Is modding with a chip the only way to mod your 360, or are there other ways to do it like soft mod?

no.  Most people do not install modchips.  Most people prefer to simply reflash the firmware on their drive in order to run backups.  Be advised that modding your 360 will not yield the same results as modding the original xbox.  Chipping the xbox 360 dvd drive or reflashing the dvd firmware will only allow you to play backups.  No homebrew (for the most part) on the 360.
