Firmware. I doubt you'll see some kind of OTHER hack soon, that lets you boot unsigned code for example. MS did a very good job on the 360 itself this time. However, they made a big mistake by forgetting about the firmware They even didn't remove the debug routines from the FW, quite amazing ... The 360 has a little bit more advanced protection in its FW than the original xbox, but still, they did some stupid things (like forgetting about the debug routines, that were very helpful to us, hehe, and most importantly: not signing the firmware). I'm betting they'll develop the MPU in the drive from scratch for their next gen consoles and sign the code in the FW .
1. Yes. However, every patch they come up with can be hacked (very fast) again. So it might become some sort of cat/mouse game ... But the hacker will always win because the hardware is designed in the 'wrong' way for MS to win that game.
2. You'll have to be able to flash you firmware. Currently there's no method to do it via software, so you'll need a hardware programmer. However, it's possible to do it via software, it only has to be researched .
3. Yes and No. Yes, it will work, but the problem is that I highly doubt that the team will release a hacked 'ready to go' firmware ... I think a lot of hackers (including me) are reluctant to do this. The threat from MS and its lawyers is real. Even though it might be legal in some countries, if you visit the US they can arrest you there (like they arrested that Russian guy when he visited the US) ... Well, maybe a text document with bytes differing from original and hacked FW is possible => it's not a 'device' to circumvent copy protection' and it will only serve eductional purposes of course That way only the person that is going to use that information to create such a 'device' (software) is the one that is doing something illegal and not the hacker I suppose ... But again, I'm not a lawyer and it is a VERY slippery slope we're on here ... You'll have to understand that a FW hack differs in 2 ways from what bunnie did:
1. Bunnie could hide behind the fact that his intention was only to boot Linux.
2. Bunnie could hide behind his academic paper he was writing. This was some kind of 'safeguard' for him, since MS would be more reluctant to have an academic researcher arrested (although that russian guy was also an academic researcher, even speaking at a conference the moment they arrested him, hehe).
So, we'll see what happens... At least, there's is very good progress being made and the team is probably going to show soon that it IS possible, hehe... And I suspect sooner or later somebody will probably take his chances and upload a hack something somewhere But again ... I doubt that there'll be anything else than a 'we did it' statement in the beginning ... I think if you're hoping on a ready-to-go firmware hack, others would have to follow in the team's footsteps, that are not as much in the 'limelight' as the hackers on this board.

^You got that right bud. The geniuses at work are going to exploit that to every end you can bet on that.
I cant believe they were so careless LOL. Thanks MS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I cant wait for a chip or somthing to come out , I would love to stream high def videos from my PC , or even run them strait of the HDD on teh 360
this would also open a nice door to repairing the system yourself , with xbox for example , chipping it usually allowed you to have an unlocked HDD , thus meaning if the original HDD fried... easy fix , if you or somebody in your family is known to scratch or destroy games... you can run backups and not worry about buyin that game again
in the wrong hands , there's dozens of DVD-R discs that have games burnt on them , thus ruining modding for the rest of us...
but if chips ONLY allowed homebrew and no commercial backups to be run , I'd still get one
-
Actually I think this would be a good step toward making a modchip. Chipping away at the 360's security is what we are doing and I would assume this is a big chunk.
-
maybe someone will release a modchip that is installed on the dvd drive itself.
such a chip exists for the GC iirc

i think you didn't read the text all that good
He is talking about a firware hack not a modchip
the only thing this will do is make you able to read non mediaflag protected dvds and so simply copied games or how people allso like to call it a "backup" to make it sound less illegal .
I think it's great that this can be done to run me "backups" but it's only a small step of what still needs to be done.
Actually the DVDs still have the mediaflag protection. What the hack does is give the Xbox what it wants, by reading the security details from either another part of the disc or the same part but bypassing some of the other security measures (such as checking the media type, NOT the xex/xbe media flag, the actual pre-recorded type on the DVD)

Right, The 360 goes "Hey, what kind of media is in there?" and the hacked firmware goes, shit shit, lie! "Umm, its a xbox 360 dvd" and the 360 boots it.
Ha!

I cant see how they will benefit from the FW hack as the only thing it will do is play backup games which to most people just means pirated games (obviously there are some genuine people out there that are just using it for backups but I would say the numbers will be low). So they may get more console sales but loseing money on the hardware and less software sales through pirated games so losing money again.
I am not saying that they are not going to make money because they are but I cant see anyway that this hack is going to make them extra money.
Maybe if there was a mod chip that was able to run un-signed code e.g better media center supporting all video formats, emulators and all the other great programs they had for the xbox1 and run games you owned from a bigger HDD then they make more money. As I was one of the people that went out and brought an xbox1 when I saw what you could do with it and still brought all of my favourate games for it so they got one extra hardware sale from me because there was good modchip for it and I still purchased games for it, so they still made money from the software.

does M$ just look out for M$? i dont think they really care about all the games....even the few that are produced at M$ game studios....the loss isnt that big for them....plus...theres nothing that can be done to make hacking IMPOSSIBLE....theres always a way
