Last week I tried to flash a ms28 drive, no luck at all. I couldn't get the dump process started. Most time MTKflash reported that there was no drive found. Some times the counter started but it never came further than the 00%. I've tried it on 3 different pc's with different chipsets, one of them I'm sure people reported succesfull flashes.
With different bootdiscs (freedos, MSDOS, USB, Diskette) with differente versions of MTKflash (hex edited versions from the v41 guide I've found. First I've tried with SAM360 but then I manualy typed the command line to try.
I've used the ODD / DVD adapter from Team Xecuter to power the drive. I've tried in both modes (normal and modeb) no luck at all. So finally I decided to give up and rebuild the system.
Powering the 360 gives me an error. So I reopened the 360 to look if I perhaps forgot some cables.
After some fuzzling around I found the drive will not even eject anymore.
So I connected the drive to my pc to check if it will eject but it won't. The drive did eject before (with the ODD) so I don't know what happened.
It looks like the complete power of the drive is away. So i think a component of this drive is defective.
- Does anyone know what component could be dead? Then maybe I can try to replace it.
- Can the wire trick (applied via the ODD adapter of executer) be the problem?
Maybe someone knows some things to try. I don't know what ruined my drive because I couldn't read at all. I'm very sure it's not bad-flashed because I didn't came so far.

i'll post a Hi-Res picture later, hope someone can help me out.
If all else fails do I just remove the SST chip, read it and dump it on a new sammy using MTKflash.
or do i have to remove the chip from the new sammy drive and programme it using a programmer such as labprog/up48?

the place were u remove smd resistor and attach two bits o wire ? ...
maybe summit not right there ?... cannot se proper on pic ..

The pictures you gave really need to be higher res(better quality whatever) for us(or anyone that knows anything) to be able to help more...
Again BUT..
Picture one where you did the removal of resistor..
When I first looked at those connections it is not easy to see at all but my first thought is I think I see solder flow or silver leading away from the bottom (if looking at your pic in the default posistion.)
NOT the wire you still have connected.. remove that.
Then get a magnifying glass and look at the pads left IF ANY? that the resistor use to attach to.
Look at the traces leading away from those pads... I do see silverish traces leading away from that resistor.. I wonder what they look like connected to the pads. maybe they are broken.
Next while you have you magnification going.. look at the resistor on both sides and their connections.
It looks burnt on one side more than the other...but it could just be the picture.
If you get some sort of good magnification utensil.. it helps soooo much in seeing bad connections.
If anything clean up those connections.. and bridge those 2 pads with solder and see what happens.
Just some ideas.

I can't use bad flash recovery method because I havnt got an original.bin saved, because when i tried to save original.bin the ssving process does not go past 00%
I did hear a small electric current blow when i connected the two wires while doing the VCC method. am thinking if I have blown somthing (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)
Also i get error e 64, does that mean my SST chip is curropt and my key is lost forever?

that error 64 is just the box does not see the firmware on the dvd drive.
YOU MUST BRIDGE the connection in place of the resistor you took off with a blob of solder.
That is a must before knowing anything.
From there see what error you get (yes it could be the same thing).
If say one of those resistors next to the one you took off is not connected or the tracks are lifted.. I beleieve you would get that error also ... the box just thinks there is no firmware.
You are going to have to fix those connections to be able to go any further.
then multi meter everything to make sure you have connectivity. And also make sure something is not touching anything . those resistors are pretty close together and easy to make solder touch each other.

In my case I didn't open the drive at all. No VCC trick, just tried to read out the firmware with mtkflash and a VIA chipset, that's all. I've powered it with the PC Powersupply using the Xecuter ODD conn. kit pcb.
Angry Rabbit, thank you for your suggestion, I'll take a look at that eight legged freak (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) and let you if I find something. Can you tell me what to read out with the multi meter? Or just see if some legs connecting?
If that smd is the problem, can I rip it out of something elso? I mean, is it commonly used in something? Like DVD drives or so, or drive from the older xbox? Or is there any substitute for it?
I'll open the drive and look at the pcb and try to find out it's state..

On the LHS pins of the smd starting from
pin 1 = 2.5v
pin 2 = 5v
pin 3 = 3.3v
pin 4 = 5v

I'll try this in the weekend because I need to buy a new pencil for my multi-meter... Then I'll try to find out if the voltages are matching.
