having a bit of a problem with flashing this dam drive, ive read all the tuts on doing it and dont want to mess with the vvc or whatever it was. i have modded both ms25 and 47d's in the past
i have a edited mtkflash file for my pc, but everytime i go into flash the drive i get the master slave thingy but when u turn the xbox on it doesnt start flashing like it shows in the tut. it just sits there and i get the should be 70 error.
can some1 tell me what i might be doing wrong? ive been tryin for hours to get this.
thanks
-
o and by the way it keeps tellin me 51 should be 70. everything i read says should be 80.
still lost here

Did you use the 0800 Disc?

Did you use the 0800 Disc?
It sounds like he's flashing it for the first time, so the 0800 disc doesn't apply yet.
What timing are you using ? Does the SATA line with the DVD drive appear in the MTKFLASH list before you power down the 360 ? Do you choose the correct choice, then wait 10 seconds and then turn on the 360 ? Is your SATA cable OK ? Silly as it sounds, I had been using a bad SATA cable and was confused as to why mine was hanging. After switching the cable, it worked on the first shot.
-
what chipset are you using to flash ur m28?
i sucessfully flashed my m28 with via vt6421 chipset
I think u need that chipset to flash m28. I went to tigerdirect to get the sata card, ppa inl.
i got 70 instead of 80 as well, but i am still able to flash my sammy.
-
im gettin closer but still same results. i have a built in chipset with my dell e510. i have mtkflash working with my ms25 drive. my coards are all good. i can see the drive in my bios when i have the xbox on before i start my pc. ive disables my ide drives and no success.
i start up my pc and go to dos mode, start up my xbox and put in samread 1234567 12345, see my chipset in slot 3 and shut 360 off. hit 3 and wait for a few seconds and turn the 360 back on, and get 00/70, if i dont turn the 360 off i get 51/70
-
did u try the 10 seconds trick?
-
did exactly what the 10 second trick said to do and got 00/70 because when i selected the chipset of mine my xbox was off, anfd when i turn it back on 10 seconds later nothing happens
-
in samread, when it askes for the serial number are you suppose to put in 1234567 12345 or are u suppose to put in the number on the back of your xbox? xxxxxxx xxxxx
and also in samread and samhack are you suppose to put in your serial insted of the on thats already in there?
might help toards my problem cause i changed the numbers to the serial on the back of my console but still nothing, going to try some other method besides the 10 second trick
-
It doesn't matter, if you for example write SAMREAD 1234567 12345 you are going to get a folder in the folder backups called 1234567 and in that folder you will get a folder called 12345. But it's smart to use the serialnumber on your 360 if you are going to flash more drives so you mix up the different orig.bin for the different 360s.
-
thanks for clearin that up for me. do i absolutley have to add /sata to both files?
-
I'm having an extremely similar error.
Using:
MS-28 (original firmware)
VIA 6241A
Bootdisk maker's edited MTKFlash and downloaded MTKVia
trying to load Xtreme 5.1D
ASUS P5B-Dlx Mobo with C2D
On every attempt I am getting MTK to find the Via primary drive.
If the Xbox is on before the PC the via bios screen hangs on detecting drive, then eventually fails that. Proceeds to boot.
I can load MTK just fine, If I hit escape I am getting 51 should be 70. (Need 80)
If I turn the xbox off, hit the MTK menu item, and then wait 10s, turn box back on the correct SST chip is found then it hangs at "Reading..... 00%". Never any progress.
Have tired with and without /SATA, tried SAMREAD, etc etc, have NO IDEA whats going on here!

From what I understand /sata works for some people and is not required for others. Might as well try both.
-
ive tried with and without /sata, ive tried with the 360 on first and turning it on in dos mode, what firmware version is everyone using? everytime i try to use the 28 as 25 i get an error in the boot maker, so i just pick xtreme51a. and in xtreme boot maker it doesnt find my sata controller so i swap out mtkflash with my edited one for my chipset.
dont know what else to do.
edit: my chipset is showing up as via 8337

Do you have the drivers loaded ? And boot maker still isn't detecting ?
You have flashed other drives with your MTKFlash and chipset ?
-
tried it again, its actually 8237, i have flashed 2 ms25's multiple times and a hitachi 47dj once.
i dont know what boot maker wont list my chipset.
-
So your not getting a reading....00% its just freezing on Port bla bla bla correct ?
Is the xbox light blinking when you power on ?
-
yep i never get to a % just sits there, my green light all work on the xbox
-
I had this on a Via onboard on A7V600 motherboard - Just disabled RAID option and all went OK afterwards
-
don't wait 10 seconds wait 2 or 3 that worked for me I did get the same problem if i waited 10 seconds
and check your mtkflash for my chipset the via vt6421l xtrem bootmaker missed one byte so I had to manually change it
-
my mtk flash is correct, it shows up in # 3 on my list, the fst 2 are ide ports and the last shows up asvia 8237 pri master, u then turn the 360 off and press 3 and wait a few seconds and get the 00 should be 70 error after i press esc
2 files i downloaded said they were the correct mtkflash for the via8237 but neither of them will pull up my via 8237 when i look for it, only thye mtk flash i have been using for my ms25 drives will let it show up.
anyone else use a dell e510 to do this hack?
-
do i need to rename MTKvia to MTK flash and replace it in my boot disc like that? cause thats what i did. or do i need to leave it MTKvia?

I did my MS28 yesterday. I had the same msg: 51 should be 70 but in the end it worked. Try creating the mtkflash with Xtreme boot maker 0.3.6.
The steps I did:
1.Turn on xbox360 and have the drive connect to your sata card - mine is VT6421A.
2.Boot from floppy disk or usb
3.Run "mtkflash r /m orig.bin"
4.Before choose the controller turn off xbox360
5.Choose the correct controller
6.Wait about 10 seconds and then turn on xbox360 and then it should begin to read the firmware.
To write the flash is similar.
-
i tried to make mtkflash with bootmaker but it wont show my via 8237 chipset in the bootmaker. my hdd is sata. and it came in my computer, its internal.
-
Solved my problem.
Jer, this might not help you since your chip is internal. In your case I can only recommend removing all other cards from the pc, and resetting the bios to default.
My problem was that even though I have a Via 6241 card it WILL NOT flash in my PC. PERIOD. My complete pc spec is an Asus P5B-Dlx, C2D E6600, 2GB GSkill HZ DDR2-800, X1900XTX, 2 Hdds in Raid0&1 (but those are unplugged), 650W psu, Pioneer 111-L, pci wifi card, and the via card. It will NOT work.
I took the card down to an older AMD machine (1200Mhz) plugged in the via card, hooked up xbox, had a hell of a time figuring out how to can an older bios like that to detect a usb thumb drive to boot from (Usb dos compatibliy must be on, and boot from usb-fdd) then it worked first time no problems. It was simple to do.
There must be an issue in how certain PCs work with the via card. I think newer is less compatible.
-
sounds like im going to need to find another pc to do the flashing of the ms28 drive. i can flash my ms25 all day long, must be something with the drive and motherboard combo. i dont have another pc with the sata ports. looks like i'll try getting one of those sata cards everyone is using and just try every pc i have .
thanks
-
One other possibility that people (including me) seem to forget...... are you using the external or internal SATA connection on your card?
This poster had the same issue, and had success by using the internal port;
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=574493
-
i have a built in internal sata set on my motherboard. one of them is being used by my hdd and the other is open. should i just try installing an external port in the back of my pc?
-
Sorry - I have not gone through each and every post of this thread.
You did not specify in your original post what card you were flashing with - I had assumed it was the VIA PCI card that is often recommended, in which case there is a SATA port that you can access from outside the case and also some that you can only access from whithin the case. You would need to use the one that can only be accessed from within the case.
If you are using a VIA 6421 SATA onboard motherboard chipset, then this is not relevant, although I would recommend trying to disconnect your hard disk, and plugging your DVD drive in its place
Edit: If you do not have a VIA 6421 chipset (motherboard or PCI), then do yourself a favour and buy one. Dead cheap, and will solve this problem.

i've been trying to research my chipset in my dell e510 and i dont know where i came up with the 8237 chipset. i could swear i had an 8237 chipset, it would show up in dos all the time when i was flashing
but i think i have an intel 945g chipset
now im confused.
how can i tell for sure what my dam computer has in it?
intel said-
For Windows* XP:
Click the Start button >> click Control Panel >> double-click the System applet >> select the Hardware tab >> click the Device Manager button >> expand the System devices listing.
came up with these under system devices
Intel® 82801 PCI Bridge - 244E
Intel® 82801GB LPC Interface Controller - 27B8
Intel® 82801GB PCI Express Root Port 27D0
Intel® 82801GB SMBus Controller - 27DA
Intel® 945G/P PCI Express Root port - 2771
Intel® 945G/P Processor to I/O Controller - 2770
does this mean i have an intel 945
-
Open up your computer, and look for the chip beside the SATA connection
It should be written on the chip
-
IntelĀ® Chipset Identification Utility
System Information
Chipset
Detected Chipset:
Intel® 945 Express Chipset family
Chipset Components
Memory Controller:
82945G/GZ
I/O Controller:
Intel® 82801GB/GR I/O controller hub (ICH7/ICH7R) SATA Controller found in IDE mode
i used an intel program to detect it, i couldnt read what was on the chip, it was too small.
but i had my mtkflash edited to work with it in the past, i had my specs for my chipset right infront of the via 8237 in mtkflash, so thats what showed up everytime i flashed my drive.

But were you flashing MS25's or MS28's in the past?
Just beacuse one can flash a MS25 ddoes not mean that the setup will work for a MS28
The ONLY surefire way I have seen so far is to get the VIA 6421 PCI setup. People have had luck with other chipsets, but it seems to be quite dependant upon BIOS revisions and other hardware, making it very difficult to help someone troubleshoot issues.

iv'e done 25's in the past along with hitachi's with not 1 problem. i edited my own mtkflash and did everything myself with no errors. it wasnt thil i came across this 28 that i had a problem. i updated my drivers for my chipset and used xtremebootmaker to create my boot disc, i used to just use my old mtkflash from before cause i could never get my chipset to show up in bootmaker, now i know what it is, i was able to find it. so now i have a perfect boot disc to use, if it still doesnt work then we can say that the intel 945 doesnt work, and i will be buying a new sata card.
i have to wait til tomorrow to try to flash the drive to see if it will work or not, i dont have the 360 here with me.
thanks for all the help, hopefully i can get it working soon.

No problems - I'd lay bets that a new 6421 card will end up fixing your problem
-
QUOTE(Jer4251 @ Dec 31 2006, 02:33 AM)

I/O Controller:
IntelĀ® 82801GB/GR I/O controller hub (ICH7/ICH7R) SATA Controller found in IDE mode
This is your problem. The MS28 can ONLY be flashed with a VIA chipset. I have the same onboard Intel chipset, and after reading the best tut for flashing this drive, found out that the MS28 has to be done with the VIA chipset. You can get the VIA VT6421A or 6421L PCI cards on ebay really cheap.
Hope this helps you out.

So i dont have to desolder the VCC resistor if i have a VIA VT6421A Sata Card? On my mobo i have VAX347S and Sil 3112 Sata Raid Controller. Anyone know if they cary any VIA VT6421A cards at staples?

correct 2 ways to flash.
NO Soldering = MUST have via 6421 chipset.
Soldering = vcc method any non via chipset will work.
good luck at staples.. doubt they would have it. Best bet is probably newegg.com or ebay.

i succesfully flashed ms25 ms28 and hitach on onboard via 8237 and it flashes ms28 bad flash method 100% perfect, but i use a custom mtkflash (not the one that xtreme boot maker makes me!), sooo i basically do this
I made a USB flash drive using xtreme boot maker
once its all done (textbook guide) i replace the mtkflash files with my custom one which i downloaded , then it all works 100% perfect using 10 second trick (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

i found a controlelr at microcenter i guess ill be taking a ride there tomorrow when i wake up it has the VIA VT6421L Chipset . I dont have a flopy drive in my PC anyone got some instructions on how to use a USB thumb drive to do the flash?
-
http://www.360mods.net/tutorial/Textbook.pdf
whatever you do, dont use a floppy, there goddamn unreliable, lots of read errors, and if you get a read error while flashing...not good.

im geting the VIA chipset SaTA controller tomorrow what size Thumb Drive you you sugest i pickup for this since i dont know how big the files will be. So fromt he pdf guide i just follow everythign and skip over the soldering part ? Also do i follow the MS25 or the MS28 Instructions? My drive is a MS28
-
i use a USB mp3 player to do it (512 memory)
the files are very small, under 1 meg i think, get a 64mb or 128mb whichever you can find.
follow the guide for ms28 bad flash method, its very easy, you should have no problems.

i dont think ipod would work, i have a very cheap USB memory stick style mp3 player (you know the type), and it works fine on this, but i doubt an ipod would work, i wouldnt even try it if i was you, as it might break your ipod

alright thank you for all your help i will let you know tomorrow how everything goes, hopefully GOOD (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Well im off to sleep. Also which version of the Firmware should i use? recommendations please
