Last updated, Jan 22/2010.
Since many people seem to have questions regarding DivX/XviD playback since the December 2007 dash update, I have compiled this FAQ.
Here are some limitations on DivX/XviD playback:
· File Extensions: .avi, .divx
· Containers: AVI
· Video Profiles: MPEG-4 Part 2, Simple & Advanced Simple Profile
· Video Bitrate: 5 Mbps with resolutions of 1280 x 720 at 30fps.
· Audio Profiles: Dolby® Digital 2 channel and 5.1 channel, MP3
· Audio Max Bitrate: No restrictions.

FAQ
Q: How do I enable DivX playback on my 360?
A: You must have the Dec 07 dashboard update (2.0.6683.0) or newer, installed as well as the optional media playback download.
Q: My dashboard is updated, where do I find the optional media update?
A: When you attempt to play a DivX file for the first time, it will tell you that you need to download the support codec. It will automatically take you to the file if you select download now. You can also manually browse through the marketplace to find it, it is under "Game add-ons".
Q: I can find the media download, but it either wont let me download it, I get an error, or I must be online in order to play back my DivX files. Whats the deal?
A: This is a known issue, with a fairly simple work around. Microsoft has bundled this codec with the previous optional codecs, so if you have downloaded it before, it can cause problems. The download is tied to your console as well as your gamertag. Simply download it from another account on the same console, this enables it to be used by any other profile on the same console. If you don't have another profile, just create a new silver account and attempt to play a DivX file while that new account is signed in. You will be prompted to install the update. Once this is done, you no longer need to be logged into LIVE to use the DivX playback. You may delete that silver profile if you want after the codec is installed. The new (as of July '08) DRM licence transfer tool may remove the need to be logged into live to playback xvids as well.
Q: I must be signed in to my profile order to play back my DivX files. Whats the deal?
A: See above.
Q: I have a banned console, how can I get the codec installed?
A: While there are many ways to install the dashboard update on a banned console, there is currently no way to add DivX support in any way other than directly downloading/installing it from LIVE. You may have found a download somewhere on the net that says it is possible to install this manually by placing the files in the required folder on the 360 hdd. This is bogus and does not work, don't waste your time even trying. The codec is DRM locked as explained elsewhere in this FAQ.
Update: If you have a Jtag'd xbox running XBR or Freeboot, you can install/patch the media download to enable divx playback. The files are found @ \Content\0000000000000000\FFFE07DF\00000002\ on partition 3. Unlock these files with YarisSwap 0.3 or other similar tool and you will be able to play divx files again.
Q: That's #$%*&^@! Why can't I just download it from Xbox.com or transfer it from another hard drive?
A: The DivX codec is not free for commercial use, therefore Microsoft has to pay a licensing fee for each unique device that uses it. The only way to keep track of how many consoles require this codec is to tie it to the individual machine. It make sense from a business standpoint to not embed the codec in the dash update, which is why it prompts you to download the first time you you play a Divx file. If only 40% of consoles use this feature, why would MS want to pay the royalty for every machine out there.
If your console was banned from LIVE you have forfeited the right to obtain services from MS, free-to-end-user codecs included. A pain in the ass, maybe, a logical business move by MS, definitely. This will never be downloadable from xbox.com, in the same way that the ipod support (also licensed by MS for a fee per console) is not available for off console downloads.
Here is a quote from MS regarding the Ipod AAC codec.
QUOTE
The codec you download will be unique to your console, it will not accompany you, for instance, if you move your gamer profile to an Xbox 360 Memory Unit to play at a friend's house.
If you're using a friend's Xbox 360 console, Xbox LIVE Marketplace will allow you to download the AAC codec again. But if you've already downloaded it to your own console, the codec will not work on your friend's, as the codec is only valid the first time it's downloaded by a specific gamer profile.
Expect to see a similar FAQ about DivX as they update their site to reflect the new dash update.
Q: After installing the NXE dash, do I need to redownload the "Optional Media Update"?
A: The NXE requires you to redownload the codec, probably because it has been updated in some way.
Or it may be another effort by MS to punish people that are banned.
-You have your console all set up to play divx.
-Your console is banned.
-You had it set up properly, so you can still play divx even offline.
-You update to the NXE offline, either from a future game or hdd swap,' downloaded etc...
-Divx codec gets wiped.
If you value the ability to play Divx on your 360, and your console is banned, DO NOT upgrade to the NXE, or you will lose this ability. There is no workaround. (if you have an exploitable kernel, you can install the Jtag hack/XBR to re-enble this feature.)
Q: I managed to get everything installed, but I burnt some DivX files to a dvd, and I cannot play them. It just says Mixed Media Disc and will not let me select it. What gives?
A: You cannot launch the files from a disc when you are on the Xbox LIVE blade of the dash. You must go to the Media blade, and move down to the video button. From there select current disc, and you should see the files listed in the left hand pane. If using the NXE dash, just go to My Xbox and over to Video Library, or alternatively hit the guide button and move over to the Media blade.
Q: Is it possible to stream these files over a network?
A: Certainly. It can be streamed the same way as other media files, with MediaPlayer 11, Zune software, from Windows Home Server, or almost any UPnP media server (eg: Xbox1 running a current build of XBMC, UPnP/DLNA enabled NAS, UPnP pc server such as Twonkymedia or Tversity etc), or using Windows Media Connect 2. Microsoft has dropped support for Windows Media Connect, but it is still a viable option for streaming from your PC. Although it is not linked on their site any longer you can still download it HERE from MS servers. Samba shares do not work.
Q: You didn't say Windows Media Center, doesn't that work as well?
A: Unfortunately, DivX through MCE is currently not supported on the 360. Even though you have the appropriate codecs installed on your Vista/MCE pc, and you can see the thumbnail image of the video, it will not play. Update: with the public release of Windows 7 Beta, it is reported that VMC will now allow playback of XviD files on the 360 through the media center application.
Q: Other than over the network, how else can I play my movies? Can I play them from the 360 HDD?
A: The 360 will play them from a burned disc (data cd or data dvd), usb thumbdrive, or external usb harddrive (formatted FAT, FAT32, or HFS+)(NTFS formatted drives do not work, imagine that, an MS product that doesn't support their own file system. See MCE question above for more sad irony.) You cannot add them to the 360 harddrive and play them from there.
Q: I am trying to format my large external hdd to FAT32 but my Windows 2000/XP/Vista pc will not allow me to format it in FAT32 if it is bigger than 32 gig or attempts to then throws an error after a long time. Is there another way to format my large drive in FAT32?
A: Here is a handy command line app that works great for formatting within windows. Does the deed in seconds.
Q: I have managed to get it all working, and have watched a bunch of my videos but some of the older DivX files that I have encoded do not work. What exactly does the 360 support for DivX files?
A: The optional media support is actually for Mpeg-4 part 2 Simple and Advanced Simple Profile, the DivX file must be encoded with version 5.0 or higher as earlier versions were not based on this encoding profile.
Q: Some of my videos are subtitled with a separate .SRT, .SUB/IDX or .SSA file, but when I play them, the subs do not display. Aside from learning a foreign language, how can I tell what people are saying?
A: The 360 will not display the subtitles unless they are hard coded into the avi. There are applications available that will merge your subs with your video. AVI ReComp will add hard subs for you.
Q: How do I check my video files before hand to know if they will work or not?
A: A simple freeware application, that you can use to check your video files, is called "GSpot"
Q: Is there a simple way to convert my noncompliant divx files so that they will work on the 360?
A: AVI ReComp works great for this, and is very simple to use. This may take some time depending on the speed of your computer.
Q: Is there a max file size restriction, like there is on the PS3, of 2GB?
A: The maximum file size for an AVI, MPEG-4 Part 2, and H.264 file that can be played is 4 GB. 4GB is also the maximum size of any single file that you can store on a FAT32 USB hard drive. However, Windows Media Player 11 and the Zune software do support streaming WMV files greater than 4GB.
Q: When playing a vid with AC3 audio, the video seems to skip occasionally. How do I fix that?
A: This issue is being investigated in this thread. Check for details.
Q:How can I add thumbnails to individual avi's, cover art etc.. or screen grabs from the avi itself? All I see on the right hand pane is that faded film strip... and i know i've seen an image there before.......
A: Thumbs are only displayed when the media is being served/streamed by WMP11, the Zune software, or in Media Center. You do not get the thumbnail view if the media is on USB or streamed from a UPnP server like Windows Home Server. If you place a .jpg image with the same name as the video file, in the same folder, you can display a thumb over usb.
Q: This all seems like a real pain in the ass. My original Xbox plays any file I have through XBMC.
A: Then keep using your original Xbox as a media center. If you want to run XBMC on your 360, then quit whining about it and help the scene with fully cracking the 360.
Feel free to drop suggestions for additions to this FAQ, and I will update accordingly.

Anyone else notice that the codec is broken for HD divx/xvid with AC3 audio? You might want to add that to the FAQ as the only work around found is to replace the AC3 with MP3 audio. The movie with an AC3 soundtrack will studder every 5-10 minutes and it is very annoying but by ripping the AC3 out and replacing it with an MP3 soundtrack fixes it. I have submitted the issue to MS.

In regards to the file size "restriction", you can play any size AVI file from a mac formatted USB Drive.
If you're running windows you can run Macdrive to format the USB drive mac style and voila there is no 4GB restriction, 10Gig WMVs or 10Gig AVIs work great. (As long as you're using 2ch Stereo in the AVIs, due to the aforementioned bug with AC3 5.1ch).
If you're running Linux you can format it HFS+ directly and copy over whatever you'd like to play. :-) Works like a champ. Though the irony of using a a Mac formatted drive on a Microsoft Xbox 360 isn't lost on me :-)

I just wanted to make this clear but Avi Divx Xvid can be played thru WMP11 and Zune Software? Because when I go to the Zune website it says it doesnt support them to be streamed or on the software and I can't find anything for WMP.

They can be streamed from WMP or Zune. If you want to play them using that software , you will need to install the codecs on your pc. Google ffdshow or klite.

Thanks for the informative post. I had a problem playing my avi files and followed your advice. It worked like a charm except that the sound on the new avi file I created using AVI ReComp lags behind the video. Anyone else experience this? I'm gonna keep looking to find a solution to this problem, but if anyone else has already solved it, I'd greatly appreciate the help! Thanks.

You can try making sure the audio stream is set to CBR (constant bitrate).
AviRecomp/Xbox 360 seem to prefer this setup.
-In AviRecomp open your original file that did not play in the 360.
-Set your output file parameters (path and name)
-Click the "additions" tab
-Under audio , click audio conversions
-Select "convert audio streams", then select CBR and hit "use"
-Add it to the queue and see what happens.
Otherwise you can adjust your audio sync on you output file afterwords with AviMux. (This only works if it is constantly out of sync the whole time by a fixed amount.)

This will not work, as stated in the FAQ.
But feel free to try if you dont believe me. BTW this will not harm your friends console.

I have heard that the new update tomorrow will either offer new codec/methods of play or remove some. Has anyone found any info on any codec updates. And I wonder if they may have fixed the Xvid 2Gig 5.1 sounds studdering issue. fingures crossed cause WMV codecs suck! And obviously MS realizes this cause they have now added xvid/divx to Windows 7! :-)
-
So far for me, with the NXE dash, I have been having issues with xvids completely locking up the box, that used to play fine before the update.... we will see what kind of issues arrive when more people get the dash update.
-
ok, so i've got a question, i have two xboxes and two xbox live gold accounts. one xbox is banned, but the optional media update had already been downloaded, but the license was transferred to the other xbox, so basically my question is if i transfer the second account's licenses to the banned xbox will it be able to play divx w/o having to redownload the file, since it's already been downloaded?
This post has been edited by jbaruch76: Nov 23 2008, 01:32 AM
-
Any license transfer requires a redownload to authenticate. Since you cannot connect to live, this will not be possible.
-
what are the chances of the hackers being able to provide this file for download for people like me who have a ban and are stuck with the old dashboard ?
-
Nil, unless you can invent a re-signer app.
-
So has this divx/xvid media update problem affected everyone after the update or are they just affecting previously banned people?
-
If you are able to connect to LIVE to download the optional media update, there is no problem.
-
Mine didn't work that way
i updated my codecs the day NXE came out but it still told me to sign into live when i was signed out to play divx/xvid

The drm license still needs to be properly assigned, even with the NXE.

i have dual audio divx movies. i can hear only the first stream not the second one.
is there a way to hear second stream?

I dont believe that you can switch audio tracks in an avi on the 360. It just plays the default track. You can change the default track using AVI MUX Gui.

I'm trying to hard code subs onto a movie using AviRecomp but it keeps giving me an error saying "this file has invalid format" when i try to load the sub file. I tried with a couple different movies and got the same result. i'm using the sub files that were included with the movie i downloaded. Any suggestions?
-
AviRecomp only supports .txt, .sub, .srt, .ass, .ssa subtitle files.
If your sub file is in a different format, you can use Subresync to change their format. Subresync is included with Vobsub which you may already have installed on your computer, as it usually is included with various codec packs/video utilities.
If your sub file is already one of the supported formats, there may be something non-standard about it so just opening it with Subresync and then re-saving it should repair any inconsistencies.

I recently started having problems with my DIVX playback and I'm looking for advice.
Now, I had my PC set up perfectly with my 360. I had my XBOX as a Windows Media Extender and I could stream movies from my PC to my xbox whenever I wanted. It would play DVX no problem and in the past few weeks I've been watching DIVX versions of Futuirama and Start Trek so I know DIVX used to play.
My computer started behaving erratically in the last few months. On Friday I reformatted my PC and reinstalled Vista. However, ever since this point, I've struggled with getting it to work with my XBOX.
The first problem I had was getting my xbox to work as a media extender. It was intermittent. It turns out that nthe problem, and the othe rproblems I was having with my PC, was due to Zona Alrm. Ever since SP1, there have been problems with ZA that affect Vista Systems like Windows Update and Windows Media Center. It took me the weekend to track that down as the cause of my problems, and now I just took ZA off my PC, and it's fixed.
However, I have a new problem and it's driving me nuts.
MY WME is setup for the XBOX. I can stream regular videos but it doesn't recognize the DIVX codec. If I try to play futurama, I just get the Blue Screen of Death on my Xbox stating that the codec is not recognized. I have no idea how reinstalling my WME affected the codecs in the xbox. But they're busted. So I guess they need to be reinstalled.
I tried three times to download the Optional Media Update from Marketplace. No good. So thats when I started searchign the net and found this forum.
I've attempted the following fix.
"Microsoft has bundled this codec with the previous optional codecs, so if you have downloaded it before, it can cause problems. The download is tied to your console as well as your gamertag. Simply download it from another account on the same console, this enables it to be used by any other profile on the same console. If you don't have another profile, just create a new silver account and attempt to play a DivX file while that new account is signed in. You will be prompted to install the update. Once this is done, you no longer need to be logged into LIVE to use the DivX playback."
So I created a new silver account called "Divx Fix Test." Then through that account I tried to play my DVIX files streamed from my PC. Again, no good. I tried downloading the update through Marketplace. again no good. I know that when you first play the file, there's supposed to be a pop-up saying that you need to do the update to have the codecs installed. But I can't get the darn thing to pop up. I'm at my wits end about this. It's just a terrible system.
So I'm looking for advice. For example, instead of streaming, do I have to directly try to read a divx file from a USB or hard drive to get the pop-up? When I originally got divx working a year ago, I did not need to do that. When I first tried to stream a divx file from my pc, I got the pop-up saying that I needed the update. I don't know how using a usb might be different, but I'll try that tonight after work.
Can you tell me a little more about the license removal tool? How does it work if I'm not transferring anything? I don't want to screw up my account and the hundreds of downloads I've made over the past year. Because it's not like I have a new xbox or hard drive.
Anyway, I guess I'm looking for further advice. Because I used my xboox to stream a lot of movies and video to my 42" tv. It was a big part of my use. And if I can't do that anymore it'll feel like my xbox is crippled.
-
Sucess, I fixed it.
No, I stillc na't get videos to play in the Windows Media center on my Xbox. But that may be a WMC problem. I forgot a step on my network. I had to click my xbox and allow it to do media sharing in my network.
Suddenly, the pc started showing up in the y videos and my pictures,. When i play video from that, divx works. It also works from a USb drive. But I guess divx support isn't in WMC or mine has an issue because it wont work from theer.
I did a coupel crappy videos and I may put 'em on youtube later.
-
Yes, divx through MCE is not supported, however the beta of Windows 7, and presumably the final version, supports divx in the media center extender.

I currently use WMP11/Vista with my Xbox 360 and watching movies through dashboard (not extender). Basically, moves are shared through WMP11. Is there a way to put movie covert art (I know how to do it for music) in WMP11 so then Xbox 360 can show them?

There is no queueing feature to speak of, at least not for movies. It's a joke.
You could easily join the two avi files using VirtualDubMod though. Load 'movie_part1.avi' into VDub and if it asks to rewrite the header, answer 'No'. Then go to 'File' and 'Append segment' and choose 'movie_part2.avi'. Then go to 'File' and 'Save As'. Choose a name/destination for your joined movie, and then down at the bottom of the box change the 'Video Mode' to 'Direct Stream Copy', then 'Save'. It should only take a minute or two to join the two parts into one seamless avi.

Not sure what i did because i tested this prior to moving overseas (to a country with no xbox live)...divx would previously play without being online. I just tested this now from and it says i need to connect to live (which i cant). Anything i can do remotely? I strangely notice that my updates like the bikes pack on Burnout Paradise is missing too (related?)
I installed the NXE and made sure to upgrade the divx add on prior to leaving. What a bite in the a**
-
After the NXE update you may need to do the silver account trick again, even if you were able to play divx offline prior to the NXE. Simply re-updating the optional media download, doesn't maintain your offline playability. You will have to find a way to connect to xbox live to repair this.
-
Still no news on the NXE Divx front? Im so hoping one genius mind somewhere will find a workaround...
I had been banned for a long time and totally forgot about NXE and so i updated my console with the update, not knowing that the divx functionality would vanish. And streaming to my xbox pretty much summed up my xbox360 usage lately. MAJOR bummer!

Until you can resign content, this will likely never happen.

I guess there still is no workaround for the divx codec or way to revert back to the old dashboard right?

I did away with the hassle of the WMP and extender stuff ages ago. Since I only watch my avi files on my xbox, I run them with the TVersity program. It works everything on the fly and smoothly. And the best part is its free, lol.

instead of going threw the trouble of creating a silver account you could just try Transfer Content Licenses to a New Console. its a tool from M$

The file does't actually get erased, the new dash just requires a higher "revision" of the same file, so restoring an old one will not help.

what file number or location number is the media update in on the hardisk. i have xbr on my 360 would like to see if it will work now

After being in a depressed dryspell of not being able to use the 360 as a media center, I soon realized I could simply transcode divx/avi to the 360 with TVersity. Due to no Xbox Live from a banhammer. LOL am I a nimrod.. or what? ha. Good as new almost.

Hi,
Is it still possible to install the DivX plugin (via Live) with a modified console? This assumes it doesn't get banned doing so
Thanks

Files dosnt YarisSwapped.
Hey,
I have a jtagged console running 8955_3b and I used XBLA Unlocker to unlock the files and then copied the FFFE07DF directory into 0000000000000000. However, when I try to play a Divx it still says I need the media update.
I know the Divx file should work as I could play it on a different xbox 360.
Did I do something wrong, do I need to be signed into a profile or something?
I noticed in a readme.txt in that package you linked, it mentioned needing dashboard version 6683, is this the case?

Files dosnt YarisSwapped. = Files are not YarisSwapped, meaning you need to run them through YarisSwap before copying them to you 360.
Turns out my problem was crappy divx files. When I downloaded some new ones to test, all was well

Sorry about that, I had written in the FAQ that XBLA Unlocker would enable those files, it appears to but they still do not work. Use YarisSwap 0.3, it definitely works.

Thanks so much for posting how to do this it works great for me...since my first 360 rrod that file would never work for me with my hd on another 360 offline i hate that this allows me to watch vids again offline yay!

Want to get this straight. I need to install the optional update so I can stream media. Never signed up for live but somehow I did signup on xbox.com so now I can't use my gamertag to signup for live and will need to create another.
Question here is my goal is to be able to stream media while offline from live. If I create a new gamertag and sign up for live silver and use that account to stream media to install the optional media update. Then delete that gamertag from the xbox, will it still retain that update so I can use my regular profile to stream media?
Sorry for the confusing question.

Ok so hopefully this will be an easy question,
I wanted to play video from a USB on one of my xbox360s, that i dont use on live.
I ran a cable, signed in with a gamertag that has a silver account.
Played the file.
Tried it again tonight and asked me again to connect to live for the update, but I used my other gamertag/login.
Tried the silver account gamertag and again it ask me connect to live.
Do I have to connect everytime or use the same log in, what am i doing wrong?

That is correct.

Delete the optional media update first and start over with a fresh gamertag, that should fix your issue.
