Title: Media Check
Post by: _iffy on January 02, 2006, 06:40:00 PM
my understanding is DVDROM reads disc -> media check-> loads xbe

where is the media check? is it software? embedded in a chip?
could a pot tweak make a difference?
how does one deactivate this?

ideas?

the media check is in the xbe/xex, they are easy enough to patch, but doing so invalidates the signature, so the executable will no longer run on a stock xbox/360

the media check flag exists in the xbe or xex file, and as lordvader129 said any modification to that flag will damage the signature of the file. However there may be other ways to get around this, for example a modified firmware for the dvd drive so that when it see's a dvd+r (dl) disc it reports the disc type as factory original silver disc.

Yeah, but that ONLY works for backups whose XEX/XBE files haven't been modified in any way.

Which could then lead to exploits through unsigned supporting files which we can modify.
