Arcade Demo to Full Conversion for Homebrew 360sPosted by XanTium | December 3 21:51 EST | News Category: Xbox360 |
| |
With freeBOOT v0.02 and XBReboot v0.05 being released opening our retail 360s (with older 2nd bootloader/CB) to run unsigned code, people are starting to experiment stuff. Surazal on our forums found out the difference between a demo and full Xbox Live Arcade game is only a few hex-edit away:
Find a copy of Yaris (this game was chosen as it runs everywhere as full). Open the pirs file in your favorite hex editor (filename was FB9310B8893A3FD01C443A29AC246493393E399558 ) Copy everything from 0x22C to 0x25F inclusive. Shown as selected on this image (guess you don't need to find Yaris if you want to just copy the values highlighted). Open your destination (in my case Castle Crashers filename: F9432A7FE407A3C196C95D0FFD4A540937FD4EEC58) select 0x22C, and paste (overwrite, not insert). File size should NOT change.
Note that this is (probably) illegal if you didn't actually buy the actual Xbox Live Arcade game. But as running a "homebrew enabled" Xbox 360 is not (and probably will never be) safe to connect to LIVE this is way to make your Arcade games you bought play in full version on your homebrew Xbox 360.
2 tools to help you auto-patch arcade games have been released as well: * Arcade Demo to Full Converter (adfc) v0.1 (by FreeXeX) FreeXeX360 :: Arcade Demo to Full Converter v0.1 Usage: freexex360-adfc.exe <LIVE file> * Yaris-Swap v0.02 (by zouzzz) Yaris-Swap use your [Surazal's] tips (for LIVE and PIRS files). If someone can test it.

Next step: DLC

DLC already works with this method, well at least with Yaris-Swap it does.

i wasnt bashing on anybody. Wouldnt it be great if you didnt have to buy some used xbox from some guy you might not even know? Think if you could go to any retailer and get an xbox and know that you can code whatever you wanted. =)

You're absolutely right, that sounds fantastic! Let us all know when you find an exploit for a newer kernel!
Thanks bud!

It basically already been done twice. King Kong exploit and now the JTAG hack.... there just has to be another way.

Yaris-Swap, worked like a charm thanks.

You are very wrong. Both are infact one in the same.
There is just one exploit to date but it had a few different ways someone could make use of it.
All of those avenues are now blocked.

Do you have any idea which is the latest production date that have "old" dash that still can be exploitable with jtag? I am willing to buy a new Xbox-360 but I only can find consoles manufactured in October onwards (or maybe September), anyone know which dash is installed in these consoles? Tkx

You need to get an xbox manufactured before June 2009, because that's when they started appearing with the new bootloader (kernel doesn't matter so much). Also, you probably don't want an arcade from 2009 since they have large block NANDs.
-
I take it this wouldn't work on a banned xbox360 since they still need the stuff to be signed, right? I mean they can never go back online but we still need the stuff to have the right "lock" on the files. I think I made sense.
-
hahaha it's an all out war now. Microsoft overstepped and now they will suffer the wrath. Guaranteed if games were priced right, bannings didn't happen for modding etc. these things wouldn't be taken so far. Now that Microsoft has completely taken a dump on everyone respect has fallen and it's pretty much a free for all. There would really be zero motivation to hack the system if everything was priced right and the features offered were what the community wanted.
-
it's on!!!!!!
M$ must be running around like chickens with their heads chopped off.....
I love it.
-
Okay, it's great that these kind of advancements are coming out in all their glory but dude, this hasn't been happening because of the bans or because M$ pissed of some hackers. The ability to make the 360 do this has been worked on for so long, way before the bans and are motived only by the want and desire to open this sytem up (which by now, it obviously seems it has). All these little hacks and goodies seem to be a nice side effect and should be taken as such. Remember, those with a box from the latest ban can't begin to do step one of this hack... yet. Great job guys!
PS- No offense, just don't wanna see this thread littered with "Ooooh yeah Microsux, you pissed the hackers off, this is what you get! Dig it?!?!?!?"
-
is it work on whole complete game?
or is just work on demo?

Yes, I only worked this out while trying to be able to play my own purchased content on any tag I use on my offline system.
Yes, it does work for DLC as well. Not videos though, so my locked videos are still stuck to the Live box.

Yeah I noticed recently hacks that been released that are starting to show up like the xbox1 did. Emulators are out, now hackes to get your arcade games back. I hope next they open up the xbox to run a media player!

So would this work for a non homebrew console, The part about burning the file to a cd, having it show as a mixed media disc and playing the game from the games library tab got me thinking. About a year ago the Japanese Resident Evil 5 Demo leaked online and was played in much the same way, what would stop you from using these games on any console, hacked or not.

Hopefully with this peep into xbox architecture and security new progress towards new consoles that are actually relevant will come into play.

No, because that demo was still signed. The only reason this method works is because XBR and Freeboot don't require files to be signed. As soon as you edit it, the signature breaks.

I would never encourage someone to do this on games and DLC unless they already purchased the content. I did it merely to be removed of the restriction of having to connect to Live with a 360 I did not want on Live. Its funny, a competing system can let you give them the info for an offline system and the games are still linked to and won't play on any systems but those few that they have allowed. Microsoft on the other hand requires that you be tied to their servers. However, they also want you to not use your hardware in legal manners that they don't approve of if you connect to those servers. That is not exactly reasonable treatment.
Also, this will not work on consoles unless they have had their signature checking disabled (such as by freeboot or xbrebooter). That is where the security itself was bypassed.
Just wanted to make that all abundantly clear.

Yup great stuff

Damn - I wish the latest Kernal could be hacked.
-
All these recent breakthrough are making me very excited. When I heard that they were going to be releasing this hack I went out and bought a spare 360 that is hackable just to do this.
Got a question though, I plugged my LIVE console's hard drive into the other xbox with the exploitable kernal, and as soon as it turned on it asked me to update the console, i realized that it must of saved the summer update on the HDD and told it not to update the console and turned it off right away and took out the hdd. I have yet to do the JTAG hack on the console but I want to make sure that it didnt install the modified bootloader even though i told it not to. Any thoughts?

i think you should be fine, as the bootloader is probably packed inside the file with the rest of the updates.

Yeah Im hoping so, dont know why kind of slimy tricks MS would pull though to stop this hack. Just want to make sure before i got dump 70 bucks on a cygnos to find out my bootloader was updated. I know I could do a nandump and look at the CB value or whatever it is, but my computer doesnt have a LPT port.

With this will we still be able to earn achievements and then take profile to a non modified xbox and have the achievements uploaded?

You're fine, it doesn't update the bootloader unless you say yes. Grab a hdd access tool and delete the update from the hdd if you want to be able to use it on both consoles.

I'm assuming that if you are going to run an exploited 360 its now time to DEFINATELY! remove R6T3 resistor to prevent any sneak attempts by MS trying to blow the fuse so you cant boot into Xell
(and of course the free 8955 dash)

Removal of R6T3 does NOT prevent the CB from being updated. It's this which causes the XeLL to stop functioning.

I thought that the NXE could not run with out that resistor in place.
-
hmmm.
confusing.
http://www.free60.org/R6T3
according to that post, removal of that resistor will prevent any attempts of burning efuses, also, wouldn't the unsigned 8955 not worry about the status of this resistor ? (I'm assuming checks would be removed)
-
Normally it cant, in the freeboot case the NXE currently runs with 'virtual fuses'.

Can someone confirm if you cannot remove R6T3 or Xell will stop functioning the best/only solution is to use ground wire to write protect the nand?
It would suck to get up and running only to be shut down in a drunken mistake at 2am

Removing R6T3 is perfectly fine, and a good idea. It will protect you against accidental updates which would otherwise kill the JTAG exploit.
If you are going to use an xbox for homebrew, then there's no need for any efuses to ever be changed again; the rebooted kernel doesn't care what the real fuses are set to, it's been hacked

the only way its going to get updated is if you fuck up
remove the efuse resistor and that will never happen.

Thanks Torne for the good advice, can I ask you for some more;
So on a recovered banned console it would be advisable only to do the Nand protect, to enable dash upgrade when needed without screwing secdata.
But for exploitable consoles you should do both the Nand AND remove R6T3?
(Of coarse using a toggle switch so nand is not protected all the time)
I just wanna be sure rather than take chances at this

can someone test it on games on demand games? i know they don't have trial option. but if someone buy this and share, can other xbox has XBReboot v0.05 run that game?
if it is posible.
someone can ompare games on demand game with its disc version (Installed to HDD) so maybe with that method all games become like games on demand games and playable without disc

Has anyone tried this on the Xbox installed games on HDD (the one's you rip from game disc)??

That is the whole point of having the hacked 8955. The xbox you do the hack on will never see LIVE ever again.
-

(Of coarse using a toggle switch so nand is not protected all the time)
No, you should *not* write protect the NAND on a box that is connected to Live and gets updated! This is dangerous misinformation I'm afraid. If you leave R6T3 in place but write protect the NAND, then you risk bricking the console: CB updates first blow an efuse, and *then* reflash the NAND, so it will disable your current CB version and then fail to install the new one, leaving you with a box that doesn't boot at all and must be manually recovered by rebuilding a new NAND image for it (this seems to be *very difficult* for current kernels).
There is no sensible way to protect an xbox that keeps connecting to live and updating from being crippled. The best you can do is to take a backup of the NAND to use to uncripple it, and then after each update back up the NAND again. If you get banned, you can use the most recent backup to uncripple the xbox without any messing around with having to find an old copy of secdata.bin, as long as your backup is the same version of the kernel/dash as the one currently on the box.
If you have an exploitable console there is no real need to write protect the NAND, but you can if you want. Removing R6T3 is sufficient to stop updates, because the first thing the update does is try to blow the CB lockdown efuse and if that fails it will stop with an error. Even if something *does* write to the NAND you always have the ability to reflash it from a backup.

Do you have an exploitable 360 running either freeboot or xbrebooter?
If you answered no, then you have found the problem. This does not bypass the security on the 360. The signature and security checks must be bypassed for this to work and that is only done by running a modified kernel such as the ones found in freeboot or xbreboot.

Actually to be able to use those you need to already made the modifications to be able to run XELL using the JTAG hack.

Yes, theoretically, scene groups may start releasing Xbox Arcade games en masse, much like the rampant piracy of PSN minis on PSP and WiiWare games on Wii.
'tis sad

If you mean download via xbox Live first then mod that same console, no, because as soon as you go online to download the demos you would be prompted to update (thereby ruining your ability to JTAG the xbox).
But you could download the demos to an updated xbox, hack them, then put them on your modded console's HDD.

Has anyone else tried Trials HD (patched demo using YarisSwap) on their XBReboot v0.05 8955_1 flashed 360? (Jasper). The game seems to load fine and you can play the very first section with no real issues (maybe a bit choppy) but the game always freezes for me shortly after. The sound usually continues and I can still bring up the guide but the video freezes and I have to go back to the dash or reboot. Anyone else encounter this?, all my other arcade games seem to run fine.

Did you try the newest YarisSwap, v0.3?

im having the same problem choppyness on some arcade games, is this xbreboot related? or the patch did not go well?

I think it's an issue with XBReboot not YarisSwap. I have the same problem with other retail games like L4D2 running off an external HDD. Reading around a bit it seems I'm not the only one. Will just have to wait for future releases of XBR and hope it gets fixed.
-
still early days im sure any issues will have been noticed by now

All the choppyness/black screen issues has nothing to do with yaris-swap. Yaris-swap only "unlocks full game" much like paying for it would. There are a few games known for sure not to work with XBR_8955_1 for now, Contra, Cloning Clyde, Bionic Commando Re Armed, there are mostlikely a bunch more will just crash for now using xbreboot, but Contra is reported working on freeboot. I'm sure the next update to xbr will have plenty fixes.
Here is a list of the XBLA (not dvd releases) games and their content ID. I might have mixed up Watchmen 1 and 2, i didn't verify yet.

Try the other app in the original post (FreeXeX360). I believe YarisSwap is strictly for Arcade Demos.
You could try it, it couldn't hurt.
Other people have said it worked for DLC.

xexload has problems running dlc for rock band etc you need to use the disc and have the lastest rb title update in ur cache folder for the dlc available usual places to work
-
I would have to disagree,
I've managed to get almost all my dlc for rock band / rock band 2 to work in both games , (even from usb drive). If you unlocked (yaris swap) your rb songs, and place them in the correct folder , they will work no problem.
I've done this with single songs , 3 songs packs , they all worked. Only my full album of Pearl Jam Ten doesn't work.
I did not have to get the game updates.
The rb1 game updates , to allow to transfer songs from rb1 to rb2 , will only work if you run a cd , and not if you run from usb drive (this game has been updated to an incompatible version) is what you get from trying the update when the game is on usb drive.
If you yaris-swap the exporter license , then boot rb1 , it will allow you to transfer all songs to hdd , and will then work in both rb1 and rb2

For any RB DLC from Jan 2009 till now, you must have the latest RB title update since they chanced the song encryption to stop the hackers from being able to get the master tracks. The latest title update for RB1/2 will handle the new encryption.

That would explain why my pearl jam ten album won't work? It shows up , but doesn'T preview or load.
Thanx for the info , i will try that later on today.

The encryption was changed due to Xorloser's SongCrypt app which would decrypt the song files and allow you to get the master tracks. He has since refused to release an updated version to handle the new encryption (he already figured it out) due to lawsuit threats by Harmonix. I have already asked him about it and he stopped responding to my emails so don't bother asking.
Once you use a title update from 2009 for each game, your Pearl Jam Ten album should work.

Quick question, is it actually possible to apply title updates to games that have modified xexs, if so how?
I have rb2 on an external usb drive patched with 360gamehack and it runs through xbloader. I've found a copy of the title update 5 and copied it to the cache folder on my hard drive via xplorer360.
However when I relaunch rb2 after all this I can't notice any changes. I still don't seem to have lips mic support which would indicate the patch hasn't applied.
I'm just concerned that the updates may not recognise the modified xex file to patch.
I hope that makes sense
Cheers

Keep in mind that some times the title updates have more than one file. Maybe it is detecting that the xex is longer signed and therefor won't apply the patch.
Here's a quick fix:
You can use xorloser's xextool to apply the patch manually to the rock band 2's default.xex and then patch it with 360gamecheck. This should fix the issue.
-
I've been meaning to patch the game directly as well , and although xextool works fine to patch the .xex , what should i use to patch both .hdr files? I tried renaming them , but xextool detects they are not xex , and won't patch them.
I haven'T tried just with the patched default.xex , as i'm thinking it needs the .hdr files to be patched as well.

Thanks for the reply ccfman, unfortunately not having any luck with patching RB2 there's more files in the update then just a xexp

It seems that we also need Arktool for rock band 2, but xbins seems down for now.

They are adding new servers to deal with the expected increased traffic as they are adding the LT Firmware. That's the message I got when I tried to download something.

whats the method for xexing the title update in arktool?
