Just thought I would start a new thread to discuss ways to play wmv (and maybe other types of video files) with the kiosk disc.
This is what I have done so far:
- I extracted the iso using Qwix.
- Then I deleted all of the items of the demo folder and all of the videos in the video folder.
I then tried several times, unsuccesfully, to edit the gamedb.ini file in the en-en folder like the previous poster had done burnt the disc and could not get the video to show up in the menu. So then I tried to change the gamedb.ini file in all of the folders that had one (all of the kiosk folders as well as the language folders) and that still did not do the trick.
- So next I just renamed the wmvhd file that I was trying to play to "kameo.wmv" and selected the Kameo game movie demo in the menu to play.
- Made a new iso with qwix and burned onto a cd-r with nero
This did the trick and the video played. The only problem is that the video played very choppy and stopped after about 10 seconds. I think this might have been a result of the fact that I burnt the image on a cd-r and not a dvd-r and/or the file size was too small (the whole disc was only 100 megs the movie was only 60)
Does anyone know which gamedb this poster: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?s=&...dpost&p=3147698 edited and if his movie played "chopply" thanks

Ok so far what i have discovered... you dont need all this stuff, only one language-folder for your region is enough (i only have the de-de on my disc) you can delete the rest of the language-folders, then theres only the demos, images, items, videos, the de-de (or whatever lang you need) and the 5 main files default.xex, kioskmain.xzp, skin.xzp and the two font-files left...
you can delete the other folders as well (demos/images/items/videos) but then you have to patch your gamedb.ini, hwdb.ini and kiosk.ini accordingly... the three ini-files are a bit documented and you have plenty of examples in it, so it should not be a problem to modify to your wishes...
So i replaced all the game-demos and put wmv-hd files there to have a nice video-disc...just change the line VideoPath=game:\videos\Dolphins_1080.wmv to your needs...
you can also edit the kiosk.ini as in this example:
[Attract]
InactiveTime=2
Attract0_Video=game:\videos\T2_720.wmv
Attract1_Video=game:\videos\Robotica_720.wmv
then after 2 seconds it plays the two videos...
or go in the media section of the kiosk and edit there:
Button3_Text=Movies
Button3_IconPath=app:\icn-64-Video.png
Button3_Action=PlayVideo
Button3_ActionParams=game:\videos\Dolphins_1080.wmv
Theres a lot you can play with... (just replace all images as you like) ;-)

I have MCE to stream my WMVHD files, but I have been playing with the kiosk disc to play WMV HD files.
I have made a custom gamedb.in for all the clips off of http://www.wmvhd.com/ and it works a treat.
I put all the new clips in \videos\wmvhd\ to keep it tidy. I have also made custom icons and screen shots for the menu and a custom WMVHD banner.
Note:- I have not renamed the files from wmvhd.com so you can use this code and download them yourself. Just make sure you put them in \videos\wmvhd\
Not sure if it is against the rules but I could zip up the icons and screen shots I made to make it even easier. I will wait for an admin/mod to advise first.

The only clip here you can't get from wmvhd.com is the Pioneer HDTV demo. You can grab that from the pioneer site here:-

A few questions:
- You deleted all of the kiosk directories and just edited the gamedb.ini file that is in the language folder? I noticed that all of the kiosk directories had their own gamedb file.
- Did you have to leave the existing files in the gamedb.ini file and add more or were you able to delete the ones that were there?
- Did you have to resize your icons and images to the exact size of the ones that were already in there?
- You were able to nake a sub directory in the video directory with no problem?
- did you guys get any choppiness when they played?
- What program did you use to create the iso file? Is qwix ok?
thanks!

A few questions:

I have deleted all the kiosk folders. The only folders I have are:-
demos
demos\Hexic
en-en
images
items
videos
videos\wmvhd
- Did you have to leave the existing files in the gamedb.ini file and add more or were you able to delete the ones that were there?
You can delete all code in gamedb
- Did you have to resize your icons and images to the exact size of the ones that were already in there?
Well I made new icons and images with my own names. I kept the icons the same at 64x64 and images at 352x198
- You were able to nake a sub directory in the video directory with no problem?
Yes. Why would there be a problem? As long as you create your video/image lins correctly you can put them anywhere.
- did you guys get any choppiness when they played?
Not from DVD. Only from CDR when the wmvhd bitrate is over 8mbps
- What program did you use to create the iso file? Is qwix ok?
I dont mess with iso's. I just use Nero and drag and drop my contents into a UDF project.
thanks!

xboxgeek, you should post a tutorial on how to do all of what you did: insert new icons, make new banner, change the blade name, etc. there isnt a tutorial for anything like this yet, you should be the first!
also, has anyone experimented with that videora converter yet? tried running any movies that they converted that were originally incompatible with the 360?

If this is as far as we get in playing WMV-HD's on x360, I pretty sure there'll be loads of front-ends for PC to make these disks. But I doubt it. I'm sure we'll figure out what's the real WMV-HD player on the HDD is and will be able to use it (and pause films).
And before that we'll find out with what drive code x360 uses to refer to external hdd's (as it now refers game: to dvd disc in drive) and will be able to play stuff off the HDD, possibly just named 1.wmv, 2.wmv etc, by using the kiosk disk and a modified .ini files.

XBoxgeek..many thanks for taking the time to post this. I'm looking forward to having a play tonight

A few people have pmed me asking for the icons/screen shots for the WMV-HD gamedb.ini file that I made.
I am 100% sure it is okay to post here, so here it is:-
http://xboxgeek.com/wmvhd.zip
This zip contains the icons/screen shots and a WMVHD banner, as well as the edited gamedb.ini. All you need to do is download the WMV-HD samples from http://www.wmvhd.com and put them in the \videos\wmvhd
The only clip from wmvhd.com that goes in the video folder and not \videos\wmvhd is Robotica_720.wmv. There is no real reason for that, but that is how I did it.
Enjoy....

For those on slower internet connections (1GB or less), and who want to download these big files unmanned overnight, I can recommend using Firefox, along with the Firefox DownThemAll! extension.
Surf to http://www.MS.com/wi...ntShowcase.aspx (replace MS with the full name of the Windows publisher).
Right click on the downloaded page, and choose DownThemAll!... from the context menu.
Just enter a filter of "*_720p.exe" (or simply "*.exe" if you want the 1080p ones as well) - It'll sequentially download all EXEs (SFX archives of the WMVs).
Got mine running. I'm off to bed.
Hopeing to recreate XBoxgeek's X360 WMVHD demo disk tomorrow.

1st post here.. yay
Mostly because, unlike 80% of the forum user base, i don't post useless information about topics i have NO idea on, which seems to be very popular around here lol(not in this thread by the way, this has been VERY helpful).
Anyways my rant is done, here is my question:
Is the Xbox 360 capable of playing the 1080p WMV HD files in true 1080p (my tv is 1080p natively, but supports 720p, 1080i etc)
By the way the only Full Movie that i believe is available in WMV HD at the moment is Terminator 2 (the extreme edition dvd set, 1 dvd contains the movie in regular widescreen while the 2nd dvd has the movie in WMV HD)
I am ordering this movie and will try to transfer it to a kiosk disc image, stripped of everything but the movie folder where i will simply replace one of the old .wmv's with this T2 .wmv. Im guessing i will have to use a DVD9 (dual layer) due to the fact it has to be larger than 4.3 gigs.
If anyone does this before me, please post about your experience!
(Is ripping a WMV HD movie from an actual dvd-rom as simple as transferring the main .wmv(on the dvd-rom) to the pc's harddrive?)

No. The 360 will play 1080p files but not in 1080p.

Nope. T2 has DRM. You will need to strip that first before the 360 will play any of it. Google DRMCreep for an understanding on the DRM process.

Right on. This forum section says hard moderated, but still we get numerous re-posts and basic questions that don't add anything to threads and could be answered by reading FAQs, searching and/or reading other threads.
The very case with your post too.

If 1080i is the highest resolution x360 supports (it's listed in your manual and on every web site), why do you think WMV-HDs would play in 1080p?

This has been tried out in the original kiosk thread. It's been reported that DVD9 discs will play, but no WMV files bigger than 2gb are supported.
Although it could've been some sort of DRM problem as well.
-
theres plent of wmvhd content out there. shit loads converted from hidef TS streams and also a fair few official WMVHD releases from europe, italian job, tombraider, total recall............ editing them in to 2gb junks isnt a problem, but is there a way to play a handfull off wmv files seamlessly of the kiosk disk?
-
The closest you will get is somthing like this-
CODE
[Attract]
InactiveTime=2
Attract0_Video=game:\videos\some_movie_pt01.wmv
Attract1_Video=game:\videos\some_movie_pt02.wmv
Attract2_Video=game:\videos\some_movie_pt03.wmv
Attract3_Video=game:\videos\some_movie_pt04.wmv
Attract4_Video=game:\videos\some_movie_pt05.wmv
That will more or less auto play the attraction file list as soon as the disk boots.

ISO's don't support any file larger then 2gb. I think you'll have to use UDF write mode.
-
I tried 2 x 2GB T2 WMVHD files on disc, with 2 second attract mode and it went in and played the first (didn't watch all the way thru). It was very jerky and out of sync, it was also in the wrong aspect ratio and of course I couldn't change it. As soon as you touch any button on the media remote it goes back to the main menu of the demo.
I tried the same file thru my MCE and 360 and it was fine.

Could this be why MS doesn't support playing WMVHD dvd's?
Perhaps the dvd drive can't keep up with the HD content.

It could, if it would spin the disc at full speed, but then it would be unreasonably noisy and no one would want to watch movies with it
-
Turn the volume up on the movie then! Or, even better, add more fans to the Xbox 360 unit to take your mind off the noise of the DVD drive.

Drive speed isnt a problem.
The drive could easily keep up with even a ts stream at 20Mbps bitrate.
Seing how wmvhd is way below it isnt a problem with the drive speed.
It will basically need to spin at around 1x or 2x.
-
Does anyone know about how the 360 accesses external drives? I presume it goes to hdd0-9, but if anyone has any more details on this it would be much more helpful, as renaming a file to xboxplay.wmv or whatever is much easier (and cheaper) than burning multiple DVDs

Does anyone know about how the 360 accesses external drives? I presume it goes to hdd0-9, but if anyone has any more details on this it would be much more helpful, as renaming a file to xboxplay.wmv or whatever is much easier (and cheaper) than burning multiple DVDs
good idea
it would be great to be able to use the kiosk disc to point to WMVHD's on an external USB 2.0 HDD.
BTW - I burned a WMV greater than 2GB and it appeared to work just fine, although I haven't watched the whole movie through.

Saw these details in another thread:

Drive Names on Development and Retail Consoles (by JSR):
dvd:\ or a:\
--->Root of the DVD drive and the emulated DVD drive.
devkit:\ or e:\
--->Root of the development partition on devkits.
hdd:\
--->Root of the title hierarchy on the retail partition of the hard drive.
mu0:\ and mu1:\
--->Root of user area on memory units. Not available during runtime. Retail memory units will have a minimum capacity of 64MB with 8MB reserved for system use.
game:\ or d:\
--->Root of the game disc or emulated game disk.
cache:\
--->Scratch partition allocated by the system to the game. The cache partition is always stored on the retail hard drive and is not available if the hard drive is not attached. The size of the cache partition available to the title is 2GB.
Tools for injecting files onto the MemPaks now exist. So, although the list above doesn't seem to cover USB drives, we could test the technique using a small WMV on a MemPak. e.g. "Blah=mu0:\myMovie.wmv". "Root of user area on memory units. Not available during runtime." doesn't sound promising, but then the Kiosk disk does program MemPaks itself, so maybe this'll be an exception.

What movie do you have over 2GB? I can't find any movies except the clips from WMVHD.com and DVDs from Amazon.com. The DVDs have DRM enable so I cannot play it on xbox.

Thanks for the info!
I've managed to edit items / screenshots / text on the dashboard but how do you edit the text on the blades? Thanks!

New free tool creates WMV files from DVD's www.dvd-wmv.com
This is the best tool I have used to date.

So, if I put a backup of say PGR 3, in the demos folder, and altered the correct setup ini, would it run on my X360?
Also, does the kiosk only work with not-updated X360's?
Sorry, i'm a bit of a noob at all this

wrong topic, but that doesn't work. it still does a media check on the .xex or .exe (.exe is only for the kiosk disc i think though) and you're running the executable off the wrong media type so it fails.
