Yes, as I copied my Oblivion last night I noticed that, I put the backup in and made sure it worked (which hummed very softly), then I put the org back in to make sure my orginals still work. As soon as the drive closes "we're ready for takeoff" again. I swear this alone is worth the the hack, I can't stand how loud the originals are anymore after hearing the backups running 1/10 as loud.

If there is less noise it means that the disks are not spinning as fast.
The reason a drive scales down the speed is because of readability issues.
In the long run these burned disks may be harder to read and may be putting a strain on the drive electronics and laser...
Then again... since you are only making backups in case your original gets damaged it is not a problem. Because you wouldn't be running backups constantly..

Seriously though lads, I'd be careful with this one, I know those drives make a fucking racket (and if you think Samsungs are loud, you should check a Hitatchi out), but the fact that every 360 makes those noises off the shelf means that they were obviously meant to do it.
On a related topic though, are 360 drives noisy when running dvd video ? Because if they're not, considering that recordable dl media is designed pretty much for that purpose alone, it could partially explain this.

It's been claimed multiple times a DVD video spins a lot slower then a game disc resulting in a more quiet drive. So maybe the 360 doesn't fully recognize the disc as a gamedisc and doesn't allow the same spin rate which might result in faulty gameplay and/or longer loading times.

Unfortunately, if that is the case, and it would make sense if it was, then these discs will inevitably do the drive in, in the same way that CD rips burn out PS2 lasers, and DC's suffered from constant use of bootable CDRs.
One thing to point out though is that on the one occasion that I used the kiosk disc in my 360, it was anything but fucking quiet, so if this is an issue, then it's an issue that only affects dual layer media.

now that that's out of the way. people quit acting like there is NO firmware for the Hitachi. There was a firmware for the Hitachi before there was ever one for the Samsung. It's just the dood that hacked the Hitachi never released his. I would expect the latter to sound quieter - it's made to different tolerances and yes - it might spin slower - but people are still playing games fine.
How long do you expect the laser to last anyway? The console will be obsolete in 3 years - I'm sure it'll make it till then
If not somebody will cash in on selling 'spare' drives... so overall no big concern...
Why's everybody panicking so much? Can't ever remember this level of hysteria back in the PS1 and PS2 days? The whole world has gone wimpy and whiny!

LOL my sentiments exactly! Hacking/Cracking etc aint kiddies play - if you're worried about your console stick to unmodified firmware and do things by the book!
You can't make an omellete without breaking eggs - yeah in the early days I bricked a couple of PS1's - but made sure PS2 and Xbox were flawless.
Don't get me wrong - I'm not aiming this at you - just saying in general
