nforce pc, dumped fw using dosflash32.
Made a backup copy of my original firmware.
Used the 'fast' firmware to make a modded firmware.
Used dosflash32 to flash the new firmware. 25-30 seconds later, done.
With the modded fast firmware, got the 'to play this game, put it in a xbox360 error' oh crap!
Flashed my backup stock firmware onto the drive... BRICKED! Got the XBOX360 error screen and single red-light on boot!!!!
Took me about 2-1/2 hours to get dosflash32 to reckognize the drive again after this. I had to play around with plugging the drive in before the pc booted, after it booted, pluggin it in turned on, etc. etc. etc. and then i finally got it to show up again, but.....
Tried using my backup to create a new fast firmware, new quiet firmware, and both work once again, but give me the 'place this game in an xbox360' error.
Looks like something happened while ripping the firmware originally, and now all seems lost.
What happened? What can i do? What could i have done to be more safe? There was nothing that happened during the firmware rip that would make me suspect a problem. I had to do the power off/power on trick 2x to get dosflash32 to work, but then everything went perfectly.
I'm bumming out right now. I have no good firmware. Is there a way to manually extract my key from the fubarred firmware and manually patch a new one? I'm getting sick to my stomache, i'm so stressed out right now.
I have years of cross-flashing and firmware modification experience, with relatively no problems thus far. I can't believe i messed this up!

Open the orig.bin with fw toolbox and see if it's corrupted.

Open the orig.bin with fw toolbox and see if it's corrupted.
if it is, he might be screwed, how do you know if it's corrupted or not?
BTW: nforce chipset aren't meant to be used with Dosflash32, it's not been confirm yet.
-
It should either pop up with error message (unsupported .bin file) or the key will have a bunch of 000 and FFF
-
i originally did get an unsupported fw message, but i was using an old version of toolbox.
waiting for the new version to finish downloading right now.
tense...

UG, nobody has fwtb 4.5, and 4.0 says it's an unsupported file.
maybe it's just corrupt. does 4.0 support benq?
-
what's the size of the orig.bin?

its the right size get fwtb 4.5 then check again because 4.0 is not going to work
-
GOOGLE to the rescue!!!
"The latest BenQ drive is not supported by the 360 Firmware Tool and can only be spoofed by manual editing the final firmware"
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hahahahaha
could this be an answer? I almost crapped my pants tonight.
I still don't know how to hex-edit, let alone get my 360 working again.

Get fw toolbox 4.5 . That should work.
-
your not spoofing but get 4.5 because it works for me
-
i've been trying to find it. nobody hosts anything newer than 4.0
-
FW is good.
key: 6B24C1AA0491C2EDBDF9E5A26725B24A
No FFF or 000, phew.
So what is going wrong?
Is it a problem with dosflash32 and my system?
Or is my FW just not supported yet?
-
ok now that we got that out of the way how are you creating you hacked firmware
also how are you flashing in windows or in dos
-
i copy the orig.bin to the 'fast' folder, and run the make firmware command.
then it creates a 2nd .bin inside the folder.
i've been flashing in windows...... i left my flash drive at work...
do you have a dos boot-cd you'd recommend?
-
hmm and you flashed the drive with the one that says benq-ix.bin. i would try flashing in dos
no sorry i use a flash drive (more reliable)
-
alright, i'm gonna try and find a dos boot-cd.
i appreciate your help. i was really freaking out.
i'll at least be able to sleep tonight knowing i still have an ok firmware.
this may take a while. my dos skills are rusty.
if i don't get back here till tomorrow, i really appreciate all your help, everyone.
-
i'm having the same problems.... did all reading, writing, erasing in dosflash16.
made firmware in win xp using the bat commands. using fast firmware. having the SAME problems. i have yet to try a backup (its burning right now) however originals do not run. no weird flashing colors on the xbox for me. i will try to flash with quiet n see if that works. sorry for the fragmented sentences.
also, i used this tutorial here. http://forums.xbox-s...howtopic=628061
also used fwtb 4.5 and i get a key. everything looks fine. gonna try n flash quiet n see if it works...
-
problem fixed. i manually patched serial and key in firmtool with the fast version and original runs fine now. backup gives dirty disk problem. i'm fairly sure backup is bad. gonna try n figure out what's up.
the drive is MOST DEFINITELY noticeably louder. oh well...
-
everything works fine for me now. forza 2 backup is perfect. using quiet manually patched with firmtool.

wow if you cant find xbins I mean toolbox you shouldnt be flashing your drive at all
-
i am well aware of that site. they have an info file listed for 4.5 but no url.
i pulled the file off of my news-server, tho, and all is well.
to the last poster ^^ that's fantastic news, man. looks like the newest firmware isn't supported by the automatic patcher, is all.
So you just used fwtb 4.5 to manually patch your key to the fast firmware? And it works now?
What program did you use to flash?
Thanks in advance.

key: 6B24C1AA0491C2EDBDF9E5A26725B24A
good job telling ms now you are banned buddy!
-
hahaha, sorry mr. gates
i used the firmware toolbox to manually patch the slow firmware, and now it works!
i can't get it to boot backups, but i'm gonna go to the store and buy some nice verbatim dl +r's and see if it's my discs.
Thanks everyone.
-
i used firmtool, not fwtb 4.5 to manually patch the key. this is what i did:
1. i kept orig.bin on my floppy, put firmtool on there, and also benq-iXa.bin *yes i used the fast one, but in my last post i said i used quiet*
2. in dosflash i erased the drive.
3. then i ran this command: "firmtool.exe orig.bin benq-iXa.bin"
4. went right back into dosflash. chose my benq vad6038, W for write, then enter. typed in "benq-iXa.bin"
5. tried it out, worked perfect, called it a night. if you use fast it is NOTICEABLY louder.

Heyman, first of all "Carlitosbaby" was trying to help you, you just didnt get what he was saying!
Second, I only use verbatim dvd´s. NO OTHER DISC´S GET ACCESS IN TO MY 360´S. Verbatim rules! So dont use those cheap shitty dvd´s, they often dont work and in some cases can damage youre laser.
-
Just wanted to update.
Picked up some 2.4x verbatim dvd+r dl discs, and now life is beautiful.
A little noisy, which makes me think the drive is working harder than it should.
Other than that, it was 3-4 hours of problem-solving well spent. Well spent indeed.
-
good to hear. I'm probably going to flash a friend's elite pretty soon and it'll be my 1st benq.
-
man, contact a mod and ask them to remove your key from the 2 places it is listed on this thread.....

I did.
In the meantime, is it normal for the dvd-drive in the 360 to actually sound like it's loading something while watching in-game videos?
I mean, i wouldn't expect the laser to have to move much at all while simply playing an in-game video, but it sounds like it's tracking quite a bit. It doesn't speed up to full speed or anything, but it sounds like it's working a lot harder than it should.
Is this typical for a 360?
