I love to use TMPGENC 4.0 express. Easy to use and it comes out great.

See the link in my sig, also at the top of the forum index. Some people don't realize it can be easily adapted to any format. I've used the same fundamentals to convert everything from MKV, xvid, to blu-ray and HD-DVD original discs to WMV-HD. I don't have the details in there for the full high-def format conversions, but I'll add that info soon.
If you're doing low-def files, like regular xvid usually are, then you don't need a very high bitrate. The safest bet is to use the bitrate calculator to match your original file's size. I convert xvid tv shows to WMV using the guide in 20-30 minutes. Full movies take about 90 minutes. I never really pay attention.

To OP: i use Magic Video Converter or Xilisoft Video Converter and they work great
To poster above:
ive been using Magic Video Converter to convert my avi. files to wmv files and it's been working great but for some reason media center wont play them. it sees all of my videos but it says the format is not supported. they have all been converted to wmv. files sucessfully and ive watched them on my pc fine. ive gone through the setup and my pc see the 360 and vise versa but it's not working.
