Title: Zsnexbox v1.5/v1.6
Post by: nes6502 on June 16, 2006, 06:46:00 PM
ZsnexBox 1.5

I was going to wait until I had more features added, but after I fixed the crash bug I decided I wanted to get this out as soon as possible.

What's new:

-FINALLY fixed the bug where supported games would sometimes not start or crash the XBOX.

-Added support for HD modes 720p and 1080i. These are only selectable if the correct cables are used and are enabled in the dashboard. 480i/480p is still the default video mode used unless it is changed. These take affect immediately and both the GUI and the in game emulation are rendered in these resolutions. This setting is saved to the ini, so if something doesn’t work, you can always delete the ini to have ZsnexBox start in 480i/480p.

If you have a problem with the default 480p/480i code and you have support for 720p or 1080i, you can change this line in the ZsnexBox.ini

HDMode=X

X is 1 for 720p or 2 for 1080i

-Removed the width limitation of the ROM browser when the video mode is set to 720p or 1080i.

-New video filters added:
     None - with  25% scanlines
     None - with  50% scanlines
     None - with 100% scanlines
     Interpolation
     Interpolation - with  25% scanlines
     Interpolation - with  50% scanlines
     Interpolation - with 100% scanlines
     High resolution Mode 7
Advance MAME 2X with High resolution Mode 7 (very CPU intensive)
Simple 2X with High resolution Mode 7

-Added 3 key combinations. They are:

L Trigger + Back = Save State
R Trigger + Back = Load State
Back + Start = Exit Emulation

-Added option to disable key combinations in the General Options menu.

-Lowered the default background music volume.

-Added two more sound effects to the GUI

-Added support for New Graphics Engine Enabled/Disabled (needed to fix graphics problems in some games like Fatal Fury Special, Super Punchout, and others). This can only be changed after a game is started.

-Added option for Old Graphics Mode 2

-Added option for greyscale rendering (can only be set before a game is started)

-When exiting a game a small screenshot is displayed on the options menu

-Screenshot saving added. All previous previews must be copied to the "prev" folder that is created in E:\ZsnexBox.

-Added option to take low resolution (256x224) or high resolution/filtered (512x448) screenshots. For the fastest rom browsing use low resolution screenshots.

-Added option to hide file extensions in the ROM browser

-Added option to display zip file contents when ROM browsing. There is a small lag with this feature turned on.

-Added reverse stereo to the sound options menu.

-MUCH faster screenshot preview loading

-Added option to change the max number of Rewind states (0-25 states). Rewind states should be set to 0 if not using the rewind feature. This will increase the emulation speed.

-Added option to change the time interval between rewind states (0-40 half seconds) .

-Added option to disable the in game volume control

-Added Pro Action Replay code support. Up to 15 codes per game can be used. These can be entered/edited in the emulator and are saved to the cheat directory (created by ZsnexBox).

Game.par = Name of the cheat file

  The contents of Game.par are:

AAAAAAAA:B:Enter Code Description Here (27 characters max)

AAAAAAAA = The Pro Action Replay Code
  B = On (1) or Off (0)

15 entries can be added to this file or created in the emulator.

-Added Game Genie code support. Up to 15 codes per game can be used. These can be entered/edited in the emulator and are saved to the cheat directory (created by ZsnexBox).

Game.ggn = Name of the cheat file

  The contents of Game.ggn are:

AAAAAAAA:B:Enter Code Description Here (27 characters max)

AAAAAAAA = The Game Genie Code (Do not put the "-". i.e. AAAAAAAA is correct but AAAA-AAAA is NOT correct)
  B = On (1) or Off (0)

Up to 15 entries can be added to this file or created in the emulator. If you create the file outside of ZsnexBox, you don’t have to type all 15 entries in the file. Make sure you hit “Enter” once after the last cheat code line.

-Added reset game to the options menu

-Removed the dimmed screen image used in screen resizing.

-When resizing the screen, the left analog moves the screen (with a locked aspect ratio) and the right analog stick resizes it.

-Better menu separation.

-Added a separate menu for:
Video Options
Sound Options
General Options
Controller Options
GUI Options
Cheat Codes (Only available after a game is started)

-Pressing "B" on any screen will return to the previous screen.

-Most values in the option screens can be increased with "A" and decreased with "X"

-Button "Y" is used to access the Options screen from the ROM browser.

-Changed the color of the text on the resize screen to make it easier to read.

-Added option to disable the ROM information when starting a game.

-Added analog stick deadzone calibration. This is a global analog deadzone that will affect all controllers. I had two controllers that seemed to have a mind of their own. It was almost imposiible to resize the screen with the offical controller S I have. This fixes the problem. The default value is 0.24. I found that a value of 0.54 works well for me.

-The background music volumne is now saved to the ini.

-The initial ROM directory can be changed in the RomPath.ini. For example:

D:\Roms (D: is the current directory where default.xbe is)

    or

    E:\Emulators\xSnes9x 1.42\Roms

    or

    E:\Emulators\ZsnexBox 1.5\Roms

    or

R:\Roms  (R: is the directory to use for an XBOX formated (made from an xISO) CD\DVD.

C:\ (The backslash must be included here)

-Various speedups

-I also included the default.xbe (in the just_for_fun folder) that I had when I made the first post announcing ZsnexBox. I thought some people might like to see what I had and compare it to what it is now. I disabled the debug output for this build. Put a game in the folder and name it "rm.zip". This folder can be deleted if not wanted.

----------------------------------------

******PLEASE NOTE********:

If you use cheat codes that modify SRAM (they usually (but not always) start with 70 for PAR), it is very possible to corrupt the sram file. I’m not sure if Game Genie codes can modify sram. So if you are going to use cheats on a game that you have been playing for a while, I recommend backing up the “Game.srm” file before using sram codes (I recommend making a backup just to be sure regardless).

Don’t forget that sram is always saved when exiting to the in-game menu, so the old sram file will be overwritten with the new data (with or without the cheat code changes). So if you enter an sram code that would corrupt the save file, and then start the game, the only way to not overwrite the old save file would be to turn off the Xbox with the power button (and not exit the game).

If a PAR code doesn’t work (most Final Fantasy 3 PAR codes on the net are wrong), use the fix code option in the emulator. If the code still doesn’t work, then it either requires another code(s), is for a different version of the game, or is just wrong.

----------------------------------------

Installation:
-Unzip the archive
-Copy to your Xbox or burn to a CD/DVD (overwrite all the old files if upgrading because they have changed)
-delete the E:\ZsnexBox\ZsnexBox.ini if upgrading.
-run default.xbe. It will create all the new folders.
-You can also create an “E:\ZsnexBox\prev” folder and copy your screenshots over first.
-It is also easier to create the cheat files in advance (on your PC) and copy them over.

These are example cheat file contents:

Pro Action Replay Cheat File:
The file is named: Contra II - The Alien Wars (U)(!).par
The contents are:

01802EDD:0:Infiinite Lives Side view levels
019B91DD:0:Infinite bombs Side view levels
029695DD:0:Infiinite Lives Top view levels
0291BEDD:0:Infinite bombs Top view levels

Game Genie Cheat File:
The file is named: Contra II - The Alien Wars (U)(!).ggn
The contents are:

22BBAD01:0:Infinite lives--side-view levels
2264D760:0:Infinite bombs--side-view levels

Do not put the "-".

Both of these files are put in the "E:\ZsnexBox\cheat" folder. You do not have to put all 15 entries in the file, but no more than 15 are read.

----------------------------------------

Thanks:
-Xport for all the code and help (screenshots, HD, zipfile contents)
-Foe-Hammer for testing HD
-GogoAckman for help with filters
-Nach for some assembly help
-Byuu for help with the SNES memory map
-And anyone else I forgot.

ZsnexBox 1.6:

The "save GUI background audio" feature wasn't in 1.5. It is in this upgrade.

A very nice mix of polish and added features. The GUI improvements are worth the update alone, I only hope that Wesker person updates his skin to reflect on the changes of 1.5

I put the xbe in my folder, and deleted the snes.ini

"-Unzip the archive

-delete the E:\ZsnexBox\ZsnexBox.ini if upgrading."

I did that, and when i launch it, nothing happens.

There is no snes.ini

Did you copy 1.5 files over first, and then the 1.6 upgrade? Is the RomPath.ini in the folder with the default.xbe? Did you copy the media folder over the old one? What do you mean nothing happens?

The folder should have:

<media>
<Roms>
default.xbe
RomPath.ini

1.6 is not an upgrade to 1.0-1.4. It is an upgrade to only 1.5. If you don't have the 1.5 files, it won't work.

Right I tried it out, lovely. The same bugs for some games still exist as they did in 1.4, but I guess this is due to the core. Love the interpolation filter, with flicker filter 0, no soften and bilinear hardware, I would say this is as close as it gets to looking like a real Snes in RGB, I doubt you could tell much difference side by side. Just the right amount of blur to stop everything looking like cheap cardboard cutouts, and gives a nice full, rich effect to the games as I remember them. It's lush.  love.gif

The following settings don't get saved (there may be more):
  - Reverse stereo
  - Hide file extensions
  - The last accessed rom directory.

Also, enabling show FPS does not cause the FPS to be
displayed. Only when explicitly entering the menu and
setting it again will. This seems to be present in earlier
versions too.

Otherwise, a great update.

Other than a few missed bugs, v1.6 is a significant step forward for Zsnexbox.  The GUI updates are most impressive.

Update:

The following settings don't get saved:

- Reverse stereo - confirmed
- Hide file extensions - confirmed
- Show FPS - confirmed
- The last accessed rom directory
- Volume level
- In-game audio adjust

Other known bugs:

- Screen size misreported

I also have a suggestion to make. Even after disabling In-Game Audio Adjust, the last known volume setting becomes the default. Whether this is intentional, I don't know, but it's an excellent idea. The only problem is that the volume settings reset each time you close the emulator.

Take him not bad nes6502 it is only a subject of discution OK

but keep the good work nes6502

Don't expect any core improvements until nes decides to add multi-core support.  A core change is the only way to fix some of the bugs, but a switch to another core will fix some games and break others.  The current core is arguably the best overall core available.

In the meantime, continue to use Xsnes9x if that's what works best for you.

Let's look at this ANOTHER WAY

Zsnexbox is not a general port of Zsnes. It's not updated along with the Linux, Windows or DOS ports. It's not regularly worked on by the Zsnes team. Zsnexbox is currently a port of Zsnes W.I.P. 2-28-05. That's it. The bugs that you've been reporting didn't leave because they are a part of Zsnes W.I.P. 2-28-05. Don't believe me? Go download that for your operating system and see if those same bugs are there? When you first came here and made a thread about Mickey Mania having the problem during the moose chase and I tested it and told you it was the core, I tested it on Windows, not on Zsnexbox. Now, what does that mean for you? These bugs and glitches that are present on Zsnexbox are a GOOD THING. Unless you've found glitches that are not part of the PC versions of Zsnes W.I.P. 2-28-05, which is the kind of thing that actually needs to be reported, that means Zsnexbox is running Zsnes W.I.P. 2-28-05 EXACTLY like it should be. Between 1.3+ and above along with 1.2 and below (which used a different core) I don't know if there have been any game specific bugs that have been a result of the ports being faulty. That should give you the confidence that with these perfect ports plus someone who is devoted and talented as nes6502 to their work and  knowing that multiple-core or standalone version of Zsnexbox are on their to do list (meaning Zsnexbox will become a port of the best of Zsnes cores and not just of Zsnes W.I.P. 2-28-05) that someday Zsnexbox will be the Snes experience. Personally, not just of Xbox but of emulation in general.

I'm really not trying to sound harsh to you or anything. What I'm really trying to do is ease your mind and know that, these bugs are expected, known and suppose to be there right now. Things are running smooth in the core department. Things are as they should be. You mention these things over and over again and now I hope you won't have to because I hope you understand what's going on a little better. What would be good to report on are things that don't match up between the pc version of Zsnes W.I.P. 2-28-05 and Zsnexbox, problems with features not working and other gui bugs. Those are the things that nes6502 will need to know.

I have not tested this out on Zsnexbox but go to donkey kong country 2 and turn it on and off. I think the the front game menu shouldn't show on the old graphics engine. Don't quote me on this.

Sort of right, it doesn't highlight your selections with it off.

This folder can be deleted if not wanted.

Whoa what a list of tweaks!
This is a brand new port, and yet progressing at the speed of light. Not a single reasonable person could be unimpressed. Zsnexbox plays a few games that Xsnes9x doesn't and Xsnes9x plays a few that zsnexbox doesn't. Zsnexbox is my new favorite though.

Because it seems like you are building this port as perfect as possible, what do you think of some of these things

*Implimenting the cool rumble idea you devised earlier, with the option to turn it on/off independant of the code, and a master rumble toggle for each game.

*Expanding the cheat menu into
Game Genie Codes
Pro Action Replay Codes
Search
View Search Results (Press A to Add to Codes)
Browse Codes

*Implimenting the zsnes 'search' tool fully, broken into selection stages like so
-------------
What Size Search? **Try smaller first**
1 Byte  0..255
2 Bytes 0..65535
3 Bytes 0..16777215
4 Bytes 0..4292967295
-------------
How do you believe your value is stored?
-Dec (Represented through the dec value of the hex) **Best Bet**
-Hex (represented directly in the hex) **Less Common**
-------------
What type of Search?
-Exact Value
-Comparison
-------------
You chose Exact Value:
Enter the current value {.....} of the element you'd like to cheat/change
Ex: If you want to cheat bullets and you have 45 bullets, type 45.
Return to game, change the value somehow, (get hit, fire off your gun, gain exp) enter the new value, to narrow the search. Narrow it down to 1 or 2, then test your code. Make your own codes!
-------------
You chose Comparison:
All values in the game are being tracked. Return to the game. Find something you want to cheat/change but don't know the exact value, (Health Bar, Type of Ammo, etc) and let it increase, decrease or change. Return to the search menu and tell wether it increased, decreased, changed or stayed the same. Narrow the search results this way until you find your code. Explosions! Enjoy!
-------------
Thus allowing tinkerers to use the full zsnes search tool, which is the best of its kind on any emu.

*Could pull up a virtual numpad for big numbers / exact value searches

*Is there an option to disable custom soundtracks?

*Option to disable "take screenshot" to avoid overwriting box art

Really those are all that I can think of that would make it better than it already is. The new layout looks great.

Hi Nes6502..

Great work, looks great, sounds great....

One little thing I've noticed (and it's a bit annoying), once you save a screenshot part of it sits at the top left of the screen until you exit the game and reload it or another game. I'm using the default display mode and don't have the ability to swap to the nice modes due to it being an old Phillips monitor 8833 (superb in their day)

Thanks for the hard work you have done so far, please keep it up :-)

Btw, a full cheat maker would be nice :-)

Open my eyes and ears?

You don't think I'm aware of all the errors you posted? Do you think I'm not fixing them on purpose?

I try to add features that people request if they are reasonable and possible. Other than TG3000, none of the issues are my fault. Nearly all your requests are impossible for me to fix. Please use xSnes9x.

Please stop hammering my threads with the same posts over and over and over. Once is enough.

ahhh! This is a very kick ass release! I especially like the selection of sound choices you've added. I remember trying your first 2 release, and doing mario's spin jump to crush turtles, the sfx sounded to me a bit muffled. I just tried your 1.6 release, and now it sounds awesome! There are still some sound issues with certain games, *particulary Contra III* The weapon noises are painful to listen to, actually, any type of sfx in that game is painful. If it's something that can be possibly fixed, may I suggest to take a listen to the game running in Xsnes9x?

So far, I only have 1 request, which I believe is possible to implement. When you exit a game, you start off in the menu at whatever game you picked, I love that. The only thing is, when you want to get out of that particular folder, you have to scroll all the way back up *this is time consuming for us complete romset users* Is there a way to have an *xport emu style* of pushing a button, that takes you directly to the beginning of whatever folder your in? It would be greatly appreciated if this could be another added feature!

Thank you for your wonderful work! You've just taken away more free time that I had, due to this emulator! Thank You :-)

I agree!
A "top directory/back one directory" could be great!
When I am inside the big S letter directory... right there on the bottom, I
need to manually scroll all waaaay up to be able to switch to other letter folder.

It's not a important feature, but it could be a neat one if implemented!
(c:

And I am still waiting for the 1.5 or 1.6 version...
My 'usual pleaces' do not have them yet!

Regards,
Cospefogo.

Trust me, the Contra III sounds are much more accurate and nearly (if not) perfect in ZsnexBox as compared to a real SNES.

Snes9x is not a good tool to measure SNES sound accuracy. ZSNES is better and BSNES is the best. Compare how Contra 3 sounds in BSNES and xSnes9x if you don't have an SNES and Contra 3.

The last accessed ROM directory is not a feature of this release.

The in game SNES audio is not saved intentionally. I realise that most users of this port are advanced, but I have to keep the non-advanced user in mind. I don't want someone to accidentally lower the vollume to 0 and it be saved forever. I don't care if this happens for the GUI, but I do for the in game emulation.

Is it possible to code using that emu's sound system, than zsnes's then?

Great job on this, you're almost there to perfection!  I really really wanna see your rumble setup implemented with this.  I've made quite a few rumble setups for NES when Xport implemented it, and I'm impatiently waiting for another port to contain it.  It is easily one of the coolest ways to add  "new" features to a classic game.  Besides, I know we all want to play some Mario Kart with rumble  biggrin.gif

Well, maybe it's just me, but the Contra 3 spread gun in ZSNES sounds much better than Snes9x. Oh well.

-Added 3 key combinations. They are:

L Trigger + Back = Save State
R Trigger + Back = Load State
Back + Start = Exit Emulation

Thats pretty neat, nice job =), I dont intend to sound needy, but the key combinations from Xport`s emus
R Trigger + Black = Save State
R Trigger + White = Load State

isnt that more user friendly?

when saving a state: L Trigger + Back = Save State , in Zelda it gets that "save game, continue" in game menu...

If you used a key combination that dont interfere with IGM, that would be AWESOME  biggrin.gif
just a thought.

What am I doing wrong?
I've used 1.0 and 1.4... but I can't for the life of me seem to get 1.5 or 1.6 to work

it'll start up, I can go through the menu's and stuff, I hear the lovely castlevania tune chosen for the background music, I can go through the menu's and stuff, if I configure the rom path via the .INI file and point it to any other directory other than the default directory it locks up when I try to start a rom...

It locks up when you try to start a ROM or when you load the emulator? Maybe try patching default.xbe to make it retail. Try deleting the ZsnexBox.ini before starting it.

well... when it's at "factory settings" when it's looking in the "D:\roms" I can navigate to the folder that my roms are stored with the rom browser... but when I change the RomPath.INI to the directory where my roms are located, it'll show them when the emu starts, then when I try to start any rom it just freezes the screen causing me to have to manually reboot my Xbox

What is the contents of the RomPath.ini after you change it?

I just tested it.

My games were in E:\Games\Emulation\ZsnexBox 1.5\Roms
and my Rompath.ini was D:\Roms

I created this folder: F:\a

I put games in this new folder and changed the RomPath.ini to say F:\a

I started the emulator, it showed all the games I put there.

I started a game and it played fine.

You might want to try patching the default.xbe

Pay attention to what the archive is: i.e. ZsnexBox 1.7.zip
Do not pay attention to what it says on the RomBrowser. I seem to have a bad habit of releasing without changing this.

Lol 1.7 smile.gif

I forgot to say before that i had a problem with the emu the first time i ran 1.6 version i didnt set the correct roms folder and the emulator pointed to the emulator folder. I loaded the .txt file and the console crashed. It would be interesting to have an option to disable showing files that doesn't have valid rom extensions in the browser and let only show zip .smc .fig.... etc.

In the other hand i think that the version of the emulator should be shown by the emulator itself not in the skin, so the same skin could be reused for different versions.

Btw, do you think it would be possible to add a spc player like xsnes9x?

Thanks a lot smile.gif
