Title: Possible To Slow Down The Dvd-rom?
Post by: mterlouw on January 08, 2006, 01:05:00 PM
Does anyone think it would be possible to slow down the DVD-ROM reader in the xbox 360? That thing is so loud, it makes me want to disconnect it and run my games from the hard drive.
In any case, do you think that if you slowed down the thing, games would still work fine, just with slightly longer load times? Or does it need to be that fast to stream hi-def video or something?

I really wouldn't do that if I were you.

Where do you people live that complain about the 360 noise, a monastery? Seriously, if you anything else running in the room, like a pc, air purifier etc, you can't hear the thing at all.

I can't hear my dvd drive either. I mean I am either watching a movie or playing a game. Even at a low volume I can't hear it. Stop complaining and hack the firmware to slow it down.

I got one of the quiet drives, but another of the units a friend has now has a drive that sounds like a 60mm Delta fan spinnin' away. Not enjoyable, but it's hardly a major problem. Anyway, if you wanted to slow the drive down you could add some blu tack to the disc and have it scrape against the insides of the drive.
NOTE: I am joking. Please don't try this.

My DVD drive is louder with some games than with others. Madden and Quake 4 are a LOT louder than COD2.

Ok I wasn't really trying to spark a debate about whether or not the drive is too loud, or if the noise level is even an issue. I guess I could have left out the complaint I made; sorry about that.
Since this is a technical forum, what I wanted to know is, is there a valid reason why the drive must always be spinning so fast? Does it need to spin that fast in order to stream hi-dev video? Or could it possibly spin slower, but with the penalty of longer load times?

You could scratch the hell out of your discs. It will slow down whenver it has trouble reading the disc contents. Speed is purely tied to data rate. You will notice that it runs a lot slower for a movie than a game.
If you want slower loads, it can go slower. But good luck making it do it.

RPM equals data rate (and inability to read equals slower rpm) so if you were to slow down the disc you'd make your loading times longer. Twice as long or more if you want to slow it to 4X which would be almost silent.
Something to consider is the label design (printed) of a game. The litho offset print uses several layers of paint to achieve an image and if the layers are inbalanced so one side of the disc has more paint than the other, at high rpm this would cause more noise. Hopefully MS will control the label designs in the future to take this into account.

i think the drive is shockingly loud, too. i even found out that premiums suffer from the same thing (seems the hdd really isn't being used much for caching then). i'm currently using a premium that i borrowed from work to attempt laser adjustment on (didn't work after three attempts, gave up and closed it). all i've been doing on it is downloading and playing demos off the hdd and it's bliss.
when i borrowed the core pack a few weeks ago, it was noisy as heck unless i turned the 5.1 volume up. i mostly play it on my 14" telly at low volume so would LOVE for a quiet drive.
the one in my premium is an LG/Hitachi one but i've seen toshiba-sammys. Anyone know which one is quieter? of course mine won't read discs so i can't tell!

The speed can be determined with software. Or at least on a normal PC. So I do not see why MS shouldnt be able to implament a feature where the users can select what they prefer (Fast Loads, Medium, Silent).
But I do agree, its to loud. Maybe complaints to MS would help bring such a feature in.

Well we have two premiums and theyre not loud at all, the hiss of the drive is barely louder than the fans that spin at ilde-speed almost all the time aswell. Both have a tray that is NOT SIMILAR to the one shown in llamma.com drive-padding tutorial so guess thats the OTHER drive then (not hitachi-lg).

maybe those two have toshiba-samsung drives?
the first pics i ever saw of the insides of a 360 showed a toshiba-samsung drive and i thought 'oh crap!', basing this judgement on the dodginess of the original xbox's toshiba-samsung drives (not to be confused with the samsung drives which are ace), in terms of reliability.
i've opened two 360's - one premium and one core - and they both have hitachi-LG drives.
speaking of which, it seems you can't swap the dvd drive in a 360

I just tried something. I had my DVD drive on my PC run at 16x (~22MB/s) and its loud like the 360. But the copying of data is rather quick. Then I slowed the drive down to 8x (~11MB/s) and its quiet. Its fairly fast and quiet.
Note to MS....Add a fucking feature that allows us to slow the drive down. The loudness is fucking annoying! If Nero can do it then you should be able too!
