Title: Playing Around With Backups
Post by: atomiX on December 06, 2005, 06:07:00 AM
MS isn't stupid enough to let ppl boot backups in the 360 emulator. I highly doubt messing with an image will do anything. Since the xbox copy protection mechanism on the disks wasn't cracked, I think they used the very same in the emulator. There is a special signature on the disc that cannot be burned onto a DVD-R.

It's not that it can't be burned onto the DVD-R. It is in fact burned onto the DVD-R but the signature is only valid for the media MS signed it for. Basically that signature will only let the xbox boot on pressed DVD-9 Media. I'm pretty sure that pressed and burned discs are identifiable and would been different signatures as well. I don't know that one for a fact but I'm sure someone here has burned an xbox game on a dual-layer disc. (I'd be willing to bet that it didn't work)

If you are skeptical, there was a mixer program or something that was signed on cd-r. It could be burned onto a cd and play in any xbox. (Unless you had a thomson tongue.gif)

almost, the digital signature and the media check are two separate levels of security

on a burned 1:1 backup the signature is preserved, but the media check fails
on a burned backup with media checks patched the signature is invalid

the game you are thinking of is Xbox Live Arcade, which has no media check at all, so it can be burned to any media and played on a stock xbox
