Before I proceed with updating my drive, I want to be sure that I've covered my bases.
First thing. I notice from reading the tutorials that I have to revert back to my original fw in order to update to 1.51. I have the latest JungleFlasher tutorial. Under the Hitachi section it has a sub section titled "Restoring from Hacked Firmware." Will I be able to use the instructions in that section to restore my 1.4 firmware to its original fw or is that section only for restoring a drive's fw if you used JungleFlasher to update the fw in the first place?
The second little issue I'm having is my original fw. I got a little careless after updating to 1.4. I didn't label my original FW and save it in numerous places. Now I have the original fw. I'm 98% sure that its the orignal fw because I have only flashed one 78 drive ever. Just to be on the safe side though, is there a way to load that fw in JungleFlasher and check it against the hacked fw on the Xbox currently and compare keys or something to that effect?
I'm also confused with the whole PortIO and Win API thing. In the tutorial section under Hitachi's it says "PortIO functionality was added for VIA 6421 S‐ATA users who removed drivers to hack the Lite‐On drives without freezing issues." So does this mean that if I want to use my VIA card and I DID NOT remove the drivers since I don't have a Lite On drive, then I can still use the Win API mode without issue? Or does this mean that if I have a VIA card installed, I still have to use "VIA Only" mode even if the drivers are still installed
To sum it up, here is what I want to do. Let me know if it is possible. I want to follow the JungleFlasher tutorial and connect my 360 to my PC with a sata cable to my VIA card. At some point take my original fw and place it in JungleFlasher in preparation to restore it. If it is not the original fw for some odd reason, though I'm pretty sure it is, have JungleFlasher prompt me to this fact and then I proceed to finding another orig fw. If everything is all good however, I restore the original FW using the tutorial provided in the JungleFlasher pdf and then proceed to using Win API with my VIA card to flash the new fw.
I hope my thought process is clear and whoever reads this can understand what I'm aiming at doing. If there is a different procedure I should follow in any area, just let me know.
the hardest part of this is you must get jungleflasher working flawlessly with no freezing issues at all ,hitachs dont like via , i would remove via drivers and via sys as the tuts tell you to do and use portio32 driver, have the latest jf with firmware pack installed in the folder firmware, now with the drive connected using portio not winapi and you are able to put into modeb with no freezing at all of the pc then it should be safe to flash.
Because the firmware pack is installed this contains firmwares for all hitachi drives, blank of course so jf will read your hitachi and copy over the relevant sectors to flash it back to stock , so you dont need your original firmware at all, then it will autoload the correct ix1.51 and you will be able to flash it,I cannot stress enough of how important it is to make sure jf is stable you have just got to look around here how many bricked hitachi posts there are.

Thanks. I understand a whole lot better now. One follow up question. From what it sounds like, the VIA and the Hitachi don't play nice. I've been modding the 360's for a couple of years now and I've been out of the loop so I'm trying to catch back up. I still have my VIA and SIL 3112/3512 pci raid cards. I just dont have the SIL installed at the moment. Would it be better for me to just use the SIL card from this point on with the Hitachi and in the future possibly even the Lite-ons? Or is that card not recommended either? If it is not recommended for some reason, how about my on board sata? I have a newer Gigabyte motherboard. Not sure what type of sata hardware the mobo is working with though.
Also, any tips for properly getting rid of the VIA drivers?

the via pci card and the hitachi work fine its the drivers it doesnt like, theres instructions in the jungleflasher guide how to remove them, I have via pci card with via drivers removed with portio driver installed, can flash all drives no problems and using portio can flash all rom versions of hitachi, i would go with the via first thats going to be your best chance of success, the beauty about this set up is the hitachi doesnt even have to show up in windows as long as jf sees it, you will be ok.Not sure about the sil compatiblity tbh, on a side note i was looking for a pcmica card for a laptop setup and was told to keep away from siL look for via chipset.

Ok. That sounds good. I'll remove the drivers and keep the VIA installed.

Everything worked as it should. I removed the drivers following the instructions in JungleFlasher's tutorial and then followed that same tutorial to the letter to restore it back to stock, then flash it to 1.51. The only problem I ran into was with PortIO. For some reason it couldn't install from the exe that came with JF. Instead I had to download it manually and then follow the instructions from this site:
http://www.maximusga...tio_install.php
That got it installed properly and I was able to see PortIO in device manager so I new it was working properly.

well done Shoji glad you got sorted, when you get jungleflasher sorted there is no better application to use and well worth all the effort,if it works with a hitachi then all other drives will work no problems.
