OK, MS25 flashed with 4.0, 1.0 5.1, 5.2 all do the same strange thing..

If powered down, the first disk will load ok, but will freeze shortly after playing 1-5 minutes, then any disk after will get the cannot read error.
I tried 4 new lasers so far, all do the exact same, tweaked 2 of them but no go..  truelt insane now!

Origs work OK still!

media:
Ritek
Verbatum
Max

Flash: 1, 4.0, 5.1, 5.2
thanks!

remove hard drive and see if it works.  if it does read ok afer that you will need to backup your saves and reformat the drive.  this happened to me.

Ok, sillyness goes on,,

Games boot if powered off then on, then inserted, but will lock up, Lost Planet backup will lock up crossing the bridge on the beginning of the game in the exact spot each time..  Orig work ok though!

Using verbatum dvd+r dl's at 2.4x
also used riteks in the past now they are hit and miss as well.

went back to my 1.0 (orig extreme) flash and have the same results. just frustrating!

I almost feel there may be more of an issue with the 360 than the drive as the power on off thing is VERY odd to me.

4 new lasers tried, pot tweak tried, multiple firmwares tries, multiple DVD burners / media / speeds

as its summer ill play with this thing once a week or so to see whats up but it is just plain annoying at this point!

I'm running into a very similar problem.  I bought a Samsung MS25 on ebay to replace a Hitachi.  The console is old enough that the drive isn't married to the motherboard (so no need to spoof).  I flashed the Samsung with the iXtreme 1.2 firmware (with my drive number added into the firmware...but no spoofing).  When I loaded Halo 2, it worked fine (original disc).  I then tried both original and backup 360 games...neither seemed to work.  After a while I realized that both backup and original 360 games sometimes loaded...maybe 1/4 of the time.  Xbox1 games always loaded.  The 360 games would have stuttering video and when they did load, they would only run for so many minutes before they'd have dirty disc errors.  My hitachi works great, so I thought I'd take the working hitachi laser and put it into the Samsung.  Surprisingly this didn't work any better.  The Samsung still read discs unreliably.  I then put the hitachi laser back in the hitachi and the hitachi worked perfectly.  I'm at a loss since the hitachi works fine, but the MS25 I bought doesn't seem to be able to read discs reliably no matter what I do (I also tried changing the Pot of the laser...but that didn't help).  If anyone has some ideas, please let me know.

i seem to have gotten the issuw when i updated from version 1 (ms25 core) to version 5.2a(ms28 core)

is it possible the core update on the ms25 caused some long term issues?  my xbox is old as well not married.

That's a definite theory.  Unfortunately I'm not really technical enough in this realm to give a worthwhile opinion.  Anyone else?

From my [Limited] knowledge this has more to do with the backup than the console / drive / FW. If you CBF make another backup of the disk and test if that part of the game is working correctly.

yes there is a method you can try that worked flawlessly with a sammy from a friend of mine.

its called the rubber band method.

its really quite low tech but it seems to work. you can google it or search for it in the usual places, but ill try to explain how to do it:

open your x360 and open your drive.

there is a metal bar were the laser unit slides up and down.(if you opened one you know what i mean)

on that bar you put a rubber band at the inner end.(just wrap it around a couple of times and tie it with a knot and cut the excess)

this will act like a "bumper" for the laser and it will prevent it to go all the way down the bar. the laser unit will not be able to go to full docking position.

Like this if you will

before:      inner part  )) laser

after:        inner part  ).) laser         (the dot is the rubber band)

as i said before this worked like a charm with a friend of mine(did it myself quite easy). no more read issues. I think what it does is it prevents the laser to read parts of a burned disk that dont have information as opposed to an original that has information all the way into the inner circle.

by the way this does not affect originals in any way they boot like before.

hope this helps, and if you have doubts as i said before just look for it and you will find more info im sure.

maybe your burner is taking a shit. if you cant get it working i need some sammy drive parts lmk

@altoids
yes you need to spoof, no matter how old it is. yes the drive is married to the board (well the key at least and drive type).

Ok, I am looking at my options of buying a new DVD drive or buying a new 360 core,  If i replcae the drive should i get a hitachi, a MS 25 or 28?  Im a tad afraid to buy a new core as it seems the hitachi's may not be a simple flash like the sammys are.  Any help is welcome on this one before i buy anything.

Thanks

I had the same issue. Disc unreadable only with backups.. original works great. I also have a ms25. Is your drive making weird noise?? I tried 1.2 and 1.2b with no luck.
What I did was the rubberband mod.  No issues now. Original works good, backups too.
Give it a try.

ill jam in a bubber band and see what happens,..  my issue is not unreadable, it is they will play for a short time and freeze pretty much, and they only boot when the box is turned on, ie if i play a game, eject i and put in another then it wont read it, but if i power it off, power it back on, then insert a disk it works for a short time..

could be my box i guess as well..

tried with and without the hdd attached same results.

plays DVD's perfectly though lol

I had the same sort of problem,

Everything would boot fine, then after 5 or so mins it started playing up and couldnt read well, then would die, you wouldnt be able to read anything after, yet if you left it for a hour and tried it again it would work.

Replacing the laser didnt work, your going to have to replace the drive entirely, which is what i did and worked fine, if you get another samsung all you would have to do is replace the pcb board from the old drive with the new one, it wont take 5mins.
