Title: Hitachi Key Insertion Tutorial
Post by: Gazcoigne on October 05, 2006, 04:42:00 AM
I did the unthinkable and bricked a hitachi drive, and then set upon a quest to replace it. I found no tutorials to help me, so i decided to write one as i have seen a few topics on how to do this.

heres a link to the tut

Hitachi_Key_Insertion_Tutorial_v1.2.PDF

if the mods think this is good enough i'd be honoured if it was added to the tutorial list!!

any questions please contact me

can you do this with a new 32ce drive because in the garyopa package there is no flash32?

I have updated the tutorial to fix a few issues that a few people msged me about. now i have used the more up to date 47flash app as people did not know where to get flashsec47 and other variables of it. hopefully i have made it a bit more foolproof.

again any questions comments please leave a post.

thank you for the guide, your effort is appreciated

so i followed the steps outlined in the guide, got the orig key, dumped the new firmware, inserted the key, encrypted it, flashed it

when i boot up, the middle LED is always blinking as if its in mode b. i put an orignial in the drive, i hear the drive spinning up but the xbox still says "opening" as if i ejected the drive. when i put a backup in the drive, the drive does not spin up (expected, it has non "fixed" firmware)

ill read up a bit more, and find look for that error guide to see what this means, but any other help in the meantime would be great

ive used  the 7in1 v2.1 on my hitachi 46dh and it worked great- i didnt try v2.2 for 2 reasons: i dont want to revert back to and old fw and screw anything up AND my xbox 360 died! again! god damn MS repaired my 360 and it lasted 3 weeks before dying again

so try the 7in1 2.1 if you dont mind not having stealth FW because the included readme is very simple

how are you getting the drive into modeb? sounds to me like you have used the cross wire method and held it too long. ive had some ppl pm me about continuous modeb, and i dont really know what you can do about it. does the drive constantly eject? i think ur laser may be damaged also, as it spins for originals, but not for backups, due to the difference in reflectivity.

I agree, this is a great tut and is very helpful. The one question that I have, is the 90004000 1000 address where the key is on ALL versions of Hitachi drives (78 excluded) or just FW rev 47 ??

yes this key location is the same for all hitachi drive models, even the newer 78 revision.

hi m8
i`m stuck
i`ve got a copy of the dead firmware drive , a copy of the new firmware drive , i take the key from the dead drive and insert it into the new drive , then flash it back ? , cause this isnt happening for me, when i try to flash back it says , deviceIOcontrol<> failed 0
failed to initiate modeb <sense: 05/20/00>
the firmware from the dead drive is from the birdy flasher. and the firmware for the new drive is from the garyopa flasher , but when i dump the firmware with memdump that does dump a 256kb bin file, when i run it through 360 firmware toolbox i get an error firmware version not supported or not a valid firmware file,
can i just flash the whole dead firmware onto the new drive , if so what do i use

no you cannot simply flash the full image, if you read my tut you would know why.

strange that the fw toolbox isnt reading the fw correctly it would lead me to believe that it is a bad dump possibly, as the fw toolbox should read it perfectly. are you using v20 of the toolbox? try hexing the fw and see if it is valid. if it is all FFFFFFFF then it is no good.

from that error it seems your new drive is not in modeb, how are you putting the drives into modeb?
Title: Hitachi Key Insertion Tutorial

i`m thinking that my original firmware on new drive is now corrupt but i have a copy of the first read that i`m 100% sure is correct , i think i need to put this back on , how do i do this , then i will run through your process again , i`m using the 2 wire trick to get it into modeb that works everytime, if i can dump the firmware using memdump then i must be in modeb ?
Title: Hitachi Key Insertion Tutorial
Post by: Gazcoigne on November 02, 2006, 09:19:00 AM
yes u have got modeb if you are able to see the drive in windows and read/flash to it, so thats not the problem.

however the fact u have got a bad firmware from it is worrying. the fw cant be corrupt on the drive as u have not been able to flash it yet. and for it to work the fw has to be ok and intact, you will only be changing the key in it and you wont be able to replace it. perhaps the dump itself was corrupted and not the actual fw on the drive.

try to dump it again and see what you get, or run an opa release on it to flash it to 2.3 and use one of the dumped fw files in the key change process i outline in my tutorial.

I am having a similiar problem with you tutorial. I bought a motherboard without a DVD drive but it came with the mobo key, so I got a used DVD drive and tried to inject the key. I wasnt sure if the original or a hacked firmware was on the drive so first I used the restore command. I then did the memdumb like the tut says and injected the key with the  Firmware toolbox app and saved the encripted file. I then tried to flash it and everything went good but it would not read originals. At first I though maybe I had the worng key, but then I tried to inject the key of my personal 360 and tested if the drive would work with my 360 but no luck. I am doing somthing wrong? I have a feeling it has to do with the firmware on the drive when I bought it, is there a way to fix it? I forgot to mention that I am using the commands from the Maximus-Garyopa_XTRM-HITACHI_v2_3_Stealth_Rev2 package and if I dump it and check the key it matches the one that I attempted to inject.

hi

i have had a msg from a member dajuice showing that there was a small bit that i missed in the tutorial, and i have revised it to v1.2 to fix this. basically i forgot to add that you need to press the replace key button in firmware toolbox BEFORE you press the generate encrypted fw button, or else it will not replace the key and encrypt the fw with the old key instead. apologies to anyone that this has caused confusion or time spent with the wrong key as the post above.

mikey, try this. dump the fw of the new drive as it is now, then follow the new tut. before you flash the new encrypted fw, open it in the toolbox app first to verify the correct key is in the fw. then do the rest as per the tutorial. it shouldnt really matter what FW revision is on the drive original or hacked as long as you dump it first and work with that image only.

hit me with a msg or pm if you are still stuck.

here is a link to the new tutorial if originalcompgeek could update the first post in this thread to suit also.

http://38.119.88.37/...torial_v1.2.PDF

once again please support my attempt to get this added to the tutorial list ive had so many pm's from kind members asking for this it seems silly not to make it easy to find.

thanks for everyones support!!

wow nice tutorial!

I just bought a 360 and i got the Horrible 0078FK.  I am planning on swapping it with either older hitachi or Samsung.

Now my question is Can i follow your tutuorial for this? I know my drive might not be readable by PC b/c of the lack of FW hackablility.

Any help or support will be helpful to all the 0078FK owners!

DeviceIOControl<> failed 0
failed to initiate modeB (sense: 05/20/00)

Its in modeb because i was able to rip the fw and it was detected in windows.

If this tutorial hasn't been pinned, then it should be because it was the ONLY reason I attempted to buy a replacement DVD rom ($95) after bricking my 47dj. It was easy to understand and follow. My 360 was just a $400 door stopper before that. Now I got it up and running because of it and flashed with the Maximus Garyopa firmware. Great job Gazcoigne. Thanks for taking your time to put together this tutorial and helping others that may need it as well.

http://www.yourfilehost.com/media.php?cat=...torial_v1.2.PDF

for the error

DeviceIOControl<> failed 0
failed to initiate modeB (sense: 05/20/00)

just do it again in the same cmd window hit up arrow then enter sometimes it does this i dont know why!!

as for the 78 as far as im aware of you cant read the fw by software, only by removing the chip and placing it in a willem programmer, so i dont know what you are going to do with it. perhaps a swapout at walmart if ur in US?

thanks!!

This injects the key only into the part of the Rom chip where the key is located.

Is there a way to flash the entire chip, like I said I have followed this tut exactly and tried with two different mobos and two different keys with no luck so I am thinking that my FW got somehow corrupted (IMG:style_emoticons/default/uhh.gif) I have tried using the restore command also with no luck, and when I check the key after I save the encypted file it matches the one that I tried to inject. Could I use a  47dj FW dump that I know is good, inject my key and flash the entire chip?

mikey - no you cant flash a full image by software, it will brick the drive completely read the tut for the explanation why. it can be done externally but that involves removing the TSOP chip and programming it externally.

the one just keep doing it over and over until it does it again, it does it sometimes just keep trying!! it will work eventually.

I followed your tutorial but somehow it's not injecting the new key.

After I do the "47flash e orig-e.bin 90004000 1000" and get "Done", I then use the read.bat (from gary 2.3) to create a firmware dump. When I check the new dump, it still has the old key instead of the new key.

EDIT: My mistake.. After I flashed it with FW2.3, I checked 00004ef0 and it contains the new key. Thanks for the great tutorial.

once you have got the key correctly from the hitachi fw you simply insert it into the samsung fw and flash the complete fw image to the drive, no encryption is used for samsung.

and ps the link for the tutorial is still the same as the one on page 3

Great tutorial, I am eagerly awaiting my new 47DJ driver, will use this tut.

Question, can I use this procedure instead of running RESTORE.BAT to fully
restore my original firmware onto the drive??

The reason for me bricking my drive was because the RESTORE process hung
when restoring from Maximus GaryOPA 2.2 Stealth.

I also read others have experienced the same, so if putting your DVD-Drive
back into it's original state can also be done with this procedure, why not?

The RESTORE process goes through many steps, this only uses 1 !! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

is any chance gazcoigne can help with maximus toolbox 2.0 and 0078fk drive?
expecting programmer soon, got spare chips and ready to go.
i can read chip with programmer, and get floating key with toolbox 2.0.
not really sure correct steps/stages in using toolbox 2.0 to prepare hacked firmware and key insertion.
do i just load xtreme v1.6 (currently recommended for 78fk) into toolbox 2.0 and copy and paste my own original key into box then encrypt?

thanks for the support guys im hoping to update it soon with info for changing drive id in both hitachi and samsung fw, if i can get time with my new job lol.

Yeah, most swapping of drives will require you to change the drive model other than injecting the key alone. Maybe can ask myfranco to help out with the tutorial since we spent some time discussing on the various aspect and the most important, he verified the swapping of samsung to hitachi drive at the following thread http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?sho...9861&st=135

it will help you get the key from the drive and to put it into the samsung fw, but the dumping and flashing of the samsung fw isnt covered in my tutorial, so it may not be of much use.

also you will have to make the samsung fw 'appear' as a hitachi fw in order to avoid e66 on the console.

bad move you should have got a drive the same as the one that died. search for e66 fix that will show you how to do the fw faking trick, and follow geebee/textbook tutorial v41 to learn how to dump and flash a samsung ms25.

Hi Gazcoigne,

Have been trying for 6 hours now and I always get:
The drive is in modeb as I can see under wnidows and dump the FW.

DeviceIOControl() failed 22
failed to configure upload (sense: 00/00/00)

After this error the drive looses modeb so I can't redo in the same cmd window.

Can you please help?

Thanks

Sure, here is my config:

DVD ROM Hitachi GDR3120L - VER 47DJ (Mfg. Dec 2005)
Sata chipset is Intel 82801GB

Modeb is obtained with Slax LiveCD and also tried Slax2 Alpha 1.
Both seem to work as I can see the drive under Windows XP Pro.
I could successfully memdump the FW and can read the key.

Problem is the key insertion which always fail with the error reported previously.

Thanks again

i honestly dont like slax, i think that coz its a software method of modeb it can be taken out of it by errors etc.

i always use the team xecuter con kit, which forces the hardware into modeb and keeps it there, and i get errors sometimes but if i press up in cmd and do it again itusually goes through after a few atempts.

i dont know why the error is there, perhaps a problem in the flash app.

try to put the drive into modeb with the cross wire method. use a resistor if you are concerned with bricking the drive. then try it again.

i take it you are using the correct version of flash app for your drive ie 47flash for 47d, 559flash for 59 etc?

Can you perform a successful flash mod with xtreme 2.3? Cos the key insertion is not much diff. from firmware mod just that it flashed different sector of your drive firmware.

Try in Windows Safe Mode ...

Hi Gazcoigne,

It finally worked!

The Slax LiveCd must be booted from a different DVD-ROM than the Xbox LG Hitachi and then it works.

Not so obvious as people tend to focus on Hitachi DVD itself...

In summary, the working sequence is:

1. place the Slax LiveCd in the normal PC DVD-ROM (A) and not in the Xbox360 DVD-ROM
2. connect the LG Hitachi DVD-ROM (B) to the PC Sata port. (B) must be powered from the Xbox360.
3. Boot the PC on (A) and load Slax LiveCd. Have noticed that it works better when PC is connected to internet, otherwise it stops time to time. The Slax2 Alpha1 is more consistent; just boot and wait until HDD stops on black screen
4. Onece Slax is booted, keep your (B) powered on and connected to PC Sata. Reset the PC and boot with the normal Windows XP
5. The LG Hitachi DVD-ROM (B) should be now visible under Windows Explorer (hence on modeb). Click properties to make sure you target the right drive letter

Hope this subtle important detail can be added in your tutorial.

Hi Langnao, have read many great posts from you. Keep up the good work!

Cheers

I know I'm probably going to get slated here but I've got to ask the question....

If my Hitachi drive (47DJ) if fried, but I have the 5 .bin files from the original firmware ie. 47_21, gdr47, key, now, was.
Can I just put a new 47DJ drive (from ebay) into the 360 and run the backup.bin file from the original firmware folder I have to restore the NEW drive to make it useable in my 360???
If yes is the command

restore.bat *  (* is drive letter)   or do I have to put the 4 digit number in aswell ie.   restore.bat * 1234

Thanks in advance..

I have a quick question for ya.  I have a friend that is giving me a Hitachi Drive and I have his original firmware for the drive and everything along with his key.  He is upgrading to a Samsung drive.  For me to inject my key in the drive could I just open the was.bin file (GaryOPA v2.3) in Firmware Toolbox v3 and inject my key into it and encrypt it and then go into dos prompt and type "restore (drive letter) (number i used to flash)"?  Would that inject my key on the drive?

Free bump.

The guide is great and did warrant being in the pinned guides but instead of constantly requesting a pin here, you should have PMed a mod. I don't visit this forum often and if Texbook wouldn't have mentioned it in a PM that you wanted it pinned, I wouldn't even have seen this.

Regardless, good work on the guide. It's been added to pinned guides and first post has been updated with the newest PDF.

I did follow all tutorial stpes and my drive now isn't play any game (originals and backups) back then, I did try the restore.bat from garyopa but i had no success(one error message appears on the screen). The drive makes some strange noises like if it did want to read the disc and the disc starts to spin but the "eject message appears on dashboard.

PS.: Drive goes into modeb without problem.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Thank You,

I needed this tut!

I successfully swaped my drive

Recommendation:
Add a chart in the beginning to show which flash program to use.
My replacement drive was a V36.
After looking at the batch files to flash the drive, I determined the file I needed was 46FLASH

MEMDUMP.EXE from the releases can be used instead of MEMDUMP_WIN.EXE (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

great tutorial guys, been reading it since day 1.

of course now I have a bricked Hitachi rom version 46dh.  I am now replacing with rom version 59.  I understand that I have to replace the key, no problem there, however since these are hitachis both do I still need to spoof my new 59 to the older 46 for my xbox to read it properly?  I am also using Maximus version 4.0 now.

I have all the keys that are needed from old and new drives as well.

Step 1 inject old original 46dh key into new 59 drive
Step 2 encrypt new firmware
Step 3 Flash with new original.
Step 4 ?? do I need to spoof or can I leave it alone.
Step 5 ?? Also when I flash with iextreme do I use the 46 FW or the 59FW.

I can complete from there no problem, sorry hadnt had to flash a drive since 1st release.

TIA for all the help.

After installing the PassKey and extracting the firmware from the drive and creating a orig.bin file of your Hitachi 79 firmware put it in your Samsung ixtreme folder. Then click (Make iXtreme firmware.cmd) and make sure you select to have it spoof the firmware as Hitachi 79. Flash that firmware to your samsung drive and you are good to go.

thanks Ranger.  Just before you posted I dumped the new MS28 then used toolbox 4.6 to replace the key and then used the tools/spoof firmware option.  Toolbox now shows rom version as MS28 and spoofed as 0079.

Is this a proper process as well or should I not be using tool box for this?

thanks Ranger.  Just before you posted I dumped the new MS28 then used toolbox 4.6 to replace the key and then used the tools/spoof firmware option.  Toolbox now shows rom version as MS28 and spoofed as 0079.

Is this a proper process as well or should I not be using tool box for this?

Cheers, VrT

Yes that is another way to do it as well.

I think that this thread needs some serious updating if this is the case.  I read through pages and pages of post talking about changing hex editing in order to change drives.  Saving the fw.bin file as numerous different names to facilitate the editing etc. etc. With countless links to other posts on the same issue.
Not to mention that not a single link for this tutorial seems to work.

So the reality is:

You can use either
1) iXtreme firmware.cmd from the ixtreme package
2) Firmware tool box 4.6 - tools/spoof firmware.

IT IS THAT SIMPLE?

Cheers to all the figure this shite out for us.

VrT

Don't worry about the tutorial.  Just read the last page of this post.
I figured from reading through all this it would be difficult.

IT iS NOT.
Use toolbox 4.6

or firmware.cmd in ixtreme package.

SOooo simple.

was looking for this file myself today, damn annoying when the link everyone mentions is DEAD

here's a new link, looks like filename was slightly altered

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=0FK2UP2R

correct filename should be: hitachi_key_insertion_tutorial_v1.2.pdf

might I suggest you upload to your favourite site so we have a couple of "Mirrors".

Note, many upload sites deletes files when they are inactive for 30 days

Quick question regarding this tutorial-

I'm replacing a dead Samsung ms28 with a working Hitachi 3120L. Is everything in this still applicable? I don't care so much about playing backups, because all my discs are fairly well kept. I absolutely do not want to be banned from Live- that won't be a problem will it?

Just wondering if the Hit59DJ can be spoofed as a Lite-On within a Lite-On mobo? Let me know if it can be done or if someone has done it already.
