Title: How To Replace A Hitachi Drive
Post by: adamscybot on March 07, 2007, 09:44:00 AM
Right I have to buy a new motherboard to fix my 3 red lights of death issue so I need some help on how to insert the key that comes with it.

The key is that of an Hitachi 78Fk and my drive is a Hitachi 47DH. I assum that the difference in rom versions makes no difference?

I have looked at tutorials on here but most are based on extracting it from one drive and putting it into another and not what to do with a key that come son the disc. I am yet to know what format the key comes in -  a .bin file or the actual key itself in a notepad document or something. I would like to know how it would be done either way?

My current drive is already hacked with GaryOPA's latest flash - so I guess I should restore my drive.

If so, how do I go about putting the key im given into the hacked firmware ready to flash back on the drive?

Or can I inject the key straight onto the hacked firmware without restoring?

Adam

I am assuming here that your new MB was associated to a v78 and that your drive is a v47 (just in case I swapped it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) )

There might be a better way to do this, you will need one of the guys doing a lot of flashing to confirm.

You can look at Hitachi Key Insertion Tutorial or look at the following

-Restore your hitachi first
-Get the FW 2.3S, extract the FW you need like 47_23s.bin from FWPACK.RAR (if your hitachi is a 47 and you want a 2.3s installed on it) and rename to hitachi.bin
-Open your v78 fw/key file with FW toolbox 3.0 and get the key (ctrl-c)
-Open the hitachi.bin and 1) put the key in (ctrl-v) and hit Replace,  2) Spoof as V78
(You can open it with a hex editor to be sure the key is at position 4F00)
-Flash using FWtoolbox (tool/Direct drive flash)

all that to be confirmed, just some ideas,

Many thanks. Your assumption is right  smile.gif

If someone could confirm the above instructions it would be great.

Do I need to spoof the drive? As far as I know, I don't, because its the key that is part of the pair and Im unaware as to if information on the original rom version is kept on the motherboard.

you need to spoof such that your MB still sees the same Drive version, so you need to spoof it to v78.

Really? I really never thought the motherboard matches the dirve version. I always thought it was just th ekey (and the model - toshiba-smasung or hitachi) but not rom version. I will spoof anyway - dont do no harm.

I found a bit more info for you (was looking at the wrong place  sad.gif ).
Two posts in the  FW toolbox 3.0 thread.
1) The first by textbook describes the various step to flashing the v78. I guess after you entered the key and spoofed the firmware, it would continue from step 12 in order to encrypt and flash for a v47.
2) Second is from Garyopa where he says that you must leave a game disk in if using the internal flasher of FW toolbox ???

A different approach to consider could be to first flash your v47 drive with latest FW (which I believe you say is already done), then you could just use the Flash Keys & String data (Spoof) to adapt the drive to the new MB. it might be simpler since the fw would already by in.??

IPB Image

As you may be aware the V78 may have his key in a different location than previous hitachi v47, so you need to be careful.
I know I may bring you more questions than clear direction, Hope someone that has done this in the past will be able to confirm the best approach. still, hope it helps.

By the way I am in the same boat = 3 red lights, I have to replace my MB grr.gif . The new one was on a samsung so it will be a different task.

Could you plese elaborate on this?

What firmware did you modify? What were oyur exact steps?

sosotiit, many thanks for oyur help! Im in a much better order than I was in before.

I will list what steps I tihnk I should take to make all this as easy as possible:

1. First dump the current hacked firmware from my hitachi drive.
2. Get the key and copy and paste it into the box and click replace key.
3. Go to Tools --> Spoof firmware.
4. Click the 78FK option and make sure the 'master checksum' part is checked.
5. Click apply spoof.
6. Generate encrypted file <---- Is this necessary? I guess it creates a backup of your new firmware.
7. Flash keys.
8. Flash string ID.

The main thing im struggling to decide on is if I should restore first. Obviously if I do the process is completely different.

What should I do?

The encrypt is more than a backup, if you open it with and hex editor, you will see that all data has been modified (not sure of the transfer function to be honest).
I know it is needed if you take the approach of restoring and reflashing the entire firmware as we were originally discussing. My concern for you then is  since the FW is spoofed as v78, that the flash does not happen as required for a hitachi v47.

Now going with the approach of only inserting the new key and spoof data over an already flashed Drive, not sure either if encrytion is needed. I would be tempted to always work from a file that is encrypted for flashing to a Hitachi, but never tried this one  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) .

Im not sure what you meant by:

QUOTE

I assume you mean that the toolbox will flash it wrong as it sees it as a 78Fk or something along them lines. This is my worry too.

Will my xecuter connectivity kit actually work after sofing the drive as a 78FK cos it doesnt support the &*FK. I use this to put the dirve in modeb....

The insertion tutorial uses flashing via DOS - but likey ou said there might be different positions.

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE CONFIRM ALL OF THIS - whith exact steps?!

Key/Legend
78FK Related = Firmware, Drive, New Motherboard
47DH Related = Firmware, Drive, Old Motherboard

1) Assuming you have already Restored your Drive and have the bin from the New Motherboard and Old Motherboard

2) Get your Drive recognized by windows.
3) Open Up Firmware Toolbox
Open Up Firmware in Firmware Toolbox
(IMG:http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/6282/newmotherboardkeyym5.jpg)

5) Copy The "New Motherboard Key is Here" and paste into Notepad
(IMG:http://img54.imageshack.us/img54/8679/newmotherboardkeynotepaaj6.jpg)

6) Open up Firmware in Firmware Toolbox
(IMG:http://img73.imageshack.us/img73/3631/brokenmotherboardkeynf8.jpg)

7) Go back to notepad and copy the "New Motherboard Key is Here"
(IMG:http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/1235/newmotherboardkeynotepaxh5.jpg)

8) Select "Broken Motherboard Key is Here" and Paste "New Motherboard Key is Here" , Click "Replace"
(IMG:http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/1844/newmotherboardkeyreplacee6.jpg)

9) Flash the Key to the Drive, Tools >> Direct Drive Flash (GDR only) >> Flash Keys
(IMG:http://img57.imageshack.us/img57/6028/newmotherboardkeyreplacwr3.jpg)

10) Now If you want to Flash With GaryOpa'a V2.3 R2, Now is the Time to do it (won't Explain that) Once Finished ,

11) Spoof Firmware, Tools >> Spoof Firmware
(IMG:http://img160.imageshack.us/img160/2084/spooffirmwareci4.jpg)

12) Click, Hitachi GDR3120L ROM 0078 >> Apply Spoof
(IMG:http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/5029/spooffirmware2fy6.jpg)

Should look like this now
(IMG:http://img236.imageshack.us/img236/6330/spoofedyw3.jpg)

13) Flash Spoof Data, Tools >> Direct Drive Flash (GDR Only) >> Flash String ID (Spoof Data)
(IMG:http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/8813/flashspooftg8.jpg)

14) Choose Drive and the flasher, Then Click "Start Flashing"

And your done, Hope this helped  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy.gif)

FANTASTIC. Can not thank you enough. That really has cleaned it up. Many, many thanks.

I see youve put quite a bit of effort there just for me  biggrin.gif . Thank you.

Just 1 question. What flasher should I choose. I assume internal flasher. But is it true, when using the internal flasher, the drive should have an original game in it?

I've always chosen internal flasher + a DVD Movie (Spiderman 2  happy.gif ) And it has always worked tongue.gif, And most Of my posts are mini tutorials  laugh.gif, I always write it from scratch. Want to make a few tutorials soon though.

Wow that is quality material (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) .

so no need to encrypt prior to  the key and flash ID command.

also if you already have it flashed to 2.3s could we do the following?
Key/Legend
78FK Related = Firmware, Drive, New Motherboard
47DH Related = Current v47 Firmware , Drive, Old Motherboard = now.bin of last flash.
Follow the same tutorial without restoring at the start and without the Flash With GaryOpa'a V2.3 R2 in the middle?
So starting with the now.bin instead of original hitachi firmware is the same process, but we remove steps 1 and 10.

For future updates, I am assuming:
Start with  Current Firmware,
Spoof Firmware, Tools >> Spoof Firmware
Click, Hitachi GDR3120L ROM 0047 >> Apply Spoof
Flash Spoof Data, Tools >> Direct Drive Flash (GDR Only) >> Flash String ID (Spoof Data)
Choose Drive and the flasher, Then Click "Start Flashing"
You get your drive back as a V47 flashed drive, do the update as any v47.
reapply the spoof to v78 as per instruction above.

thanks

Edit aug 2007

I adapted the Tut above (post 12) for those who wanted a more specific tut for replacing Samsung By Hitachi
The same picture are associated to each steps:

QUOTE
1) Assuming you have already Restored your Hitachi Drive, a copy of your original Hitachi Firmware ( often called was.bin in flashing directory)  and have the bin/Key from the samsung
2) Get your Drive recognized by windows (slax).
3) Open Up Firmware Toolbox
-Open Up Samsung Firmware in Firmware Toolbox
5) Copy The samsung Key and paste into Notepad
6) Open up the Hitachi Original Firmware in FWToolbox
7) Go back to notepad and copy the Key
8) Select  Key area in Toolbox and Paste the Key  , Click "Replace"
9) Flash the Key to the Drive, Tools >> Direct Drive Flash (GDR only) >> Flash Keys
10) Now If you want to Flash With Hacked FW (iXtreme), now is the Time to do it (won't Explain that) Once Finished,
11) Spoof Firmware, Tools >> Spoof Firmware
12) Click, Samsung XXXX >> Apply Spoof
13) Flash Spoof Data, Tools >> Direct Drive Flash (GDR Only) >> Flash String ID (Spoof Data)
14) Choose Drive and the flasher, Then Click "Start Flashing"

And your done, Hope this helped

AS per comment above, next time you update your firmware, you must first unspoof the firmware.

Yep, only threw that in there because I thought he had already Restored his drive. I personally always Flash the with "hacked firmware" anytime BEFORE I flash the Spoof Data to avoid any confusion the Hacked Firmware Flasher may experience.

Haven't had to update a spoofed drive yet, but I'd assume it would be best to:
-Undo the Spoof: Tools >> Spoof Firmware >> Original Settings (Undo-Spoof) >> Apply Spoof
-Restore the drive
-Proceed with flashing any update.
Then you would spoof the firmware as above.

I only say to do this to try to avoid the flasher possibly confusing the firmware with another version, although I am not sure how the checks work.

Does the toolbox work with USB adaptors? I reliase it cant flash 78FK's with the USB adaptors. But will it work with other rom versions for simple key replacements and spoofing firmware?

Yep, Would work as long as the Drive is detected in windows. But remember you need to have an Original Game or Movie in the drive to flash.

No. You need to contact someone who can use an external programmer to extract the key from the bricked drive.

Either that or buy a new motherboard (which comes with the key - pretty much all done on Ebay) and also buy a new drive to put the key you are given on to. Pricey...

im not 100% sure how to make my old drive work with my new motherboard

i have searched for tutorials but i still dont have many answers

heres what i think i have to do. revert my drive back to the original firmware

inject the new mobo key. then flash the firmware to play backups

please can someone provide some assistance, as i dont want to brick my box

does your v46 already has the firmware version you want to keep on it, or you must change it?
if you already heve the firmware you want see post number 15 above.
if not restore and go to post number 12.

and you obviously have the key that goes with the new MB?

my drive is all ready hacked with  2.3 stelth

so i guess i just write that back. inject the new key. then spoof to v78 then write it back?

yes, just write the key (step 2-9)
and then write the  new id (V78) in your V46 Drive (step 11-14)

it is the tutorial above without step 1 and 10.

Note for future upgrade, it will be important you first unspoof your v46 (return it as v46) before you upgrade the firmware. That is needed because v78 does not have the key in the same location as v46. After the upgrade you will need to respoof it to v78.

2.3 stealth is the latest,

suggest you make a copy of your last hacked FW (now.bin), and call it spoof.
The enter the key , and flash the key.
then the spoof ID in flash the ID.
note it is not the entire firmware that will be reflashed, just those segment.

OK Question.

I used samtool to modify my original hitachi firmware to xtreme53D firmware for samsung.

when i run this firmware through the firmware 3.0 toolbox the key displayed doesn't match and the letters saying hitachi firmware seem to be all corrupted.  Is this normal?

I decided to just do it with the 3.0 toolbox instead of samtool cause of this.

I would stick to fw toolbox, or Hex editing.
Using samtool which is great as part of XBM or if you can do your bat file to call it is ok, like that not sure.

If the drive you use as a replacement is a hitachi use this tutorial here and FWtoolbax
if the replacement  is a samsung then use How To Replace By A Samsung Drive, Also How To Spoof, Flash, and correct E66 Errors .

You guys are simply the best!  Great tutorial.  Just used it to replace a dead motherboard with a hitachi drive with a motherboard that had a sammy MS25 and spoofed the hitachi to MS28. Worked like a charm!

Thanks Lice and soso!

Quick question, how do you get it to be seen in fwtoolbox again?  I loaded the last bin I dumped (if not I can't proceed because it is grayed out) , then the Direct Flash Spoof section is available and when selecting unspoof it ask if I want to keep the existing checksum or replace it (0000).  I am just curious for future purposes.

Thanks again

k, heres the thing i originally spoofed my drive threw hexedit before fwtoolbox had the option to do so, now using the new 360fwtoolbox_31 to unspoof it gave all sorts of errors an also i come to find out that my original bin was corrupted to go figure (now is the time i started to drink) so i got so aggravated I start doin all sorts of #@!% what actually worked was me doing these steps, open up a backup of someone elses bin with the same model an all an followed the steps in the tutorial "UPGRADING A CURRENT HACKED DRIVE" also dont forget to change your drive key to your own after it flashes follow the "TUTORIAL ON HOW TO SPOOF A SAMSUNG DRIVE AS A HITACHI OR AS A SAMSUNG FROM OTHER VERSION" an there you go all done saved me some time in removing the tsop an flashing with an external programmer.

great work lexs and you are right that those that did the spoof manually, should restore it the same way.

After reading alot of posts I just want somebody if they can to confirm my assumptions below before I upgrade my drive.

I have a an Hitachi GDR-3120L V0047 drive left over from my first 360 that got the dreaded 3 red lights. After  several attempts to get it working again ending in failure I thought I might use this drive in my other 360 instead of the original v78 so i can use the Commodore4Eva Xtreme Hitachi-LG v2.4 Stealth. (as Maximus removed the stealth for v78)

Here goes (this might help other users!)

get the drive recognised in windows - check

1) Now is it best to restore the drive to the original firmware - Every body says yes!

2) Then upgrade to the Commodore4Eva Xtreme Hitachi-LG v2.4 Stealth - I guess you start the whole     process from scratch again? (do you have to restart the pc before the next step?)

3) Once upgraded open toolbox 3.1, open v78 bin file, copy the key and paste temporarily into notepad.

4) Go back to toolbox, open a copied bin file of the hacked .bin from v0047 drive saved as spoof.bin

5) paste key from 0078 in notepad, then hit the replace key

6) Flash the Key to the Drive

7) Spoof Firmware

8) Click, Hitachi GDR3120L ROM 0078

9) Flash string ID

10) Choose Drive and the flasher, Then Click "Start Flashing

or should steps 3 to 6 be done before step 2?

Cheers

@gilbert123
not sure why it does not want to flash, have you tried with FWtoolbox 3.0, some had a few prob with 3.1.
what chipset are you using?
are you using vista, if so is it 64 bit version?

@ravdav
yes on restore
then do as per the tut, which is 3-6 before 2.
the reason is that after the key is flash in an original bin, you are basically starting fresh and with the good key for the 2.4 flash. so it will leave you with a set up file now/was... that have the good key in it.

Step 1 and 2 are ok
step 3 get now.bin ,copy the key from v78,paste it into v47 now.bin and spoof it as v78.Finally encrypt it.Do never patch a binary file without the encryption.

step 4 put now-e.bin(you can change its name) into X-LG folder and:

47flash e now-e.bin 90004000 1000   this is for the key

and

47flash e now-e.bin 9003d000 1000   hit enter
47flash e now-e.bin 9003e000 1000   hit enter
this is for spoofing  or you can the process with maximus fw toolbox 3.x

as far as I know many people are having problem with sil chipset and fw toolbox!!

you could update the firmware with regular garyopa package, and use the method of myfranco just above.
DO a copy of your now.bin in a directory called SPOOF (never use you master file, it is precious) and you would use ms25 obviously (instead of v78) as a spoof value.

if it is because you do not follow the method at all, suggest you look at the installer forum.

So should it be as below? (For any of these steps with Maximus, I guess I can't use X360 USB connection!)

1) Now is it best to restore the drive to the original firmware - Every body says yes!
Step 9/10 failed on restore but said restore to drive 100 at the end?

2) open toolbox 3.1, open v78 bin file, copy the key and paste temporarily into notepad.

3) Go back to toolbox, open a copied bin file of the hacked .bin from v0047 drive saved as spoof.bin

4) paste key from 0078 in notepad, then hit the replace key with maximus 3.1 tool

5) Flash the Key to the Drive (Do I need a disk in the drive?)

6) Then upgrade to the Commodore4Eva Xtreme Hitachi-LG v2.4 Stealth - I guess you start the whole process from scratch again? (do you have to restart the pc before the next step?)

7) Spoof Firmware

8) Click, Hitachi GDR3120L ROM 0078

9) Flash string ID

10) Choose Drive and the flasher, Then Click "Start Flashing

I am using Maximus 3.1 for this, where does the "Finally encrypt it.Do never patch a binary file without the encryption." happen?

Let me try this again:

1) restore v47 to original - Done (step 9/10 failed for some reason but said 100% done)

2)Flash drive to latest Commodore4Eva Xtreme Hitachi-LG v2.4 Stealth

3) Reboot & get drive in mode b with slax 2 instead of USB360 so I can use Maximus 3.1

4)Open .bin from v78 drive that I want to emulate

5) Copy key

6) Open copy of hacked.bin renamed as spoof.bin from v2.4 stealth flash procedure

7)Paste key from v78 into box in maximus & hit replace key button

8) Now hit generate encrypted file & wait for it to save

9)Spoof Firmware, Tools >> Spoof Firmware

10) Click, Hitachi GDR3120L ROM 0078 >> Apply Spoof

11) Flash Spoof Data, Tools >> Direct Drive Flash (GDR Only) >> Flash String ID (Spoof Data)

12) Choose Drive and the flasher, Then Click "Start Flashing"

And your done hopefully

I needed to get my 59DJ drive working in a motherboard that had a MS25 in it. I went through the guide on post #12 but once I insert an original dvd and hit 'start flashing' The drive has been spinning for 5 minutes with nothing happening now (I guess) so I hit cancel and decide to restart my comp and 360 and try again.

Now, SLAX cd won't put my 59DJ (spoofed MS25) drive into Mode B because it's showing as a toshiba-samsung drive. I don't have the new motherboard yet (I just got the orig.bin file mailed to me) and I'm wondering if I'm ok before I try it in the new board.  Also, how can I unspoof this drive if I cant get it into mode B and recognized in Windows? I have an SiS chipset btw. Will I have to unspoof this drive with a VIA chipset now that its spoofed as an MS25 drive or could I get it into mode B with the wire trick still? Thanks

I getting myself really confused now!

Are you guys saying I should inject the key into the hacked.bin before I do the Commodore4Eva Xtreme Hitachi-LG v2.4 Stealth upgrade so the key from the v78 is already in the .bin See below reply:-

@ravdav
yes on restore
then do as per the tut, which is 3-6 before 2.

How is this possible, I don't get the hacked.bin until I do the v2.4 stealth update!, I have the orig.bin from before when I upgraded it to v.23 stealth!

Cheers for any help in advance

Hi, I read the tons of tutorials but got a little confused relating it to my specific situation.

I'd like to put a Hitachi 78fk into a motherboard associated to a ms25.  I don't want to play backups, I'd like my 78fk to ONLY spoof as a ms25.

I have my orig.bin from my MS25, and I can get the 78fk into modeb and seen in windows.
Can someone help me?

I solved my own problem.
I used the toolbox and changed to the samsung key and applied the ms25 spoof to the original 78fk fw.

thanks

I don't want to fuck this up so i'm sorry if this is  a bit of a newbie post, but I need some reassurance...
I just recieved a new oem Hitachi 047dj. To replace my broken 0078fk.

Obviosly I wanna spoof it and make it play back ups.  Is my understanding of how to do this right?

Guide

I will follow the guide above. So all I need from my old drive is the key.... I simply follow the guide. Also on step 12, do I choose the new drive I'm putting in or the one that was originaly in the Xbox?

Then once thats done, I can follow tutorial by textbook on flashing with Maximus as normal? Dump firmware, hack firmware. apply firmware?
Title: How To Replace A Hitachi Drive
Post by: sosotiit on May 29, 2007, 05:17:00 AM
no on step 12 you choose the old drive (v78) in the list such that you new drive (v47) is given the ID MODEL of the old one.

as for flashing, you should do it in step 10 as indicated in the tutorial!!! the key of the v78 and v47 are not the same place so you need to do it before you change the ID model. You can also use garyope 2.4 if you want since it is a v47.
good luck

Damn Firmware toolbox gives me "cannot read from drive" when I go to dump the raw firmware. Any suggestions? It also shows the DVD drive as ROM 0059 even though on the case it says 0047dj.

Should I try flashing it with GaryOpa first. then restoring it, then use the firmware extracted by GaryOpa? Or anything else?

Right I needed to do the classic dump firmware.. gonna try this again.

I flashed the new47D drive with C4EVA_XTRM-HITACHI_v2_4_Stealth using a connectivity kit.
Started FWToolBox 3.1B and dumped the FW.
Replaced the key.
But as soon as I try to flash the keys (Tools > Direct Drive Flash (GDR Only) > Flash Keys), I get an error: Error Running Flasher: 1".
Does anyone know what commands I need to run if I want to do this (flash keys) using 47flash?

1) I flashed the new 47D drive with C4EVA_XTRM-HITACHI_v2_4_Stealth using a connectivity kit.
2) Started FWToolBox 3.1B and dumped the FW.

5) Encrypted the FW: firmcrypt e now.bin now-e.bin

Then I used the instructions of myfranco (thnx!!).

6) 47flash e now-e.bin 90004000 1000
7) 47flash e now-e.bin 9003d000 1000
8) 47flash e now-e.bin 9003e000 1000

The 360 now boots originals but no backups.
How would I have to flash the drive again? Because it's recognized as a TS-H943A. So I can't use FWToolbox.
Would I have to use 47flash again?

your laser is dieing or there isn't a SS on your backed up games, make sure there is a SS on your games (use xbc) then try using verbs, if it still doesnt work then your probably gonna have to replace your laser.

i believe the newer firmwares 2.4 and the ix's have spoof dentition so it should flash fine if you use one of the cmd line flashers, it wont ever say its done because of the spoofed sector so when it tells you to press any key to try again it will be flashed.

if you try flashing any part of the samsung fw to a Hitachi drive you will kill it.

i personally don't/wouldn't use fwtoolbox to flash a drive other then a 78, try using the cmd line flasher, if you still get this problem then unspoof and then flash hacked and respoof

I don't know the commands (sectors) to use with 47flash.
It's a SIL chipset with WinXp. I also don't want to turn off or restart the PC. Because this is the 2nd drive i've tried. And after the error I reset the PC. Then I couldn't get the drive in ModeB sad.gif
Don't want to brick this one.

Key:
90004000 1000

FWtoolbox spoof:
9003d000
9003e000

the line to flash would be
47flash <drive letter> <fw location\fwname.bin> <sector> 1000

so if the drive letter is h, the location is c:\ , the name is 47 and i want to flash the key the line to type would be
47flash h c:\47.bin 90004000 1000

Good evening gentlemen....

Im in a little bit of a pickle..
I needed to swap a bricked Samsung ms28 from a xbox i bought  of a friend, he had extracted the key before, but hey had bricked the drive... so i had a spare hit047dj kicking around.... so ok , i said, i need to spoof this drive.

So i open toolbox. put the orig 47 firmware on which comes with toolbox, then go through the process of spoofing the drive, now i have a feeling along the spoofing route it doesnt flash all of the firmware and only 2 sectors HENCE....  the key not being replaced....,

So at this  point i hadnt realised this, thought i would test it thinking it should work, and i got the multi language  message from xbox, saying "to play this disc put it into a xbox 360 console" so i thought,, it hadnt put the key in, so ithought i would restore back to original and loaded fwtoolbox, and it couldnt detect any drives... altho xp has picked up the drive and assigned a letter...

any help - suggestions - guidance would be greatfully appreciated...

many thanks

if I understand your question properly answering no as every drive has key set to that motherboard only. so you cant just swap dvdroms.

Ok, I have a Hitachi 0079FL. I would like to replace this drive with one which can be software flashed. From what I understand I can read from my 0079FL but not write to it without a maximus passkey installed. I dont want to solder my 0079FL because I suck at soldering and dont want to risk bricking my drive. I am looking to buy a replacement drive off of ebay and have a few questions.
1. Which drive is best for software based modding?
2. will I be able to extract my original drive key without soldering my 0079FL?
3. After extracting my drives key, what tools to I need to use?

I know that some of these questions have been asked before, but I haven't been able to find anything detailed about the 0079FL drive replacement.

Thanks,

i seem to be having the same issue, i even flash in dos however it wont flash the old key into the new drive.  always seems to hang or freeze my comp.  I have had successful flashes on other drives as well so I know my chipset is fine.

I have used toolbox version 4. manual flash with 59flash drive letter etc...

I can update the firmware and even spoof it, i just cant seem to patch that key from the old drive, soon as I hit flash keys it freezez or it cant communicate with drive.

when i manually flash in dos it takes 7 - 10 min then it says its done, however when i memdump to check it still has the original key to that drive.

I am swapping out a dead 46dh drive to a new 59dj drive.

TIA

From what I understand I can read from my 0079FL but not write to it without a maximus passkey installed. I dont want to solder my 0079FL because I suck at soldering and dont want to risk bricking my drive. I am looking to buy a replacement drive off of ebay and have a few questions.
1. Which drive is best for software based modding?
2. will I be able to extract my original drive key without soldering my 0079FL?
3. After extracting my drives key, what tools to I need to use?

I know that some of these questions have been asked before, but I haven't been able to find anything detailed about the 0079FL drive replacement.

Thanks,
Unfortunately, you are going to have to either solder something on your 79FL (passkey, Infectus, Maximus key) to get your DVD key or send it to someone to extract it for you.

Once you have the key, you can easily software flash either the BenQ VAD6038 or Samsung TS-H943. I'm sure the other Samsung models are as easy, but I have only personally had experience with the TS-H943.

The BenQ drives are quieter, but require an nVidia motherboard SATA chipset or external SATA card with a VIA 6421 chipset (this seems to be the favourable chipset) to flash. I believe the SATA chipset compatibility is much higher for flashing Samsung drives (research). There seem to be quite a few Samsung drives on eBay for around $50. That would probably be your best bet.

I've flashed both BenQ and Samsung with the VIA chipset SATA card with no problems. I use a 256MB USB key that is bootable to a Win98 DOS. On the drive, I have the latest DOSFLASH, FIRMTOOL, original firmware files, and current hacked firmwares.

I use FIRMTOOL to transfer the keys to the hacked firmware (or I use Firmware toolbox to create the hacked firmware before booting into DOS), then DOSFLASH to flash. Done!

Hope that helps

So I have a quick question. I spoofed my v79 key into a v78 drive successfully without using iXtreme fw (because of the bans and whatnot). In the future (lets say I get banned because MS can tell if I swapped or I just end up not caring about XBL anymore) how would I go about flashing my spoofed (yet unhacked) v78? Just unspoof, flash with FWToolbox and respoof?

my hitachi 47dj is dead, and i ve bought Samsung Ms28...

The salesman said that it is brand new. I  plugged it to Xbox360 but , Samsung drive's tray does not open...

Green Light Flashes and is says opening, closing but , the drive does not respond.

When i plug the sata cable to pc, i can see the Samsung drive on bios....

Is this something wrong with samsung? Or if i spoof the drive everything will be ok???

I think , even if i dont spoof the drive, when i plug the power cable, and sata cable to Xbox, it must play audio discs and anything, tray must open, but i should not play games...

Sorry if my english is bad, i ve tried to tell you as much as i could...

I think I got the hang of spoofing an Hitachi as another Hitachi, the problem is I got 2 possible keys for my drive so I have to try them both. The first time wont be a problem, but for the second time I'll have to restore the drive. How do I exactly restore a spoofed Hitachi with FW Toolbox? Should I load in the original file without the key changed or the firmware spoofed and to a "Differential Patch (RESTORE)"? Or should I take the file where the key already has been replaced?

Thanks.

ok ive been readin fourms and guides for the past few days now and i am at tha halfway point of what it is im tryna do and its giving me a headache.  I have a 360 with a hitachi 78fk and im tryna replace it with an samsung ms25 drive.  I read tha guide ta transfer my 78fk key to the Xtremev5.3 firmware.  I used samtool and everything copied over just fine.  I checked the xtreme5.3 samsung ms25 fimrware file with firmware tool box and it is recognized as a hitachi 78fk now.  Im completely ok there but my question is wha do i do next?  Ive tried loadin the xtreme 5.3 file with xtremebootmaker and iprep.  it gives me an error in xtreme bootmaker but still allows me to make a folder and all. iprep wont let me load it at all.  Does anyone have any advice or what to possibly do next?  Can i jus ignore the error in xtremebootmaker and use samhack xxxxxxx xxxxx in dos? or is there something im missing here? any help would be appreciated thanks.

Hi. I have a question about spoofing the firmware of my Hitachi drives. My current Xbox 360 originally had an Hitachi "V59DJ" drive. I flashed the drive after I bought it used on ebay a few months ago. It flashed successfully, but the drive has not worked very well since I bought it. I would have to eject a game several times and reload it before it would load a disc. Now, it gives me a "Dirty Disc" error every time I try to play a game. I have a "V78FK" Hitachi drive from my old Xbox 360. I would like to use my old(V78) drive on my new Xbox. I found a tutorial on how to obtain the key from V78 drives without soldering so I now have the keys for both of my drives. I checked this forum to see if I could find a tutorial on spoofing a V78 to make the Xbox detect it as a V59 but I could not find one. Could someone tell me if this is possible and if so, could someone tell me where I could get information on how to do this without soldering?

Thanks

First off, I have to say that this method works great.  I have however run into a situation that has not been covered here pertaining to this method.

I have a 047 (bad drive) but the motherboard is good.

I also have a spare 079 Hitachi.  I have no problem extracting the key and flashing 079s, but can I use this method, or a variation of it?

Any updates or revisions of this tutorial would be greatly appreciated, since it was made before the easy 79Unlock CD method to extract the key and flash 079s.

Thank You.
