So yeah, I want to flash a 78fk and tried the slax disc on two of my computers. Maybe I got the wrong distro, seems unlikely because I would have gotten it from a tutorial, but it never boots all the way through. Always stops at some error that says something along the lines of "you shouldn't be seeing this error". Now, while I search for a fix on my own, does anyone have a clue why it would be doing this?

when im flashing hitachis i have to make sure my sata settings are correct. (im using my onboard sata ich5). in my bios i have to set 'enhanced mode' on 'sata+pata' to to 'compatible' on 'pata'. not sure what your bios is like but theres got to be similar settings in it. i also unplug any drives which are unnecessary to the flashing process.
if this isnt set up right for me i get a variety of things going wrong...including slax not booting properly, the hitachi not being visible in windows, my boot drive not being visible etc...
