Xbox 360 BBC iPlayer launch delayed indefinitely Posted by XanTium | November 28 13:20 EST | News Category: Xbox360 |

From telegraph.co.uk:
According to sources close to the BBC's Future Media and Technology department, a deal between the two parties has still been unable to be reached because Microsoft's strategy of charging for all content on its Xbox Live platform is incompatible with the BBC's public service remit.
"Microsoft only wants to offer its users access to platforms it can charge for as this is the model it is pursuing. It wants to ensure that only those paying for Xbox Live Gold accounts can access its additional content services and even then there is usually a charge on top to get access to those. For example, to access the Sky Player on Xbox, you have to pay for a Gold subscription as well as a Sky subscription," explained one of the sources close to the BBC.
"This does not fit with the BBC's model and Microsoft will not budge at the moment. It is really frustrating for those involved on the BBC side who want to make sure iPlayer is rolled out on as many popular entertainment platforms as possible," they added.

Neither of which I subscribe to or want to invest in. I use BBC iplayer all the time since it's free and convenient (and I already have everything I need to access it). Being able to have BBC iplayer on the 360 would be excellent.Microsoft are stupid not to add it as a dash feature. It'll just end up as another +1 for Sony and PS3.

Just waiting to read M$ lame response to this. Remember this article from Eurogamer/360A a few months ago over DLC being issued for free for L4D.
L4D 1 DLC Pricing Down to MS, Not Valve
"Valve's Chet Faliszek speaks out regarding the L4D 1 DLC pricing issues that have raised concern amongst the 360 community.
Faliszek says, "we own our platform, Steam. Microsoft owns their platform. They wanted to make sure there's an economy of value there."
"Well, they helped us get the first one out for free. We had the one DLC out for free. And I think... they have to look and say, wow, we're kind of being unfair to everybody else if these guys can do that," he continued.
So the reason you're going to be paying for Crash Course this month is entirely down to Microsoft. And why? According to Faliszek, it's so that other publishers that charge on the service don't get a bad wrap because of it. Hardly an ideal system, where Microsoft "punishes" publishers/developers that want to offer free content - in fact, it's the consumer that is punished - but you can see the logic.
Will this have a detrimental effect on upcoming Left 4 Dead 2 360 sales? Well let's be honest, purchasing it on the PC will net you free content as opposed to purchasing it on the 360 where you will have to pay, so it only makes sense."

Why is it Microsoft can get away with charging for mediums you can get on other devices FOR FREE?
What we have here is essentially an awesome device, but we must pay a monthly service charge to unlock features we should get free of charge..
Last FM? Facebook? Twitter? All of these features should be free because they should have included a WEB BROWSER! They could easily tack one on especially since they are the only console company with their own brand of Web browsers! Hell, nowadays 30 dollar cell phones come with them!
And Multiplayer? Xbox Live is the only Non-MMORPG that i can think of that makes you pay to play a game online. rubbish.
Its this kind of Micro$$$oft bull that makes me never want to buy a Microsoft product ever again. I'll NEVER buy Windows 7. Why pay 100-200 Dollars for a product that does absolutely nothing and is essentially a face lift? Anyone else watch those "Windows 7 was my Idea" ads and think "Hey, I can do all those things and more in Windows XP!"
-
They must charge for everything. I think Windows 7 SP1 should include a feature that charges you per download.
-
If MS had their way, they charge you for breathing while playing the xbox. I just can't wait till someone finally hacks the internet system of the xbox so we can set up our own private live system (yeah yeah it will never happen).
MS charge to do anything model will die on there arse because all Sony has to do is keep up what there doing now which is that they offer free content and offer PSN for free and they will win the race, only thing keeping Sony behind is the horrendous development cycle for there system, they desperately need new blood and easier ways to make content for the ps3.

Actually windows 7 rules. True successor to windows xp. But don't let actual real world positive experiences sway your decision, keep hating on something you've never tried (I assume) because you're upset with a completely different division of a company.

Microsoft must be hell bent in ruining all their headway they made in the console market over the past few years.
Sony must be laughing their asses off right about now.

They are just greedy, as the saying goes, you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. All this will come back to bite Microsoft in future sales figures and especially the next gen system. I believe Sony has managed to maintain a decent running this gen due to consumer loyalty, if it had been a brand new system with a band new name it would have utterly crashed and burnt by now. When the next gen console comes I doubt they will make the same mistakes as they did this gen and will be on a much more equal standing to Microsoft. Microsoft however won't have this advantage of consumer loyalty as most of their consumer base feel disgruntled in one way or another; RRoD, Live costs, extortionately priced accessories, extortionately priced live items, Datel situation, bannnings (5% of consumer base), disk scratchings, and so on. It will be interesting to see the consequences in the near future.

+1
And once you've gone Vista/7, go back to XP and realize how limited and outdated it seems. And I don't subscribe to the bad Vista hype, because I have a brain that can problem solve the same way I had to with XP if something came up. Google can solve 90% of the world's problems too.

I bet the spokesmonkey completely ignores any actual issues and goes on to say something about how they're committed to providing quality and value for the customers. You know, the usual spiel they give no matter the topic they're asked about.
-
they charge for everything that other companies do for free to protect the customers from cheaters of course.
-
LOL the 360, and for that matters any MS product, deserves to be hacked because of their money greedy thinking.
In your face MS

QUOTE(The Dude Z @ Nov 28 2009, 11:49 PM)

Yeah dude whatever !
Ive used virtually every OS out there and windows 7 is a facelifted version of Windows Vista.
Which is why all Vista drivers work on Windows 7 Moron.
Because you have used every os doesn't mean you know how they work or was built.
Win7 is not Vista with a facelift it has a lot of the same functions and was also built on nt but so was the past 6 windows so you going to say they are just facelifts no because they are not.
Back to the correct subject it's not only MS being greedy here come on Sky are the worst look at the prices they charge all the BBC are probably saying is xb live gold is a pay service which they wont allow people to pay for that function we already do that in tv licence so open it for silver and it will be on 360 which ms should be ok with but they wont they want to make money of bbc.
-
Ms's way of conducting business
Braid premium theme
"Unfortunately, we had to charge the standard Premium Theme price of 250 Microsoft Points (which is about $3.10 in American money)," confirms the indie developer. "We want to make it free, but Microsoft doesnt like giving things out for free."
-
I get BBC Iplayer free on my HTC Hero and it works flawlessly and so does my mate on his Iphone. Its a mobile phone!!! Why the hell can MS not do this for free too and it would boost the hell out of sales of their console. It would be so sweet having Iplayer on the 360.
-
Ahhh MS... greedy to the very end
-
Cant wait for a good softmod..... to ruin them
then M$ will wish they dident have there thumbs up there ass to begin with.
There causing more problems then good and its starting to target people who respected them once apon a blue moon.
-
Well done to the bbc for not backing down to the greedy microsoft btards
-
Microshite's greed truly knows no bounds.

Another typical response from the people who desperately cling on to the horribly outdated WinNT 5.1 kernel of WinXP.
XP (nt 5.1) is a facelifted version of Win2K(nt 5.0), that's why Win2K drivers work on winXP Moron.
See how dumb & arrogant that looked?
And then I'm not even going to discuss the fact that not all vista drivers work on 7.
Win7 runs on the NT 6.1 kernel, Vista on the 6.0 kernel, there's a difference. Clearly you haven't used "virtually every OS" long enough to see the differences, much less understand them.
Back to the BBC thing: it is a bit of a dick move from MS, even when they have always followed this business model.
Then again, iPlayer is in one country only, the UK. In my eyes, it's the UK's equivalent of hulu.

It seems you are contradicting yourself? You say nt5.1 is a facelift of nt5.0. So why is nt6.1 not a facelift of nt6.0?...

i though this was the topic?
Xbox 360 BBC iPlayer launch delayed indefinitely
I see the off topic battle ....no reason for it though
i do hope m$ gives on this BBC iPlayer..just to show M$ ,it ain't all about them...teamwork is the name..

Let me just say that some years ago i was kind of a MS fan, because of what they actually did for the whole computer world by implementing DirectX, and providing a OS that worked quite well for most people.. This was of course influenced by the fact i worked at that time with MS products

Anyway now i am moving away more and more from MS products as much as i can, and i am also telling those who would like a new computer system that if they can they should go for a Mac, this is also because i will be moving over to a mac the next time i am prepared to upgrade my computers.
Would i have bought a new 360 today, maybe but only! because i like to play around with hacking consoles and so on, but if the 360 was not hackable(same applies to the old XB1 which was only used because of XBMC) and i were to choose between a 360 and a ps3 i would have bought a PS3, just because i am a bit tired of MS products, and always have to pay quite large amounts of money for their products like XB live.
I personally did not jump on the Vista wagon, but i like the look and feel of Win7, although it is like all other windows out there - gets sluggish the more you use it, especially if you are like me and like to test new programs and later uninstall it etc.
-
As a current "american" Sky subscriber, I wonder exactly what BBC iplayer would have to offer compared to the : "Live TV, On Demand Movies, sports, classics, and tons of cool stuff for kids" thats very easy to access in the current Sky player.
I wont go into detail on how to subscribe to Sky from the US, but I will say if you are smart enough to use the net, and want Sky, it's very easy to bypass the UK, and Ireland ONLY restrictions, and not only that, the service stomps netflix, zune, and the video marketplace to shreds. ANYONE using Sky360 will vouch for that. It's basically cable TV on your xbox360.
With that said.. so what if you need gold. Hell if you want anything "premium" on XBL you need to be gold. Games, Netflix, Etc..
So.. I again ask.. wtf does BBC iplayer have to offer over Sky360.

Exactly what I was going to write! Even the Wii has iPlayer (works well, too) and Nintendo charge nothing for it. Microsoft are just being greedy bastards, and the Beeb are having none of it.

BBC is free because its funded by the UK public taxes! Why should Microsoft get profit for something it hasn't created!? What happened to the days where companies were happy to show other content in an effort to attract new and existing customers?
actually its funded by your tv licence
