But, when I boot the box with dvd(iso burned onto dvd) in, the screen is stuck at something like 'Licensed under GPL' and doesnt proceed further... Alternatively, I ran the dvd as 'Game' under xbox media center. This time it ran perfectly and I installed the xebian as 'Game on E partition' (option 1) from ssh.
What you need:
1. Modded Xbox
2. Some media readable by your Xbox
3. EvolutionX installed with access via FTP from your computer
4. USB Keyboard and mouse with a connection to your Xbox (Note that Debian can emulate the Xbox Controller as a mouse and there is an onscreen keyboard in the Debian GUI, but youll need at least a keyboard if you want KDE)
Get Eds Debian 0.3.1 (found at http://xbox-linux.sf.net under downloads). The filename is dist-0.3.1.tar.bz2. Open this file with Winrar (http://www.rarsoft.com), and extract to a folder called C:\Debian (or anything youll remember).
Go to C:\Debian and Extract Boot_fatx_vesa.iso (with Winrar) to C:\Linux, open "linuxboot.cfg" in wordpad, replace 800x600 (in the last line) with 640x480*. NOTE: you only want to extract this ISO file, not any archives within it.
* Apparently it doesnt matter what you do with this line, as long as its not 800x600, delete the line if you want to.
Move the C:\Linux directory (on your PC) over to your Xbox (with Evox installed), I moved it over to F:\Linux. Make a Link in Evox.ini to F:\Linux\default.xbe.
Burn 0.3.1.iso (from C:\Debian) to any media your Xbox can read (I used a DVD+RW), once the burn finishes, boot it up in your Xbox (if it wont boot, flash your BIOS to either X2 4976.02 or Evox D.6, If you get a dirty disc error, refer to HSDEMONZ Ultimate Xbox Burning Tutorial).
NOTE: Do NOT make this ISO file into a GDF image or xISO image, burn it AS IT IS!
Once it boots up, youll have a login screen (GUI), type in root for the username, and xbox for the password. Itll log in to what looks like Windows 3.1 (this is the Debian GUI, not much to look at).
Right-click on the desktop (or press B on your controller) and go to Apps, then Shell, then open Bash.
Type in: XBOXLinuxInstall (everything is cAsE SenSiTive in linux).
Select the first option that pops up (install on game partition), this will install two files onto your E drive, and you'll keep your F drive and save games :).
Answer yes to all questions and after a while, youll get a pop-up box that asks you for an IP address, I recommend using the exact same settings as your working Evox network settings. Once you get a message like Happy Penguin, the installs done.
Type "Reboot", remove the DVD AFTER Linux finishes rebooting and before you get to Evox (The X screen is a good place).
NOW, if you can already access Xbox Live or anything on the internet with your Xbox, you dont really need to do any more network settings. BUT, to use two NICs and a crossover, youll need to enable ICS on the NIC connected to your modem.
Boot Linux through the Evox link you made, log in, right click, apps/shell/bash.
Type "apt-get update"... wait..
If you get a bunch of "localhost" errors, then your internet's not setup right:
Type in "cd /etc/network/" then "nano interfaces" (nano is a text editor and interfaces in your networkcfg file). Edit whatever you need (if you're on a router, change "static" to "dhcp"). And save it (CTRL-O to save and CTRL-X to close).
Now type "ifdown eth0", then "ifup eth0", that restarts your network.
Test your connection by typing "ping -c 4 google.com", if you get "Unknown Host" or the like, then try messing around a bit more in the interfaces file and on your PC (if using ICS) or on your Router control panel.
Repeat from "apt-get update".
Type "apt-get install kdebase".. wait and answer yes to all questions (this takes a long time), once youre back at the prompt, proceed.
Type "apt-get install kdebase" *AGAIN*.. wait and answer questions (installs the few packages that the first install missed).
Type "apt-get install kdm".. Answer yes to any questions.. make KDM your default videoloader (it'll ask you at the beginning and the end, select kdm both times, it is on the bottom first and on the top second I believe)
Type reboot, load linux, select "KDE3" as your "Session type", and login..
Configure KDE (you cant see the Next button, so press enter for the next screen), it'll load and you're done!
If you want to use the onscreen keyboard in KDE, you'll need to login to your xbox (with linux booted) like this:
If you have a favorite SSH App, then you can use that, I am going to detail how to do this PuttY:
Download putty.exe (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html) and open it up, select "SSH" as the protocol and type in 192.168.0.64 as the "Host Name". Press "Open" and login with username "root" and password "xbox".
Type "cd /etc/kde3/kdm/", type "nano Xsetup"
Paste this before the last line "/usr/bin/X11/xvkbd -geometry 480x130 &"
Now save the file (CTRL-O to save and CTRL-X to close).
Now, you need to make a new user before you start messing around (DONT SURF THE WEB AS ROOT!):
Open up Bash or Konsole, or any console program, and type adduser <username> dont type in the <>s. Itll ask some questions. Now logout, and login as whatever user you just made.
If you cant find Bash, click Start(K) then Run then type Bash.
Konquerer is the Web browser for KDE, you can now install whatever you want (Wine, gnome, whatever), But dont ask me, I dont know anything about linux :)
Thats it! If you have any questions (or comments/corrections), feel free to post them here or PM me and Ill try to address them.

Very nice!
Why do you need to do the Boot_fatx_vesa.iso part, when the XboxLinuxInstall command installs the default.xbe file etc on the E: drive and you can boot from that?

Wow, I didn't even notice that. It may be a working Riva bootloader..
I'll check it out.
does this install linux on the E or F drive? how do you select to install on the E drive. I know with Mandrake you type setup8 at installation, but how do you do it with debian?
Ed's .3.1 gives you three install options during the process which are effectively 1: E, 2: F, 3: whole drive (needs cromwell bios).

About that Keyboard EMU, i really am a linux newb. Could someone explain in more detail what you have to do to make it show up? I dont understand which file you have to insert that line into. thanks.

I haven't done it, but this should work:
Go to BASH, type "cd /etc/kde3/kdm/", type "nano Xsetup"
Paste this before the last line "/usr/bin/X11/xvkbd -geometry 480x130 &"
Then save and reboot.
Thanks a lot you guys are bing a HUGE help.
I'm having trouble with the apt-get update part. i type it in, then it says "0% [waiting for file] and it sits there for 30 seconds or so. Sometimes it says 404 directory does not exist on any server [ip: 127.0.0.1 9999]. Sometimes it starts downloading, i assume, cause the 0% goes to 1%, 2% or 6%. Eventually it goes through(it will say "hit" or "ign" followed by a url) a bunch of files and at the end it says some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones were used instead. Are these update servers Busy? Is it possible my internet connection is setup wrong-any way to check this?(IP settings are same as evox and i can connect to xbox live fine and do other networking stuff on my xbox without any problems). thanks.
Go to /etc/apt/sources.list I believe. Delete all the localhost trash and uncommend the https and ftps at the bottom. Save and apt-get update
when i try to access that sources.list file it says Permission Denied
*edit*
Ok, i got into the file, and there are bunch of lines that say dmb followed by a url. All of the urls contain the word localhost except for the five at the very bottom. Do i delete everything except the last five here??

Yes,but see the # infront of the bottom 5? Delete those and it will work.
I was just reading the debian installation tutorial on this site and it said to test your network connection you should type in ping -c 4 google.ca. I did that, it hangs for 10 seconds then says ping: unknown host google.ca. So i'm assuming i have my network settings wrong. But i have my network settings the same as the are in evox, so i dont understand. I'm using a router if that is of any importance. Does linux use a special network port that my router could be blocking? If so, what port is it?

I added this line to the tutorial:
If you get a bunch of "localhost" errors, then your internet's not setup right:
Type in "cd /etc/network/" then "nano interfaces" (nano is a text editor and interfaces in your networkcfg file). Edit whatever you need (Static to DHCP or whatever). And save it,

Repeat from "apt-get update".
Sounds like you need to change the word "Static" in that file to "DHCP".
hmmm... i tried that already and when i tried restarting the network after it said it couldnt read the interfaces file, so i put it back. But i was also thinking that changing the network settings to DHCP could be the answer, but I can't figure out how. Any other suggestions?
Thanks so much!
Np, if anyone else wants to know what to type in there (if it was empty like mine)
its
dhcp
iface eth0 inet dhcp
static
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.1 (varies obviously)
netmask 255.255.255
type man interfaces for more information
also, if you want unstable sources (aka more software, however it is obviously unstable, aka beta and alpha.)
type nano /etc/apt/apt.sources
change the stable to unstable for all of the sources then do an apt-get update.
I also recommend doing an apt-get upgrade to upgrade the applications on your system
To search for a file in your cache
apt-cache search "application name here with no quotes"
apt-cache pkgnames is also useful.
Have fun
A pretty nice and useful utility is Kpackage. It's a nice alternative to APT and can be used right in KDE. If you want a graphical alternative to APT and don't want to use Koffice there is Synaptic and also Aptitude. Synaptic is a graphical interface while Aptitude is a console application. To get Kpackage just type in Bash "apt-get install kpackage"
NOTE: You must have KDE sucussfully installed to install kpackage.
Auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address xxx.xxx.x.xxx
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway x.x.x.x
Just replace the x's with yours and the netmask if needed. Dsn isn't required I believe
If that doesnt work try
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
eth0 dns=xx.x.xx.x
address xxx.xxx.x.xxx
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway x.x.x.x
I have installed Debian 0.3.1, but not the Kde3.1,because no internet connection at home, so is it possible to download the KDE3.1 package somewhere without xbox and then install it to xbox? if possible, please give a How To, thanks.
I've followed all the steps but all I get are monochrome colors.
Actually, it's black, white and red.
The text is clear and the OS appears to be working.
I am using component video with the MS HD AV pack and I've tried both the vesa and riva xbe's
Using the normal composite video pack, I can see colors no problem.
Are any of you seeing this problem?
I can post my /var/log/dmesg if you think that might help diagnose the problem.
what can i doooooo ...
I get this too, it won't go to the log in screen! ANYONE PLEASE HELP!!
YEAAA , the problem was just because i burnt the installation CD as a XISO instead of an normal PC ISO. (nero, 4x, finilize, disc-at-once)
Special thanks to Edgar Hucek who help me on it.
Work great now.

about 6 minutes now....Is this normal??

When i got to bash and type cd/etc/network it does nothing. Says directory doesnt exist. but i found the directory browsing with mplayer.I've tried so many variaitons....Any advice?

Are you using a space between "cd" and "/etc/network/"?
You can also type "nano /etc/network/interfaces" and get there quicker.
Also: I've found that if DHPC is enabled on your router, you won't be able to get internet in Linux (with a static IP) even if it works in Evox or Live.
The solution is to disable DHPC on your router for the IP address being used. OR set linux up as DHPC.
Don't mean to contradict you gain, but I have my router set to give out ip's, and I gave my linux box a static.
My router is set up to give out ip's along the range of 192.168.2.20 to 192.168.2.25, My computer automatically grabs .20 (Since it's always on) and I gave my linux box the static IP of 192.168.2.22 this way they never conflict with each other.
I simply replaced static ip with dhcp in nano and it worked

It might be something stupid I'm doing.. but apparently 4+ people have had the same problem..
I set my router to give IPs from 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.32, my xbox is set as .64 (linux, evox, and live, static), my computer is .5 (static). Windows, Evox, and Live work when DHCP is set from .2 - .254. But Linux WON'T work (with static IP), So I have to drop DHCP down below the Xbox IP level.
May just be different routers..
Probably.

Sort of a strange thing..
Try burning to DVD, and remember, DON'T extract the contents of 0.3.1.ISO for any reason, burn the ISO file directly (in nero: File/Burn Image).
Do NOT make it into a GDF image, xISO file, or anything else like that.
Of course, that may have nothing to do with your problem.

HMM isnt this interesting.. I finally got it to install of the CD. Now I boot to linux and at the first login in debian i do root/xbox
Same thing. It wont let me in and goes to a black screen then a few seconds later comes back to the login. there is no error showing that its the wrong login or anything like when you enter the login/password wrong.
This is getting anoying. I wonder if anyone's getting the same problem
I have done it 15times atleast no luck.
Another 3 reboots about 10 tries each..Nope
seriously this is making me go crazy. I have tried entering it using that virtual keyboard, didnt work either. Remember this time Im running linux off the HD..and not working stil |
I fixed this login problem by reinstalling linux and it worked. Now I can log in no problem.
My next issue is that when I type anything with apt-get I get "bus error" I have done the nano interfaces configuration and since I have a router tried putting in "dhcp" instead of "static", then ifdown and ifup etc..etc. The IP Address in there is correct and so if the Subnet and gateway location. When I ping outside of the LAN it works fine. I can ping any website or even wget a file HTTP
Im not a complete noob at linux, I started from scratch with slackware over 6months ago and I am learning a lot, but still need help with small things like this sometimes.

Check out some of Tiber123's posts (on page 2 I think) concerning the apt.sources
That may help you out.
|
I tried the apt.sources. Actually the file is called sources.list or something I cant remember. Anyways the apt-get command still doesnt work for me it says "Bus Error". I have tried configuring and reconfiguring the "interfaces" using nano. No luck. It is able to access the net fine and work but apt-get DOESNT work. I have tried reinstalling Debian TWICE since the problem and same problem. Whats weird is that apt-get command works fine when debian is booted off the cd, but not once its installed on the hd.
Update: Well again, I seemed to have fixed my own problem. Finally after another few reinstalls of debian I got apt-get to work. There was a few errors installing kde but seems to of worked fine. Im in KDE right now compiling qt libs so I can start installing some software. Once I get away from all the debian distro exclusive stuff like apt-get and dpkg its better for me because Im used to doing things the hard way.
Thanks for everyone's help here. If I have any more problems I will ask here. Gainpresence, thank you for making the tutorial. There is a lot of inconsistencies I have noticed in this debian 0.3.1. Its very buggy. Every time I reinstalled it I would get something different. I reinstall debian and it doesnt to login when booted off the HD (thats a big one for me), it can login fine but apt-get doesnt work ("bus error"), or it actually works. It took me about 10 reinstalls to get My debian installation where it is now. WORKING. Another bug I would like to mention is 3/4 of the time for me after the time where you reboot just after install it hangs at the reboot session. But once you boot off the HD and reboot it seems work fine. Also, I know this has been mentioned, but I want to bring it up again. My HD Pack (Component Cables) only displays a black and white picture. I hope someone fixes this. This debian package is great. Still very buggy in my opinion, but it is great that progress is being made.
I'm an Unix Sysadmin, and I was thinking of throwing debian on my Xbox, but I had a few questions about it:
How does the installer partition the E drive?
Does it completely reformat it to an ext2 or ext3 partition, or does it leave it as the Xbox Fat format?
Does it make the neccesary partitions within the space on the E drive, or does it assume that E is the root directory
and just puts everything in there?
(ex: /var -> 256mb, /usr -> 128mb, or is it just / -> whole E partition? )
Also, if there is any data on the e drive will it erase it?
Does it touch the F: drive at all?

First of all, it doesn't format the drive, unless you want it too. There are three options when installing, install to Game Partition (e:) which will make two files, rootfs ans swap.
The second and third ones format the partition, and use all remaining space.
With the Game partition install, it doesn't touch the f:

Some reason on the login part on debian, my onscreen keyboard doesen't work. It has an 'X' over all the letters and stuff when I go over them. Whats wrong here?
I was just wondering if i could install this on my F: drive? Will it reformat the drive so it will be clean? I don't want to lose anything on my hard drive.
It was all going so well... installed Linux, without a hitch.
Now, when I load it from the hard drive, I get to the login page - I type in the username: root, and the password: xbox
Press return - and it goes to a black screen wanting me to login. No, it isn't a problem with me focusing. It is being typed in...
Any ideas?

I can log into the version of Linux I booted from the CD. When I try to login to the version on my hard drive, it immediately goes to a black screen that says this: ------------------------------------------
Version: XBOX Linux 0.3.1 Hostname: xbox.mshome.net Terminalline: tty1 Linux Ver.: 2.4.20-xbox
xbox.mshome.net login: ------------------------------------------
And that's it. There's a flashing cursor, but I don't have a keyboard so I can't type anything in. (It's a DOS like screen, so the keyboard emu definitely won't work.)
I must be entering in the username and password correctly... I see the username root appear, I press return, the cursor moves to the password field, I type in "xbox" and press enter. (It doesn't show up of course...)
Please help, I'm eager to get this working. |

I was wondering about this myself but then I noticed a readme file as part of the download and it tells exactly what to do. Way different from the 0.3.1 install.
I'm also looking to put Linux on my Xbox, but with Debian 0.4.1 released with not a very clear way to install, I was just going to install 0.3.1 with the existing tut. Shouldn't "apt-get update" take care of updating the version of Debian to 0.4.1 anyway or is this way off base?
ummm... not really. the 0.4.1 has the 2.4.21 kernel. apt-get won't update that for sure... don't suppose anyone wants to help out with my vmware thread?
This was my first linux install on my xbox, so this tut was a lifesaver
I have had the USB adapters forever, just never got around to getting a USB keyboard/mouse for my xbox until tonight. (BTW, I got a jet black usb keyboard/mouse from Office Max for $20. They are Belkin! They are pure black, so they match very nice! I was happy to find them, after trolling compusa for 30 minutes
)
Here are the problems/resolutions that I had.
Hope this helps!
| QUOTE |
(1) - The new installer uses 0.4.1.iso as the boot cd for install.
(2) - I used boot_fatx_e.iso as the files on my e: drive (to launch linux) (The video line mentioned in the tut is not in linuxboot.cfg any longer...)
(3) - The installer boots to a bash prompt. You must "su root" to gain root priveleges before starting the install. The default root password is "xbox". (for the "live" account, the pwd is also "live")
(4) - I am running static IP, so I couldn't resolve hostnames until I added my routers ip address as a nameserver under /etc/resolv.conf (duh!). It never prompted me for a nameserver during install <is it supposed to!> After this I was able to ping yahoo.com, so I knew it was resolving and getting out of the firewall.
(5) - I could not run the "apt-get install kdebase" package installer until I went to /etc/apt/sources.list and deleted all of the localhosts lines in vi. I had to remove the comment from the other lines as well. Next I had to run another "apt-get update". Finally I was able to procede with the kde/kdm install!

I am very happy with the installer package overall! A few minor hickups, but since I work with linux from time to time, it was a breeze to get through! Thanks to the developers and those of you writing these tuts.
why shouldnt you surf the web as a root server?
