Best Buy and Wal-Mart Offer Toshiba HD-A2 for Less Than 100usd

From engadget.com:
Quote

Wal-Mart may have been the first to tempt HD-fence-sitters with a $100 HD-A2 player (however limited) [$98.87 to be exact only this friday], but it looks like it's not the only one, with Best Buy now also listing the very same player for the impulse buy-inducing price of $99.99. Of course, it's sold out online, so you may be better off trying your luck at your local store.

Note: yes, Toshiba still gives you 5 free HD DVD movies with any HD DVD player you buy, including the A2 (FYI: max resolution of this player is 1080i, not 1080p).

Nice - if they can stay at this price hd-dvd can probably do better than blu-ray this holiday season.  (which might encourage Warner Bros. to stop being a fence sitter?)

Same here. Only complain about the add on is when i hit open on the control (that came with the add on) it opens the 360 tray and not the add on (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) . If anyone knows how to change it message me with the instructions or link.

Thank in advance. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy.gif)

screw the add on drive... I'd take a stand-alone unit any day of the week.

this is too good of a deal NOT to pass up, At $100 you can buy it and still be a fence sitter that rents HD-DVDs in the mean time  biggrin.gif

I just picked up a 30GB Zune for $89 earlier this week too... Another deal that was too good to pass up, though I'll probably use it as gift  rolleyes.gif ... maybe  laugh.gif

wow!! i wonder if amazon will jump on this bandwagon too. i bought my add on drive for $180 shipped from amazon with king kong in the retail box, 2 additional free movies in the shipping box plus the 5 free movie rebate, but i am considering which local walmart would be best to hit up for this deal tomorrow. i am positive my wife will not be able to distinguish the lower resolution and i get 5 more free movies from the new rebate batch.

very tempted to jump on this price...

This is very tempting to me. I've been thinking lately of getting a HD-DVD player, but wasn't sure I wanted to spend the money. At $100, I don't think i'll be able to pass it up.

I got a Zune when it was $99 (refurb).  I'm quite impressed with it.  If there was a chance in hell of me scoring a $99 HDDVD player tomorrow I would consider taking the day off, but I'd bet this is just a marketing ploy.

Good luck in Richmond getting one from Best Buy. Called 4 stores and one said they had one, but when I got there they said it must be the display, I would have bought it, but no remote.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

I've been sitting on the fence up till now, but since the low price, I'll buy the player and maybe a few movies, but I'm still holding off on buying a lot of movies. Honestly I hope it makes a huge push for HD-DVD camp and maybe even seals the deal. I really don't care who wins just as long as one does and fast, but would rather see HD-DVD win and now I don't mind throwing some money their way since they are trying to make it affordable.

And all the BBs that I talked to told me the HD-A2 is being discontinued, so good luck finding them.

Hoping to catch the Walmart deal in the AM.

Dumb question but is the only difference between 1080i and 1080p resolution?  How big of a difference is it?

If material on the disk was encoded at 60 (or 50) full frames per second then it might make a difference between interlaced and progressive (1080i or 1080p). If you are talking about reproducing film output (just 24 fps) on a flat panel display (which is naturally progressive) then there is  zero difference. Instead of 24 progressive frames being output at 1080p from the HD-dvd player and reproduced on screen, with 1080i 48 interlaced (or half frames) are output and then de-interlaced by the flat panel display and displayed as 1080p.

The only folk that the lack of 1080p would effect would be those with display devices that natively display whatever is given to them as opposed to flat panel devices which are only progressive. An example of these would be say CRT front projection owners but anyone who's got a CRT PJ that can do 1080p will either have a scaler that will do the de-interlacing for them or more likely (given the cost of the PJ) a higher end HD-DVD player.

There is no resolution difference, both are displayed at 1920x1080. The difference is 1080p (progressive) is displayed at 60Hz while 1080i (interlaced) only at 30Hz.

I understand it is displayed at the same resolution but you won't be able to tell the difference on a TV that displays 720p/1080i?

Dude I live in a podunk town in southeastern Virginia and I went up to Walmart this morning thinking that our place wouldn't be participating. To my astonishment there was a line all the way out of electronics! Not to mention a mountain of $350 ACER laptops and Toshiba A2 HD DVD players. I bought 3 of them!

Whats more, that great 5 DVD deal is still on so you get 5 free HD DVDs from Toshiba! Really an amazing steal!

Just stopped by Walmart on my lunch break to grab some movies to watch (my mom got my player earlier and no way I was letting her pick out any movies, lol).

There are more than just the 3 movies that are $15.

Big Labowski
12 Monkeys
Italian Job
Casino
Goodfellas
Blood Diamonds
Four Brothers
Seabiscut
And one other movie, some drama IIRC

Those were all for $15 at the store I went to (Brook Rd Walmart Richmond, VA).

EDIT: Per a post on engadget, here is the full list

QUOTE

Clerks 2
Lucky # S7even
Pulse
Failure to Launch
4 Brothers
Italian Job
Sleepy Hollow
Casino
12 Monkeys
Backdraft
Big Lebowski
Sea Biscuit
Alexander Revisted
Blood Diamond
Full Metal Jacket
The Last Samurai
Swordfish
Unforgiven

me and my friend woke up bright and early and headed to wal-mart to get the HDDVD player and we both got one. I was surprised to see about 10 people waiting in line for the player and 20-30 for the laptop they were offering. I read on the website that there was only going to be 10 HDDVD players per wal-mart but ours had around 20-30. Of course we bought transformers and watched it on his 37" lcd and might I say it looked beautiful. I will most likely be selling mine though, hoping to make a few extra bucks once they get sold out smile.gif

That makes two of us. Went to the first Walmart and they were sold out by 8:00 A.M. went to the second and they had 5 left. I got two of them and buy the time i got everything paid for they were sold out. Then you get 5 free movies too! Man i think this is going to hurt BR big time. Dont know if you guys read what Sony said about Walmart dropping the price but they stated that they will continue to sell there BR players at $399 through the holidays.  dry.gif

Oh well GO HD-DVD!!!  love.gif

good luck finding one anywhere.. they have been discontinued for awhile now, and both companies are doing it just to blow thru their stock. screwed up part is that walmart knew they didn't have any, yet created the buzz to get people in their door (hence not listing a minimum quantity per store like best buy always does on deals like this)..  also screwed up? walmart told their employees to sell people as much accessories as they could and then send people to best buy for a price match on the player itself (instead of even trying to have them upsell the customer to a different player) .. that way best buy would get screwed on margin erosion .. they're doing it with a $1k 42" plasma as well.. very under-handed move that you will see pretty often this holiday season.

walmart is definitely throwing down the gauntlet with this move..

oh, and for those thinking that walmart must've made a ton of money on this.. they didn't. those players were actually sold for quite a bit below cost.  this was a pure and simple power play..

Tried stopping in to a local Best Buy. They didn't have any A2's and weren't offering any rain checks. They did, however, mention that they're going to sell the A3 models for $199 on Black Friday. That's $100 off the normal price of $299.

Apparently they've run this promotion before (based off posts I've read elsewhere), so this isn't special.

Just wanted to let everyone know.

Keep it. Unless your TV has a terrible scaler in it then you will not be able tell ANY difference in PQ. As long as your set can properly de-interlace then you will be seeing a beautiful 1080p picture on screen.....
