Peeling back these layers is a destructive process, and can be a difficult and time-consuming. It requires a similar chemical-etch and mechanical-polish technique used during fabrication, and the technique has to be precise to sub-micron depths across a relatively large area. Alternative techniques are being developed to solve this problem.

Somebody is bevel polishing. =)  LIttle ittie bitty weights.   Who wants to use some MAE or Chromium etchant. =)

Bunnie is a genious. I wonder how far hacking on the original xbox would have gone without his initial input.
Now its time to wonder.... will he do it again? smile.gif ( i hope so)
so heres to hoping....

^It would have but would have taken a lot longer.  He was/is the best in hardware and thats what had to be observed.  Looks like he's doing it again lol.

I almost think the guy just wanted to give everyone at least a chance before he decided out to pull his guns.

Since nothing other than a cumbersome dvd hack has yet to arise, I guess he said fuck it.

Well, here is best wishes to his hacking efforts. MS put a huge effort into making it a hack proof machine.
I am starting to question how hackable the 360 is being that its been out for 6 months now and we havent heard much besides hackers reporting on how tough it will be to crack.
The Specialist did an amazing job with the dvd firmware.
But when I refer to a hacked xbox360, I mean hacking the core of the 360 OS. God knows what the hacking community can do when/if the security of the XBOX360 OS is breached.
Again...here is hoping for the best.

the wsj article itself is crap, with an emphasis on piracy. it mentions several ways that people have gone about stealing software but doesn't even hint at the other capabilities of a hacked box, such as xboxmediacenter, linux machines, or using it as a conduit between your computer and the living room. it also fails to mention how many of the capabilities of new consoles were ideas and desires of people in the scene, who pulled off many of them much better than MS ever could. it also makes it appear that all distributors and users of hacked consoles are shady teenagers hiding in a basement selling hacked consoles on the blackmarket. bobby white should have done his homework.

its also too bad that huang (bunnie) had to clarify his view on the idea of cracking the box being a competitive venture as the article contradicts itself by mentioning the collaboration over nachos and then suggesting throughout that hackers are vieing to be the first crack it.

otherwise, good luck bunnie and all the other hackers. you guys do the hard work so us endusers can get more out of our machines and have a fun hobby doing it. thx

i can't imagine he's not taking some very good notes on his process, it would be silly to think another book won't eventually come out, i'd be interested in a copy that's for sure smile.gif
