Y'know what I'd like? To have emulator menus show the spines from the games' boxes all in a row like a virtual games-shelf. |
In all honesty that'd be a hell of a lot cooler than box art

Why not both? It would be a lot of work though. The roms that Xport's emus use don't have boxart in them like N64 ones.

No rom has box art in it. The box art images are just a ton of png image files added to the skin. The box art is in no way included with the rom

The voting option should have been, Yes- This would be a COOL feature. It is
in no way a valuable feature. With that said, I wouldn't mind having it. I think it
wouldn't be worth Xport's time though.
g
I just take a screen shot of the title screen.
That way i don't have to look at the file name, but the picture.
I'm with Guile. It would be a cool feature, but this is something an end-user could do. Xport has done quite a lot for everyone already. You wouldn't even have to have knowledge of how to code. Just get the images together and distribute them on a website.
for people with full rom sets, that would be a bitch load to get images of all the boxarts
| CODE |
for %%a in (*.png) do md "%%~na" for %%a in (*.png) do move "%%a" "%%~na\0001.png" |
the pics only have to has the same names as the roms.
You can switch beetwen the shots in xports emus.
Change the 0001 to 0002, it depends on how many shots you have per game.

gonkle - fyi, the screenshots no longer have to be named with numbers. They can be called "foo.png", "bar.png", "goofy92kxmnqwe.png". As long as they are all in the same directory, they will all get cycled regardless of what they are named.
Also, people will be hard pressed to get a sizable collection of box-shots for just about any platform excluding N64. It's also quite a sizable task to implement something like this.
Significant effort for something that will hardly be used = not going to be implemented.
Does this qualify as a sizable collection of box-shots for just about any platform?
http://www.screensho...e.com/scans.htm
Although I think implementing them into the emus would be a waste of time. I always set Surreal to display the roms as a regular list because it's easier to read the titles and it looks tidier.

fine thats makes it easier to know if its a shot or title or something else,
i spend some time getting my screenscollection that way i want it to be.
I dont really use i alot, i just love to figure things out.
About the implementaion, i had luck to find nearly all sega and nintendo systems on a not anymore existing website, so i only needed to run this scripts and i had some complete working sets, only problem that when put them on E it slows down game selection, when i put them on a CD it run fine.
Likklebaer - thanks for the link. I'm sure lots of people will find that useful. It's still not worth the effort though.

Agreed, especially when Xports talented effort could go towards a SNES emu with his excellent dash menu, and customizability.

just create with any xport emu an screenshot than you have an folder where you can put your convertet into.
isnt there a freeware tool that converts jpg images png?
I would prefer that it can be used on the command line in windows.
I found 2png.exe but it adds a ugly watermark to the images.
thx

Getting all the boxart shouldn't be to hard if we collaborate it within a topic |
If members of the community volunteered their tome to collect, rename, resize, and standardize all the boxar images, Xport would only have to do minimal programming to impliment it wouldent he?
If that is the case I'm certian we could get a group of very bored people with lots of time on their hands (the kind of people who brouse xs forums and mod their xbox) to get this going.

If xport is willing to implement this (which he already said he wouldn't) I would spend the time with all the boxart for it to be the correct size format and name, and finding the boxart has pretty much all been done
Collection of boxart (thanks Likklebaer)
btw the poll seems to show support for this feature

humm....

I'm assuming he is disagreeing under the stipulation that he has to do the image formatting himself.
This assumption is based off of this quote:
| QUOTE (Xport) |
| Also, people will be hard pressed to get a sizable collection of box-shots for just about any platform excluding N64. |
In this thread a number of people have given examples of substantial resources for finding original boxart, so that is no longer a problem.
After he said that a number of people (including myself) agreed that, if he were to accept the project, we would do all the image resizing, renaming, format processing, all the rest.
Think about it, one group of people would agree to format the A-C game box art images, a different group the D-F, etc.
The idea could take off. In a previous thread (neogensis v16 release) he said he was thinking about a standard format for adding box art/screen shots (mentioned this while we were on the topic of adding genesis collective support to neogenesis). So maybe, *IF* we did the busy work for him, he might be interested?
I'd be more interested in the idea of people resizing/renaming the existing pics for use in the existing emulators. No work on Xport's part, but it would mean work for the people clamoring for it. I'd frankly rather not view the romlists via boxart like Surreal simply because most other systems have many, many more roms and it would become quite cumbersome. Now, viewing the boxart in the screenshot panes, that's another idea...
try batchraptor, you can convert all at once with it.
http://download-tipp...ware/8370.shtml
I hope there i an english version out there.
But beware you i had an massive slowdown while browsing the romlist, when you add many of them on E.
I burned them onto a cd and now it works fast and fine.
Just put the folders like they are on E/screenshots drive onto the cd and change the Screenshots path to r.
My Nero crashed while adding 400Mb of pictures, just create an Xiso from your Folder.
i dotn see why this is so wanted, why dont u just download the boxart packs and use them ase screen shots like sum1 up there said, onyl i dotn no how to do this, can sum1 help me put these files --http://www.screenshotarchive.com/scans.htm#Sega_Genesis
as my screen shots?
cya!
PS. what do i need to resize them all to, or does it matter? and where do i put em (emus are installed in F:)
thnx
But he made it so that you could take a screenshot yourself. Hmmm...I like it just the way it is. To each his own I guess.....
your welcome dr.digital and others.

just follow the steps i wrote, than it will work for you
ps: this damn png are much more bigger than the jpg´s, confussing.

if you have use for it, i changed this little bash: first convert them to png (maybe with acdsee or else) rename the folders from that linked site to box, cartridge, snap and title. So that the png files are in this folders, than run from the mainfolder this batch file(simply save this code to a convert.bat file. After that you only have to delete the 4 folders and move the batch file somewhere else.

there,
I changed it a bit so that there isnt any chaos in the root folder.
Just put them inot the gamenamedir and they will can be cycled with the dpad, i think.

Personally I prefer a screenshot of the title screen, and a few in-game screenshots.
If you really wanted box-art though, why not make it a personal project and then share it with the community? |
I agree. I only have one screenshot for each game though and that is of the title screen. Think about it. In order for Xport to show the boxart just like surreal does, he would have to rewrite the code to change the game select screen which I'm sure would be a bitch for that kind of project but even worse is that he would have to go and find EVERY boxart for EVERY game (NES, Genesis, GBX, the list goes on and on and on and on and on...)
So again, I think A nice manual screenshot of the title is all we need
