Title: Chankast Ported To Xbox
Post by: stezo2k on December 13, 2004, 02:12:00 AM
It has not been released yet, but I have noticed on emutalk, garrofi the author has been talking about the xbox port and the speed optimisations on the emulator, which makes me wonder how fast the emulator now is....

QUOTE
I didn't feel like doing chankast again so I took a long break, but
we have been improving a lot of things in that time. The emu is faster and need less memory to work, an early xbox version is working, it's great to see shenmue 1 on xbox , the sound is better, ...

About the future, we are thinking about releasing the source code and a binary with the latest changes.

great news for the xbox scene anyway :)

Sweet, would never have believed an xbox port possible but there's no arguing with garrofi that's for certain.

  Awesome...with the right skills I think that an excelent port is possible because the low DC internal memory (8MB main and 8MB video ) its sufficient to acommodate textures and the program itself with the Xbox 64MB RAM.

Its funny think to run a DC NES emu within a Xbox DC emu    <

This is very very sexy. I  would love to consolidate the DC into the xbox. I hate the worms 3D games, but now I could have armageddon and world party. chu chu rocket. Ikaruga.... Well, maybe ikaruga would be too much to hope for full FPS just yet. But I can dream can't I?
If you read the forum posts at emutalk, theres a guy who says " Maybe now the noobs will shutup." Yeah right. I predict this thread grows fast very quickly, and spawns a litany of " Wheres the DCps2xbox2gcsaturn emu?" posts.

exactly. what was once said impossible is no longer......

though it is still clear that GC and PS2 (piece of shit anyway) are never gonna be on xbox.

why would anyone want to play PS2 games when you have an xbox anyway?  <

First of all, we have no idea how this one game is running at all on the box, so don't get optimistics. Secondly, there are plenty of games on PS2 that are good and only on PS2, thirdly, dont you think you should start another thread if youre going to change the topic like that?

I havent kept up at all with PC emulators since N64 Emu's were the thing.

It seems to have quite a nice compatibility list: http://www.emutalk.n...ead.php?t=20609

We'll see how it runs on the Xbox, I have a feeling it'll need VERY optimised code...

It would be great being able to play Rival Schools 2 on my xbox.

With a framerate of 20 I would be on cloud nine!  Shenmue "running" on xbox could mean at an acceptable speed.  I bet they really had to tweak the emu, disable stereo, cut some graphics maybe... well sounds nice anyways.~!

I don't see the point in running DreamSNES or NesterDC on a DC emulator for XBOX, when you could just run xSNES9x or FCEU Nes, but then again maybe NesterDC had an option that FCEU doesn't.

Eitherway, if they can support IMAGEs of DC games (ala PSXbox's BIN/CUE) that'd be great.  Just showing this as a "WIP" or "Proof of Concept" is great... even if the emulator isn't playable...

but who am I to jinx the project, awesome..awesome

I dont want to turn this into an I told you so, I'm not that big an ass, but just wanted to say its nice to have people who wont give up working on something they think they could do -- even if a lot of people wont take the idea seriously.  The emu scene would probably never have progressed as much as it has today.  It gives me warm fuzzies to see people hard at work doing things that are claimed to be impossible smile.gif

The first week that it was released lantus told me that a xbox port was likely to become a reality.

I however, being the logical person that i am, assumed that it would not be anytime in the near future. To let the whole public know that it was possible would be asking for a million lamers to spam the DC forums begging for a xbox port. Thats something i would prefer to not exist.

We dont need another Pete's psx plugin situation.

Katmari Damacy, Front Mission 4, Frequency and Amplitude, Devil May Cry, Gungrave, FF series, getting the GTA games First, Armored Core series, Metal Gear Solid 3, Grand Turismo 3 and 4, ICO, Rez, SOCOM I and II, Kingdom Hearts, Onimusha 2 and 3, etc...

There are plenty of good reasons to own a PS2.

That said, PS2 emulation is not likely come to the Xbox.

Agreed, but shenmue 1 & 2 are uncompletable in the present release of chankast.

My advice don't go selling those DC's just yet and if you don't have one get one now while they're still cheap.

Games were much better a couple of years ago, today its nothing but mainstream titles. And that goes for all the consoles, Xb, PS2 and GC.

I just hope they wait to do a public release when it's good and ready.  If they release a laggy or buggy version then we gotta read all the "I told you it wouldn't work posts"

It would be better to not release anything than release something unuseable.

Anyway, exciting news for sure!  RE:CV on Xbox would kick ass!  Keep up the great work!

Just to think, how will the Xbox read Dreamcast games since they are on GD-ROM discs? And since we can't backup Dreamcast games from a PC, how are you going to back them to CD-R (or DVD-R if possible)?

I can see a thread now: "I downloaded this game for Dreamcast & it won't run on the DC Emu....."

Coders cable works as well (Very slowly), you can make your own.

Chankast is actually very compatible as well as fast.

:: to the guy who said xport should port this, The devs who wrote the original are going to stand a much better chance of a decent port, they know the emulator inside out and they obviously know directx pretty damn good as well. Xport lacks this inside knowledge which is going to essential when doing a port of this type (Probably more important than knowing the xbox inside out.)

Oh and of course Garrofi has the source Xport doesn't.

discjuggler to the laymen, you can mount the disc through daemon tools for use with chankast although I hear newer version have problems with some discs.
3.44 works fine with everything I've thrown at it.

::twistedsymphony
VMU support is just a file ala emulated mempaks, psx memory cards etc.

I suspect it will be a while until we see the source (Not this side of the xmas). If anyone can port it it will be the devs of the emu and if they can't I doubt anyone will. be able to get the speed.

If you already downloaded the .iso/.cdi/.nrg image and burned a CD-R, extracting the data is a piece of cake, as a lot of folks on the scene have more DC backups than retails discs.

Is this some kind of pissing contest?  I am not trying to say that there are not good games on the Xbox, or that the PS2 has the best games, or that the PS2 is the only system worth owning.  I am saying that there are plenty of good games on the PS2 that ARE NOT on the Xbox, and will never be on the Xbox.  If you have to tell yourself that the PS2 sucks and all the people who own one are gay to feel better about your console purchase, then you are only hurting yourself limiting the amount of games that you are going to play.

QUOTE
Another RPG?

Xbox has always had a weak exclusive RPG library.  This is largely due to the poor sales of Xboxes in Japan, which is where most RPGs are sold.  Although it's first dibs on the Starwars Knights of the Old Republic series is a good thing.

No, I didn't mean Ninja Gaiden, you flaming fanboy.  If I had ment Ninja Gaiden, I would have said Ninja Gaiden.

Don't get me wrong, I liked Ninja Gaiden, but it is no more of a replacement and subsitute for Onimishua than 'Band of Brothers' is a substitue for 'Saving Private Ryan'.  It's ok to like both.

You must live in some land were it is illegal to own more than one console.

All that said, I am finished derailing thise thread.  Continue with the Dreamcast Emulation talk.

I have played the Dreamcast version of Rez as well and it is not superior, it is the exact same game.

Not played it with a vga box have you?

It does look a lot nicer on the DC (And yes I do have a DC and a PS2 and Rez for both) using the VGA box a real pity it was never ported to the xbox and I'm absolutely certain even if chankast is ported to the xbox it will be unplayable (To timing sensitive).

Speed?
Compatibility?

If these two bits of information prove disappointing, then the port will be more interesting oddity than emulator.  (And how many releases and months would we have to wait before we can play a game the way it was meant to be played?)

As a gamer, I'll get excited when we hear how it's performing.
(Though from a technical standpoint, I'm still impressed with the accomplishment.)

Compatability will probably be half reasonable if the win32 version is anything to go by, providing they have reduced the memory requirements.

Win32 Chankast is pretty fast but I doubt it can be so fast as to work consistently speedy on xbox-level comparitivly retarded hardware, even with all the optimisations in the world. Dreamcasts are practically free anyway so anyone who complains about the speed when it comes out will get laughed at, I imagine.

well it runs prety well on a p3 with 128mb ram i got a p3 500 with 512 ram works good.

Might work ok on xbox since we have the cpu power but mem wise 64 megs of ram might do us in.

Unless we all go do the 128MB ram mods.

Nothing will cure the insatiable lust for a new emulator by the noobs. Nothing will change that unless Iriez implements a 1,2,3 strikes you're out system in the emulation forum. I think that would fix alot of the problems around here. Enough projects have been delayed, or cancelled by the ingrates.

N00b's thirst for emulation will be satisfied when XBox can play GC and PS2 games.

Now all we need is for some programmer to suddenly come on the scene and says "Wow, I made a perfect PS2 emulator that runs semi-full speed on a Pentium 2!"

I mean, that's practically just around the corner!

Meh, I don't think Noobs (in general) will ever be satisfied with emulation...just my thought.

smile.gif.  Granted, xSNES9x was just a sight to see due to it's gorgious menu, but why bitch about something that all you did was download?

I still get constant IMs from friend's asking if a PS2 Emulator for XBOX or a GC one will ever come out.... even after I try to explain what emulation is, how hardware works.. all the hear is "ugh.. not yet..".  So there is no point to explain I just ignore them now.

I've loved the emulation scene ever since I first bumped into the first Gameboy emulator, then when I found iNES, long before the great breathrus of SNES9x (OMG... Sound was AWESOME), along with NESTicle etc...

It's been great to have all these emus evolved since the begining, then become open source for great porters to put them on the XBOX platform for us....

As for the 3 strikes rule... yeah 3 general strikes yeah.. but if someone asks something dumb, like for ROMS/Images, give 'em only 1 warning, if they do it agian ban 'em.  It's annoying to read through 8 posts of requets only to find 1 good important message.

I never wanted Bungie to hurry on the developement. I didn't care how long it would've taken. And I also didnt expect it to be perfect, but better yes. I mean did you take a look at the ending

I agree full-heartedly.  By telling people about this in-the-works emulator, the developers accomplished nothing.  Perhaps people will worship the ground they walk on for a while, but if news doesn't come out on a fairly regular basis then people will turn.

The developers should have at least waited until they had a measurable FPS count and screenshots.  We haven't had any news on this emulator since the first post of the thread, correct?

Oh well.  Whatever....

There has been no new news since a long while ago. Last I heard the creator of Chankast was said to have been on vacation and has not yet worked on anything Chankast related yet. Do not raise your hopes too high because a playable Chankast port does not seem likely.
