Title: Disabling Flicker And Smooth Filter In Games
Post by: Auna on December 04, 2004, 07:26:00 PM
Hi, I don´t know if I´m the only person in the world who really hates the ultrablurry look for some xbox games which uses Xbox´s flicker and smooth filters to the maximum (for example, Wreckless and many others).

I´ve been searching long time for a way to disable by patching the xbe´s itselfs and so, but I didnt have any luck. I even compiled a simple example with filter on and the same one with the filter off , but when I compared both there was lots of differences.

Would be possible to simply patch opcodes with makes xbox turn on those filters using an evox trainer?

I guess in theory every game compiled with a same devkit version should share the same code to set those filters so we could easyly make a patcher, but I didnt any luck yet. Sadly I´ve not enought asm knowledges :(

Anybody want to help?

The Ind-Bios has an option the disable the flicker filter (it is called interlace filter in the config file)...although I don't use 480i that much anymore so I can't confirm that it works 100%...also I would test booting from dvd-drive before any dashboards as certain dashboards set the flicker level themselves and if the bios doesn't re-initialise again when booting the game then you'll get the settings that the dashboard is using rather then the bios.Although that could be useful in itself since the ind-bios option is a simple flicker on/flicker off rather then a level of 0-5(which I would rather as completely off is unbearable in pal50 mode on certain displays)
And I agree, the display looks horrible with full strength flicker filtering...although the xbox has a crappy video output in general because of the use of a pc-based tv out encoder.
