The Xbox 360 supports DivX and XviD as of today, which may make some of you with big file collections (like us) as giddy as a kid in store with puppies made of candy. We threw our entire collection of movies, TV shows and random clips at it and found that the 360 can play back pretty much anything. Here are some notes.

You can play files off of a CD/DVD. This feature wasn't listed on the Xbox Team's website as one of the supported locations for playing back content, but this is fantastic for homes that have wireless networks (or no network at all). In fact, reading off a disc is probably the best way to ensure your movie won't cut out in the middle due to network congestion (unlikely) or someone turning off the computer accidentally (fairly likely).

It supports almost all files. It played back all TV shows we threw at it, including My Name is Earl, 30 Rock, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Battlestar Galactica, and The Venture Bros.. Most of these, and most TV downloaded TV shows, are encoded in XviD format. As for DivX, that's supported back to version 5.0.

AC3 Audio is supported. Nice! AC3 support was added in the Spring Update, but it's nice to see it working with DivX/XviD. 5.1 is supported!

It's not entirely perfect. It's 90% of the way there, improved handling of different video dimensions, better playback controls and Windows Media Center Extender support will make this the perfect DivX/Xvid implementation.

This is really what's needed. Seems kinda dumb that they didn't add it.  dry.gif

I've just tested it with my some old dvd-r's (UDF format) with a couple of avi's(DIvX) that I wrote for XBMC on my xbox, works perfectly, very impressed and very happy!  Next step : dump all 50 multifilm-dvd's onto a USB external HD!

What? I thought there is only stereo supported in divx/xvid?   unsure.gif

Can any other source confirm 5.1?  love.gif

Maybe I mix that up with h264?

So there is no easy mkv encoding with 5.1...

just plug in a HD from an upgraded unit and boot up with it? through I don't think will be able to get xvid to work, due to needing the optional media support download to play them back, which is console serial linked.

Too bad no x264, but this is the best update ever for the 360.

What strikes me ass odd is that I've attached a network HDD
and while it appears as another computer in the network while
browsing from the 360, I can only enter the first level of
subdirectories! No further..

So I navigate to the "Videos" subdir from which I would normally
select "anime" and then "One Piece" for example. The "Videos"
in the root of the drive shows up but when entering that dir I get
a "No Videos found" message from the 360..
Same with pictures and music by the way..

Any idea what I'm doing wrong or if this is just a limitation on
the 360's part?

Kind regards, Gouki

I just finally got it to work, you have to go to where you would select the option from where, in your video tab is,then select the disk then play easy as that.

waited till 5am to d/l the update and since then been trying to throw my whole collection @ it.  All types of DVD+/-r DVD+/-RW CD-R CD-RW and everything from 2004+ that was released works perfect.  I dont know how everyone has weird problems with it sometimes..  watching Tin Man right now and looks amazing..

side not: tried some Telesync files and granted they look good only thing it needs is a video settings adjuster like in XBMC for brightness and stuff.. but like Gizmondo said i agree with defintley about 90% right and by far the best update to 360 date

yeah there is... stick the disc in and goto "media blade" > "videos" section and then select "change video source" and then select the dvd-rom drive and thats that it works... it made me download about a 2-3MB additional update before it could play the XviD movies i have.

i agree here i noticed this to wink.gif ... XBMC cant play discs at all that are burned in UDF ONLY format. (but they know this but for some reason wont change it... something to do with standard dvd playback conflicting i think)

although it generally aint a real problem since most xvid files are generally 700MB or 1400MB (it's still less than 2GB limit) you can just burn the disc with IMGBurn with the "ISO9660 + Joliet + UDF" and they play fine on XBMC.

----------------------

it's great theres finally divx/xvid support ... but the real goldmine would be x264 (.mkv) support as thats the "real" advantage (cause of CPU limitations on xbox1) there since xbox1 can do divx/xvid already and does it overall better still even though the xbox360 divx/xvid support seems pretty good from my early testing... main reason i dont think i could use xbox360 over the original xbox1 with XBMC is since i put the Nyko Intercooler EX on my 360 it's noise level went up fairly high and watching movies with that noise level is sorta 50/50 lol

This is by far and away the most useful update MS have given us, I'm currently watching an xvid file from an old DVDR and its running perfectly, although the 360 is upscaling it to 1080i for some reason.

I think whats even more amazing is that MS gave us this as an early Christmas gift and didn't make us pay for it, which they could have done and most of us including me probably would have paid.

It does support CBR audio. I have confirmed it. You video is most likely an older version of Divx, I have several movies encoded with Divx 3 and none of them work, whereas all of the ones I did with Divx 5 or newer play just fine.

Has anyone been able to make it work through a networked hard drive?  I have drives mapped to my Vista machine and even though I can add the videos to the Media Player 11 library I can't see them on my 360.  All I see are video files on the c drive although still some show some don't not sure why.  Also does anyone have a problem with the volume being rather low?

well its definitely media ceter not supporting the update for some odd reason (lazy move on M$'s part) so the main thing to do for now is have media player 11/zune for divx/xvid.

All you have to do is open WMP11 and click the arrow under library and click add to library. Then manually add the folder you want to share. It can take awhile. It took my system a little bit of time since I have a massive collection of movies.

btw: I'm not sure if it helped but when I was trying to figure out how to do it also. I went to the folder I wanted to add and clicked properties and enabled sharing.?

hope it works.

Exactly the same problem for me with vga

Component works fine
S-Video Fine
Scart Fine

640x480 works on vga

1360x768 = crash and burn

Oh the ones that seem to do it are 25fps (pal me thinks)

here's how to fix that problem but you need component cables
When trying to play 25 or 50 fps content, I don’t get any video over VGA

This only affects consoles which output PAL-50 and PAL-60 output modes. There is a known issue in which 25 or 50 fps video sometimes doesn’t display over a VGA connection if you have previously connected your Xbox over component video output.

The workaround for this issue is as follows:

1.       Connect your Xbox 360 to a display device using a component video cable

2.       Go to the System Blade

3.       Go to Console Settings

4.       Go to Display

5.       Set your display settings to a different resolution than is currently selected (e.g., set it to 480p if your current setting is 720p)

6.       You should see a slider with the words “Your display settings have changed. You can keep this setting or try another. Do you want to keep the new settings? If you keep the new settings, your TV will be tested to see if it also supports this setting at 50Hz.” Answer “Yes, keep these settings” to this prompt.

7.       After this your display will be tested for 50Hz output

8.       You should see a slider with the words “Now displaying at 50Hz. Does this display appear correctly?”  Answer  “No” to this prompt even if the display is correct. Again, make sure to answer “No” to this prompt.

9.       Connect your Xbox up via VGA again. The videos should now play correctly.
and no it does not mean you are setting you 360 to 50hz

sweet
where did you get this info from

If this does work it should be posted in on the main page

its sort of like the this game only supports 60hrz bug in games like topspin 2
when you are useing vga and have to connect up a composite cable to set that ports inputs to 60hrz only

For those still wondering...

X264 does NOT work.
.mkv does not pick up as a playable file type.
renaming to .mp4 does not work either.

Maybe there is another way...but i havent been able to do it

Media files in .mkv container are not supported in this update. Only divx/xvid in .avi container are playable.
You have to convert  .mkv to .mp4 for the 360 to play.
This update is kinda late to me. Watching 480p-< upconvert on big screen is not very enjoyable.

Still Needs
ogg and mkv support
options for choosing subtitle and audio stream for files with multiple streams
screen resizing for overscan

I watch tons of anime and need to be able to choose japanese audio with english subs without the subs being cut off.

Well mine played for a little while. Now the list of videos either doesn't show up or when it does show up I get an status code: 53-CO0DF238 error after I try to get a movie to play. Telling me to make sure my pc is turned on and connected to the network etc etc. Which it is turned on and connected. It worked before and I didn't mess with any settings.

Does anybody else get this error?

5.1 audio embedded in xvid movie files is working just fine for me.  I'm streaming content across my network.

I have tried this now and it works a treat cheers rdeal
BTW i tried composite cable first to save going upstairs and setting that to 60hrz
it doesnt work, has to be a component cable

QUOTE(rdeal @ Dec 5 2007, 04:54 AM) *

here's how to fix that problem but you need component cables

Have three H.264/MPEG-4 AVC , Codec avc1; in .mp4 containers, all with same spec according to GSpot:

isom: MP4  Base Media v1 [IS0 14496-12:2003]
- avc1: MP4 Base w/ AVC ext [ISO 14496-12:2005]
Recommended Display Size: 704 x 396

except this:

Audio
1. mp4a: MPEG-2 AAC LC 24000Hz  76 kb/s tot , stereo  <--- Doesn't Play
2. mp4a: MPEG-4 AAC LC 48000Hz  138 kb/s tot , stereo   <--- Plays
3. mp4a: MPEG-4 AAC LC 48000Hz  142 kb/s tot , stereo <--- Doesn't Play

Could someone explain? I can play every video on my pc, so it's not a problem with files..
I can see the difference in 1 and 2.. but 2 and 3.. if xbox plays the 2nd file.. it should play the 3rd.

Message from xbox:
Can't play this content because it may not be supported.... Status Code: 69-C00D002F

I have 2x PAL 360's, one is on an old 24" widescreen non HDTV connected up by RGB Scart, the other is on a 42" Panasonic Plasma hooked up by VGA.
I was looking forward to the dash update as I use Divx a lot for TV shows.
My format of choice is .hr.ac3.5.1 Divx, so I was keen to try it. Afterdownloading an additional file, which I presume was just a codec, I did get a test TV show in .hr to play, but strangely it was in a window roughly half the size of the screen. I tried the aspect ratio settings etc, but the picture just changed within the box in the middle of the screen, and I could not figure out how to stretch it to fill the screen.
Ive not yet tried it on the other TV, but Im guessing it will be the same.
So I'm rather dissapointed by this update.

Now if I can get some decent homebrew I might have to lay the original Xbox to rest. wink.gif

It would be nice if they allowed some kind of partition to allow you to put your own movies on the HDD, cause without demos and VMP I wouldn't use my 120GB HDD. I haven't even used Divx on the 360 yet, to much faffing about when on my Xbox 1 it goes straight on the HDD. At least when I get my PS3 at Xmas I can use PS3Linux to play some good stuff.

im requesting this advice having already tried what im about to ask and have searched around to no avail; ive read in faqs that the xbox 360 should support divx files on portable devices plugged into its usb port but the ipod maybe isnt one of the supported portable devices as far as divx vid files go.

microsofts release notes for the new update mention much firmer support for ipods (not necessarily iphones or itouches) and added divx playability.  my question is: has anybody been able to put divx vid files onto an ipod and stream them from the xbox360?  if so, how?

i understand that the ipod can stream music and photos from its library on the xbox360 but have failed trying to stream divx files placed either in a folder on the root of the ipod or just in the root.  they are avi's encoded with divx/xvid btw.  i guess i might be doing something wrong but cant seem to figure it out myself since im coming here for advice.

I think that ipods are not recognised as storage devices by X360, you can access only "iTunes content"

Very nice update, but since it wont play RAR files it's worthless to me.

Long live XBMC!

Edit: Then again, I can always extract and play via USB stick which saves having to burn a disc.

Nice touch there...

I heard about the update, and thought it was about time. Now only to find out you still can't stream divx..WTF!?!? Who is the genius that thought this one up... In my house discs are obsolete, and this is just a waste of time.  This is the main reason I never used the 360 for any kind of video, and probably never will...

Microsoft is so behind the ball with the codecs. We should be able to stream 1080p mkv's by now. Needless to say this whole xvid update was a bit...pointless?

PS- evans112628, how are you streaming the divx from your pc? One of those on the fly converters?

Also Bubbalynch, ever heard of extracting the file?

Why the hell would I extract ANY video file when XBMC plays them fine??

I don't stream shit and discs aren't "obsolete" as you so put it in my house. Does that answer your ignorant question?

i posted earlier in the update thread in the xbox 360 general forum and when playing divxs the screen blanks out and only the sound plays. what the problem is with my wierd no picture but sound on my divx files playback is im using the vga cable at the resolution of 1360x768 on a samsung 32 lcd and when i play a divx the picture blanks out and switches the resolution to 640x480 and theres no picture and basically the console locks up, if i change the resolution down to 640x480 then the divx plays fine no problems, its also works fine when i use component cables, can anyone else emulate this bug?

Many thanks

I'm using a vga cable on the highest res, to my lg 42inch 1080p lcd and getting the same as you.  I haven't tried the component cables yet.

I know the movies and discs are fine because they play on XBMC and standalone divx player.

this worked!!! many thanks  pop.gif

but XBMC is still damn good. most divx/xvid are really pixelly with X360 compared to when the same film played via XBMC.

I agree this can't replace XBMC for older stuff.  I was hoping this update might get me to start encoding for the 360, since I was hoping I would have backwards compatibility with my existing library.

I have found this update hit or miss.  A lot of my files play fine, but some will pop up with unsupported codec even though I encoded most of my stuff the same way every time.  I mean I could see some of my older stuff being in an unsupported version of Xvid, but not my newer stuff.

Also does not appear to like Nero Digital, which I experimented with for a while.

Still, it is nice to have the option to play some of my files through the 360.
