I tried patching both keys into the firmware but it wont work always same 'insert disc into xbox 360' message whichever xbox i put the drive in, i tried restore.bat but it comes up with an error.
I have a full firmware backup for both drives (broken and new replacment) does anyone know the 'command prompt' i need to type to just overwrite with the backup ie '59FLASH f orig.bin'? as that doesnt seem to work for me

to restore your drive.. all you have to do is at command prompt (of course command prompt should be at directory where restore.bat and all other files with release are)
all you have to type is restore.bat (driveletter) ie: restore.bat F
if you get an error when typing that in... you are of course gonna have to repeat the error to us on the forum for us to help you any further.
on a side note...
when you did the flash for the first time with garyopa release you did it with a unique 4 digit number.
You SHOULD have or should be able to know what that number was.... and find the folder the opa release made for you while flashing the drive.
Now there are files in there that hold your original.bin (original firmware) and key.bin that hold your dvd key.
these files for one ARE NOT NEEDED when doing the restore process!!
the hitachi firmware PATCHES your firmware on the dvd drive.. it does NOT fully reflash your firmware as the samsungs do. This is why the opa release can simply do a restore to a drive without any other original files.. (it knows what it patched based on the version of the drive.. so it UNPATCHES it to what the original version was)
So.. the problem you have might be the what version number flash are you using... JUNE 59dj drives have problems in certain opa releases.. hence why you should be using the most recent release but I believe the most recent release says to restore the dvd first to original then reflash to current hacked firmware revision.
Again just try to do the restore if I were you I would use the restore from the most current release... it should work fine. Your dvd key should not be wrong because you do not have the option to flash the drive with a file.. it patches the drive for you durring flashing process.
Then come back with what the error is if any when typing out restore.bat F <--- if F is your drive letter.

Well, glad it turns out fine but interesting cos your case is the first that I read with random restore failure at different parts ...

heh you must not have seen mine with the others then even garyopa has commented on it. (new firmware versions though from like 3 back fixed the issue supposedly.)
