Title: Playing Media On A Jtag Console?
Post by: Emphasis on March 26, 2010, 11:04:00 PM
There is little to no documentation on this, that I've been able to find.

I have a jtag'd box, with a 1tb 3.5 sata soldered to the mobo.  I've been able to get games, dlc and arcade content working on it.

How do I play movies, like vob's, avi's, mpg's...etc etc...from the video library or anywhere else?

Or can I, at all? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/uhh.gif)

you need to download the optional media update, google for it.  and you can only play avi/divx/xvid/wmv/hdwmv

you can get the optional media update from any other console/user account and use yaris-swap to unlock to use on any jtag console. as you cant connect your jtag to live (well shouldnt anyway) to download update.

Thanks for this post, I had sort of forgotten about the media update.  However once I needed it on one of my modded consoles I would have had to start searching for it.  Now I have it done so I won't have to worry about it when the time comes now.

Does anyone know where to put this stuff?  I've tried a hdd1//videos folder.  that didn't seem to work.

I don't know about the 360hdd, but I know on an external usb drive, you can put them anywhere, then go to 'media library' and choose 'external drive' and then browse to where your video is.

I am going to test this out now, but I am thinking perhaps putting them in the:

CONTENT\0000000000000000\FFFE07DF\00090000\      folder may work or

/partition3/mindex/media/      where .wma files go

I just tried both of those locations using an assortment of file types and still got nothing showing up.  I'll try and hook up my 120gb HDD that is on my live console that I know has some content in the downloaded videos folder and see if I can find where they are located.

Edit:

Ok I just got a video off my live xbox hdd that was in the CONTENT\0000000000000000\FFFE07DF\00090000\ folder and copied it over to the same spot on my jtag HD and it came up and played just fine.

The issue is finding out what format those videos are in.  The one I used was the Adidas commercial that was promoting FIFA 06.  I tried running it through gspot to see what codec and format it was and it came up unknown.  I opened it in hex edit and it came up with PIRS on the first line.  I am going to look into what I can do with PIRS now and see if we can't come up with a way to convert videos and then upload them to that location and get them to play.

Edit #2:  I just opened that adidas file with a PIRS editor and it just has a default.wmv in it.  Now it's just a matter of seeing if there's a way to create or add files to a PIRS container.

So you just drop the movie file, avi. xvid, etc right into the 00090000 folder?

Nope it doesn't work.  It only comes up if it's contained within a PIRS container which I don't think can be created as of yet.  The Adidas file was just a wmv within the PIRS container located in that folder which plays.

So until we can figure out how to create those containers we are stuck.

Why bother with that when I have a 1tb external Hard drive, soldered to the mobo.  I shouldn't need to bother with a usb hdd....ever.

from the looks of it, it's not possible to put media on hdd1, you'll either have to burn it to disc or put it on a usb drive/thumb drive

Just wait for the people who are working on putting media support into custom dash's or the mplayer port thats being worked on smile.gif I know it sucks but once those are done your jtagged box will be pure win.

I too am waiting for media support. You know XBMC is open source anyone on the scene is allowed to pick it up and port it if they so choose too. It obviously isn't easy or someone would have done it already , my guess is they will do it how they did on the original. It will start as something small and slowly but surely become something original like XBMC , and then it will be replaced as the Dash of choice.
Mplayer would be much better than the stock media player that is for sure , if we just had 3d support and audio support for 360 linux XBMC runs just fine on Linux it is the main dev platform for it.
Just give it some time fellas it won't be much longer before we have something , isn't it still fun even without though? I am just having fun being able to mod games now.

Yea but it barely plays anything , you have to have every file in the exact right format. Mplayer really doesn't care it is much more flexible , which is why XBMC is a good dash for the original xbox.
I was saying it is fun still even though we don;t have XBMC or any kind of homebrew media player yet , and also even though we can't put the video files on the internal HDD without signing them.
I don't have nor do i plan on getting an external USB hardrive i like the one being on top of my 360 , so it would be nice to be able to read the files from wherever we wanted too , and having a homebrew media player would fix that issue. I think one of the dashboards will eventually get video support like freestyle or xexmenu i guess we will see.

No, not problem solved.

I finally got around to trying this.  I know for a fact I've got the optional media update on the xbox hdd correctly.  When I put my USB Flash drive in with an AVI file on it, the drive isn't even recognized in the video library.  It is FAT32 formatted.  I plug it in the front, I'm hoping it doesn't matter which USB slot it goes in.

It seems like it would be really easy to get video files into the right container so they can be saved to the hard drive

i hope someone with a better understanding of this stuff takes on the task soon!

You can use LeFluffie to create PIRS files with content attribute 'VIDEO'. Then it shows up in 'downloadable content' but always throws 'format not supported'. I tried to put mp4 and wmv in the container but they seem to get rejected.

I don't have any official video file to analyze. If someone can provide one feel free to send me a PM.
