Title: 59dj Problem Playing Backups
Post by: selyb on March 04, 2007, 05:57:00 AM
flashed using Xtreme Hitachi 2.3 rev2 using the flash23s.bat and it said all was well
shut down my system, reconnected the sata cable, started it back up, inserted a backup created with my sammy ms28 and after about 60 seconds of spinning it showed 'Open Tray'
then i restarted the 360 with the game still in it and when it got to the dash, it said 'Disc not playable'

i tried two different backups, both created using my sammy ms28 with Xtreme 4.2 and both play flawlessly on that same system and on two other ms28's i tested so it is obviously not the backup
one backup was on Verbatim, the other was on Sony (cant remember media code)

should i use the flash16s.bat to be able to play the bacukps?

edit:
i also tried a couple tricks i found here on the forums like injecting the hdd while at the dash and flicking the hdtv switch but neither worked for me

Does it play originals fine?
Does it play movies fine?
Do you have a backup movie on the same media as your game?

I doubt that 2.3 vs 1.6 will make much difference.

I dont have any movie backups on DL but two different ones on SL work fine
original Xbox1 and Xbox360 games play flawlessly

SL Xbox1 and Xbox360 backups show the DVD Files saying 'put this disc in an xbox' and Dash shows 'Play DVD'

DL Xbox360 backups have two behaviours
if system is on and i inject the game, it shows 'Reading' for like 60 seconds and then shows 'Open Tray'
if i boot the system with the game already in the drive, it shows 'Unplayable Disc'

since these backups play fine on another X360 they are good. If the x360 play original and movies fine, then the flash is good.
I can only see that you 59dj is not the most performant; could think of trying the rubber band mod, or pot calibration. Then if it does not work, it would be laser replacement.

You may want to get more opinion in the   Hacking/Technical DVD-ROM , as far as backup, it seems OK.

thx

btw, after booting xp with drive in B mode, Xbox Backup Creator gives me the message
CODE
Found ODD: HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR3120L 0059 at
   Additional Info: 0BMAB   06/01/24
GDR-3120L Firmware is possibly a stealth version
   or not a garyOPA/Maximus derivative
Features set to basic functionality and may not be accurate

when i hit the 'save layout' button, it said it could not unlock the game partition

also, if it means anything, this is a June 06 drive

in the flash23s.bat, under each test section, there is a line like this
CODE
copy mods.bin X23S-%2\47_23S.bin /v /y > nul

this drive im trying to flash is not detected as a 59b, it is detected as 59 and under that test section there is this line
CODE
copy mods.bin X23S-%2\59_23.bin /v /y > nul
which overwrites the 59_23.bin file instead of creating a 59_23S.bin like the other sections do

the flash16s.bat has the same peculiarity

is this intentional? will i brick the drive if i add the s to that filename and flash it?

ok, i tried the rubber band trick and it just clicks really loud b/c the laser cant get all the way to the center
i suppose the rubberband was too big... i've no idea where to get a rubber band smaller than that... i should have taken a pic and posted :-/

anyway, i figured out that missing S in my post above is a typo in the bat file and will have no ill effects on the flash
that is where the script is making backup files and, afaict, they are never used :-/

when i get home today, i'll try flashing with 2.2 or earlier

Try a game burned on Verbatim at 4x and watch your problem melt away. I hope that is. Every game i burned at 2.4x wouldn't read on a 0059DJ drive. 4x fixed it.

the verbatim backups were burned at 8x
the sony's and memorex at 2.4
im burning using a benq 1655 with BCHB rpc1 not speedpatched and some of them were burned in a benq 1620

i have another question too, from what ive read around here, when i get the open tray error, im supposed to hit the eject button and it is supposed to load? that's what i understood anyway

so when i hit the eject button, it actually ejects and when i put it back in, it still gives me the open tray message

i just tried using the alternative to the rubber band method (i cut up some packing tape into little squares and put them on top of each other until i had about 1mm tall (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)
anyway, now i turned on the system with a game in it and got the open tray message instead of unlplayable disc 0_o

Your Best bet is USE a Pioneer 111d Burner/verb combo seems you got a bitchy drive but trust me Pioneer 111d will make the difference and also try burning with img burn or XBox Backup creator

i have a 59DJ with 2.3 rev2 firmware and in combination with a Pioneer 111D it reads every DL backup I put in. It only reads DL backups AFAIK, movie backups on SL-media work fine though. Only tried TDK/Philips (both RICOH...).
The only two things that botters me is that the hacked firmware supports only drives till 59B and that I can hear the drive read the discs a bit louder then originals. I cant really describe the sound: its not clicking but something else  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) .

Just keep flashing... sometimes you have to run the restore 10 times till the procedure works perfectly. Same goes for the modified firmware flash.

I'm sure those errors still occur, but the program doesn't display them. Might take 10 modified firmware flashes, but it'll eventually work. I've had one take me an hour to flash once because of this.

Make sure you run restore after flash attempts, and be sure to put in an xbox 1 game as well as a 360 game to ensure that both work. I've had one work and not the other before. And the most important lesson this teaches is that flashing the 59dj is probably detectable on LIVE. Even if you do get it to work perfectly, there's no guarantee that the flash worked 100%.

I suggest saving your bin files and making comparisons If LIVE is important to you.
