Title: Thanks For The Help!
Post by: cardboardbox on December 04, 2006, 12:48:00 AM
After a day of doing most things wrong and wearing out the search feature here, I successfully flashed my Samsung with 4.2a.  Thanks for providing a forum to answer my questions and I guess I'll check back when it stops working in a couple months.   (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif)

One question... my drive is crazy loud and I noticed that 4.2b defaults to quiet/slow mode.  Is that worth trying or should I just stick with 4.2a?  Would 4.2b increase the longevity of my drive?

I run 4.2b and haven't had a problem with it, and it's a lot quieter

does it load noticeably slower?

42a runs backups at the same speed as originals.  if you load an original, then eject and put in a backup, it will revert to slow speed.  42b runs backups at slow speed.  if you load original, then eject it will run backups at normal speed.  so basically 42a will run at slow speed if you run an original 1st.

So far there have been no proven side-effects of using either speed FW. I personally use 4.2b as I love the quietness of it.

I think the slow speed is also meant to help with reading cheap media, but I am not positive.
