Title: Easy Mkv To Mp4 For Xbox 360
Post by: J^^ on September 03, 2007, 02:32:00 PM
Here is a quick and easy way to convert an MKV to an MP4 for the 360...

1. Using MKVmerge demux the video and audio from your MKV file.

2. Using whichever software you choose, convert the audio to MP4 (remember it has to be 2 channel AAC LC). This can be done with a number of different programs.... choose whichever one you are most familiar with (ie. meGUI, foobar2000 (with the proper plugins), etc.)

3. Using h264info change the level of the video (the .h264 file) to 4.1 (This will not re-encode the video so it will only take a few minutes to re-write). Make sure that the output filename is different than the input or it will fail.

4. Using MP4Box or YAMB (to avoid command lines) remux the video and audio.

That's it! You are now ready to play the new file without suffering though a lengthy re-encoding process!

Remember that this only works if your video bitrate is already below the max of 10 Mbps (with resolutions of 1920x1080 and a framerate of 30fps).

Hope this saves some of you lots of time!

Sounds good.  You can't play 5.1 channel audio with the 360 though?  That kinda sucks.  I didn't know that.  Just bought a huge 750gb hard drive though.  Time to start experiment with some HD movies.

Only WMV-HD can do 5.1 audio; mp4 is limited to 2ch.

Thanks mate. This worked like a charm form my mkv files. No re-encode needed. Now, if only we could somehow integrate this into Videora's Converter that would be the greatest.

Glad to see someone is getting some use out of my little tutorial! I haven't converted anything since coming up with this nice little method. Be ready to watch something in 20 minutes or 3-4 hours.... hmmmmm I think I know what I'm picking! haha

it isnt low quality..... just not 5.1.... and seeing as how I don't have a surround sound set up (disconnected last system as it wasn't that good) I can live with 2.0.

And then one day you will get surround sound, and your media archive will be (in my opinion) useless. On the other hand, you could build a future-ready media library that will let you enjoy the new hardware that you'll most likely purchase down the road.

I wouldn't say useless.... yes 2.0 isn't as good as 5.1 (obviously) but I can live with 2.0 even with a surround sound system. If I was going to go with 5.1 then I would use WMNicEnc. It keeps 5.1 and completes the conversion in almost real-time as opposed to using such programs as TMPGEnc.

Thanks for this tutorial, just what I need to get my MKV's streaming to the 360, I've done step 1, opened the mkv up in MKVmerge and emuxed the file with a different file name (episode1.mkv was original file, called this episode1b.mkv)

Installed megui but I am stuck now, I load up the MKV so i can convert to MP4 but now joy, says file 'Problem with video filename: The path is not of a legal form' so can;t get any further.

Bit of a newbie at conversions so excuse me if I am being a bit thick here.

Any help most welcome, cheers

Do you have any character in the filename that is out of the ordinary? (Sorry didn't notice you said episode1b.mkv). If not just try another program (I like foobar2000 because with the right plugins - just search for mkv plugin for foobar - you don't even have to extract the audio).

Hope this helps!

I just wanted to leave a quick comment to thank you for coming up with this technique!  What a time saver.  For me, this is perfect for the TV shows I download in x264/mkv format I that just want to watch once and then delete.

To convert the AC3 to AAC, I like using BeLight 0.2.2.0 beta 9 with BeSweet 1.5 beta 31.  I couldn't get the RC1 of BeLight to work.  You can grab them here:

http://coreforge.org...-0.22_beta9.zip
http://download.vide...eSweetGUIv0.zip

Of the different options available, I could only get it to work with Nero Digital™ Audio+ 1.1.34.2:
http://www.nero.com/...own-ndaudio.php

Thanks again!

I got everything merged fine (althought the mp4 file won't read in the zune player). but after I burn't it to a disc and played it on the 360, it worked fine. Then all the sudden, the video and audio starts going out of sync. I don't know what could make it do that halfway through the episode.

If Zune won't read it rename to .wmv and then you can add it to the library. Or do just like you did and burn the file to a disc and it will play fine. As for the out of sync it may be a problem with the original file itself. If not just try to renencode the audio again.

Even better. Install WMP11 and share via that and all your problems will magically dissapear. I did that and now I can even play files that Zune Software wouldn't touch even though they had been correctly converted.

I found what the problem was. I didn't match up the frame-rate correctly, I was just a tiny bit, but that is why it sounded worse near the completion of the video.

As for WMP11 or Zune, it wouldn't accept the MP4 file, but it did accept the wmv.

Thanks for the help, and excellent tutorial.

If you have two files after a demux then one should be video and one should be audio.

Well, I'm only getting 1 file afterwards, is there a special way to select DEmuxing as opposed to just "start Muxing"

Thanks for the response.

Can one of you guys edit the tutorial using images from the programs during each step?  I would be eternally grateful...

"Start Muxing" would be used to mux the files together (put two files into one). "Demux" would be to separate two (or more) files. If you are hitting "Start muxing" then you are doing the opposite of what you should be. Hope this helps!

I tried the method of the original poster, but I couldn't get it to work. The files played fine on the pc, but on the xbox, they would have sound only.

Anyway, I found a program called GOTSent that sounds like it does essentially the same thing, but it is automated, and it worked for me.

I had an audio sync issue also where about halfway through the sync would start to go noticeably off.  By the end, the sync was so off that the character's lips stopped moving before the audio played.  I typed in the frame rate as 23.98 in Yamb, i'll try the more accurate 23.976 to see if that helps issues.

I should also add that the PQ from this method is SPECTACULAR.  MUCH MUCH better than the mkv --> wmv guide sticked above.  No more 18 hour encode times for me (only a celery laptop here) assuming I get the audio issue fixed. wink.gif

Try using the exact framerate of 23.976 and see if it works (like you said). If not I would try a different encoder. If that doesn;t work you might just be out of luck. I've had this happen only once and it was do to a problem with the video in the original mkv. It played fine on the pc but there was a skip in the video and when i extracted / converted the audio it put it out of sync. There was no way around this. But even converting it to wmv was no help. I've also seen issues where the video is encoded at 23.976 fps but the audio is at 25 fps. This too will cause it to go out of sync. In this case you would need something such as besweet to fix the audio.

3. Using h264info change the level of the video (the .h264 file) to 4.1 (This will not re-encode the video so it will only take a few minutes to re-write). Make sure that the output filename is different than the input or it will fail.

hi guys
been trying for days now to get  h264 files to play on my 360 and this sems the best option for me

You're downloading the wrong file... go to https://sourceforge....cts/batchccews/

Click on Download BatchCCEWS and then you will see a link to download h264info.

Newbie needs help!

I'm working with an mkv file with 1080p h.264 video at around 11Mbps and DTS 6 channel audio.  I followed this tutorial the best I could and used a guide from http://dtsguide.de.vu/ to convert the DTS file to 2 channel AAC (LC).  I was never able to create a working mp4.

I tried the program posted in this reply:

I was able to convert the mkv to a working mp4 in windows media player.  When I put it on a flash drive and tried to play it on the 360, the video gets crazy artifacts with any motion and is unwatchable, but it looks great on the PC.  I also tried streaming from WMP11 as well as TVersity.  There's no difference.  The video is not jumpy or dropping frames, it just gets very very very blocky with any motion.

I'm wondering how I can see what level the video is at? Maybe the program didn't convert it to 4.1.  I don't know how to tell.  Any help or comments please?

I found another person struggling with the same issue with no resolution here: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?act...67&t=625947
Don't know if this will help, but he describes it a little better and provides h264info results.  I will try that when I get home, but I still don't see where it tells you the level of the video.

1.    What exactly does the Xbox 360 support for H.264?

Xbox 360 supports the following for H.264:

·         File Extensions: .mp4, .m4v, mp4v, .mov

·         Containers: MPEG-4, QuickTime

·         Video Profiles: Baseline, main, and high (up to Level 4.1) profiles.

·         Video Bitrate: 10 Mbps with resolutions of 1920 x 1080 at 30fps.

·         Audio Profiles: 2 channel AAC low complexity (LC)

·         Audio Max Bitrate: No restrictions. See question number 6 for more information.

The bitrate of your file is too high.... this could be the cause....

Sorry for the confusion.  The source file was around 11-12 Mbps.  The mp4 file I made with GOTSent set the video stream to 10Mbps.  I just installed MediaInfo.  Here's the output from the mp4...
And here is the info from the source mkv file...
I still can't tell if the video is encoded at level 4.1 or 5.1.  How can I get that info?

When you add the h264 file (video) to YAMB (a gui to create mp4) it tells you there. Try that.

I should add that the frame rate adjustment (from 23.8 --> 23.976) fixed 99% of my lip sync issues.  It does still get slightly off near the end but at a completely manageable level.  Heck, I probably would not have noticed it if I hadn't been looking for it. wink.gif

For foobar you just have to look for ac3 and mp4 plugins (or componants as they are called for foobar)

Not sure what I'm doing wrong here but here's my situation

I have an x264 MKV that plays fine in vlc, media player classic etc. Demuxed this to a .264 and .aac with mkvmerge, now for some reason the .264 file plays VERY choppy in vlc, like the frames are totally messed up. I'm running a pretty beefy quad core system atm so I doubt this is normal.

Regardless of this i do the h264info 4.1 thing, and again same thing with the playback, choppy.

Remux with YAMB and it crashes at 99% and leaves me with a video that looks fine on pc but won't play on 360. I tried to remux with MEgui but that won't even load the .h264.

I'm guessing my codecs are messed up but I've tried the combined community pack (includes ffdshow), coreavc etc with the same results

Hey

This works well, but i have run into problems with 2 mkvs that i am trying to change

Not sure why, looked at all the settings, but just wil not play on the xbox 360

From media file here is the mkv file info

Format               : Matroska
File size            : 7.85 GiB
PlayTime             : 2h 16mn
Bit rate             : 8242 Kbps
Movie name           : test.mkv
Encoded date         : UTC 2007-05-27 23:35:47
Writing application  : mkvmerge v2.0.2 ('You're My Flame') built on Feb 21 2007 23:40:55
Writing library      : libebml v0.7.7 + libmatroska v0.8.1
Cover                : LFAX.TTF / LFAXD.TTF / LFAXDI.TTF / LFAXI.TTF / TIMES.TTF / TIMESBD.TTF / TIMESBI.TTF / TIMESI.TTF

Video #0
Codec                : MPEG-4 AVC
Codec/Info           : MPEG4 ISO advanced profile
PlayTime             : 2h 16mn
Width                : 1280 pixels
Height               : 532 pixels
Aspect ratio         : 2.406
Frame rate           : 23.976 fps
Title                : test
Language             : English

i use the h264info to change it to 4.1

The audio is standard ac3, so i have not added the info

Question i want to ask

Is it to do with the level?
This file is over 4gb, i have external HD with hfs+, would this stop it from playing?
But i have split the file to test, using Yamb, and still does not work

When i change it with h264, i get Codec/Info MPEG4 Base

Is there something i am missing?

I get the status code 69-02-c00d36c4 on the 360

Many thanks

Ok, i have found the problem to be with the file size limit.

Helpful Tip

If the file size is over 4gb, and you play it on external file size, it will not play

If you cut the mp4 to make it in 2 parts using Yamb, the first part will not the work, the second part will work.

No idea why this is, has been driving me mad tongue.gif

Anyway, to get around it, use mkvmerge first, and add the mkv file, and go to settings and split the file there, and then do the above tutorial tongue.gif

Hope this helps

Wow, great tip, Jamrop!  I couldn't figure out why the TV shows I downloaded and converted would play fine, but the movies wouldn't.  At one point I suspected that file size might have something to do with it, so I did what you did and split the MP4 file with YAMB.  As you say, that doesn't work.  I just assumed that it must have been something incompatible during the original encode, but it never even occurred to split the file before the conversion, instead of after!

It adds extra steps, but it's still worth it!  Thanks again!

Someone please help- I am having the hardest time converting my AC3 audio to AAC... I've tried using MeGUI and FooBar2000. I can't seem to get it to work.  When I use MeGui and I just try to convert the audio to aac it won't let me, because it tries to read the video and won't let me do it without putting my video file in, but all I want to do is convert the audio. Can someone please post a step by step guide on how to convert the AC3 file to LC aac

I have tried this method several times on different samples of Transformers, does the resolution of 1280*528 have an effect. Because I have yet to be successful on getting the video to play in quicktime or zune. Zune does nothing, while quicktime on plays audio. Oh and the 360 does not play it at all.

After some trial and error this is the easiest way I have found to get this working.

Large files such a movies need to be split beforehand as said above.  I tried splitting in post and it just doesnt work, even with GotSents split feature, which splits the mp4 as opposed to the mkv before conversion.

So

1) MKVmerge to split the file into the appropriate filesizes (under 4gb) > start muxing

2) Gotsent to convert the new mkv's into 360 compatible video.

3) burn and enjoy ohmy.gif)

I'll ask the dev team at GotSent of they can include the option to split mkv before so it will work with 360, if a few others join in then we have a 1 click process for conversion.

Cheers, Ant

ok, im fairly competent when it comes to HD and converting etc, and i always use movie maker to convert my films from mkv/avi/mpeg to 720/1080p WMV files, they work everytime and look just as good.

is there any reason i shouldnt be doing this? is the method above any better?

movie maker is great for converting, the only down side is no batch conversion, but other than that its all been fine so far smile.gif

Why should you do this? Because it is much faster than converting with Movie Maker. This process takes about 15 minutes for a file as opposed to hours for re-encoding. It has not failed me yet and I've thrown plenty of files at it.

I'd looked for a way to do this a few months ago, but didn't find anything, so I was happy to see this...but I'm having some trouble.

MP4Box crashes at 99%. The created mp4 file looks fine on my computer but on my 360 there are weird blocks on the picture, especially for moving areas. Other people are having this problem but I see no solutions.

Any ideas? I streamed it with TVersity. I'll also try burning it soon.

I have a bunch of questions about this.

I was able to successfully do the conversion using the GotSent tool at http://sentry23.googlepages.com/.  The only problem is that while I get perfectly synchronized audio/video, sometimes the video is blocky.  Has anyone seen this problem and resolved it?

Second, I'm able to share this mp4 video, see it, and play it directly in the X360 using WMP11's Library sharing.  However, if I go into Media Center from the X360 menu and try to view it that way, I get a "codec not supported" error message.  Is there any way to get this thing to play in Media Center Extender?  (Note: it does work if I use Transcode360, but that seems kind of stupid.. convert to mp4 and then transcode to view.)

If you read the Xbox 360 Video FAQ you'll see that mp4 is not spported in Media Center.... they only videos supported through MC are wmv and mpeg-2.

Only WMV-HD can do 5.1 audio; mp4 is limited to 2ch.

So wmv-hd supports 5.1 and p4 doesn't?  So far I've been playing mostly 720p mp4 content converted by other people.  Although the 2.1 audio is a bummer the picture kinda makes up for it.  I tried encode 360 some myself and haven;t been happy with the results or the time it takes.  When it comes to streaming hd content what do I need to keep in mind for encoding or modifying files and which of these methods seems to be working best?  My tv is 1080p and I have an elite, but most movies encoded in 1080p seem to be fairly pixelated by encoders...is there anyway around this?

How are sync issues going for everyone once converted?  That's one of my biggest gripes about encoding stuff myself, I'm usually left with a video that's out of sync half way through or near the end.  I can't stand it when shit's outta sync, it's like I have OCD and constantly check to see if the movie's in sync... unsure.gif

The Threadstarter just forgot to mention the Framerate. Youll have to set the Framerate of the movie at the last step in Yamb (under properties). In most Cases 23.976 (i think). If you dont know it, you could use Gspot to get the correct number. After that everthing should be synchron.

Sorry for my english.

Tried a couple of files, usually works fine. MeGui is a little hard to use at first with that confusing "input video path" error. Auto-encode didn't work for me, needed to use the enqueue function before converting the aac file manually.

I'd recommend GOTsent though. MKV conversion on the fly. Don't forget to download the right codecs!

Gotsent needs AC3Filter and Haali Media Splitter as told on http://sentry23.googlepages.com/.

You could download the Combined Community Codec Pack which has all the latest codecs needed for proper playback and converting. This also includes AC3filter and Haali Media Splitter.

Edit: My bad, AC3Filter is NOT included. You could also try downloading the neroaacenc (http://www.nero.com/eng/nero-aac-codec.html) and putting it in the Gotsent dir.

Did you get memory errors? Had that on my first try including the split files...

Try selecting the "safesync" option. Then GOTsent won't use a3filter/directshow -> wav but ffmpeg -> neroaacenc.exe.

Hi guys, I have a weird problem with converting mkv to mp4 using GotSent.

I have absolutely no problem getting perfect playback when converting videos like an episode of Heroes or Planet Earth but every time I convert a movie, the video is awfully blocky.

At first I thought it was due to file size but that couldn't be the case since the episode of Planet Earth I converted was slightly bigger than one of the movie files I have. I tried to re-convert the movie using 25fps as that is the original fps on the mkv file but I'm still getting the blocky video.

Can someone help me out here? I don't know what's wrong. uhh.gif  uhh.gif

The strangest thing happens when i use gotsent: While i'm monitoring the folder where the output file is supposed to appear at the end of the process, it actually appears, but when gotsent is "done", it dissapears. So basicaly i get nothing.

2. Question, how to do i convert an AAC LC 6ch to 2ch? I was able to make the mp4 from a mkv (though i get really ugly playback problems, like ugly squares), but when i mux it with the audio, like it's a 6ch source, the 360 won't play it.

Nope.

MP4 supports a few different ways of embedding subs, but none of them are supported by Xbox360. I tried embedding SRT, TTXT and finally DVD-style vobsub-file (like NERO), you just get "not available" from the subtitle icon.

So just bite the bullet and encode the damn thing to WMV9 or VC1 with burned subtitles. I'd suggest AutoMKV. dual (quad!) core CPUs are not very expensive these days  dry.gif

I guess that the latest video update doesn't help much when it comes to having 5.1 sound?

I guess 5.1 AC3 is only supported for avi containers which in turn can't or mustn't hold MP4 content, right?
Otherwise one could try to convert MKV to AVI with 5.1 AC3 and MP4 video.

You can get some kind of multi-channel sound encoding MP4 stereo AAC as Pro logic II, thought.

And, yeah, AVI doesn't take h.264 ..

Are you making sure that the bitrate is within the guidelines.... a 1080p would probably be too high if it was done properly..... that could be the reason for your artifacts. I have used the origional method I first posted over and over and over again without problems.... GOTsent has worked maybe 25% of the time I've used it..... That may be an issue as well?

The strangest thing happens when i use gotsent: While i'm monitoring the folder where the output file is supposed to appear at the end of the process, it actually appears, but when gotsent is "done", it dissapears. So basicaly i get nothing.

I have the same exact problem here.  It appears as if everything is processing properly, but it won't give an output file.  It clearly demuxes the files and removes them when it's done, but there simply does not finish with a completed file.  It just says the encoding is finished.

I can really see GOTSent being the simple one click tool we need, but I can't find any other buttons or options to try and figure out what the problem is.

converted movie playes fine on PC but not on Xbox 360...

yes the bitrate are under the max setting (8000kb appox) only thing i can think of is maybe this movie has subtitle. i can see GOTsent extracts 3 files which are movie, sounds & subtitles. there isn't any option in GOTsent to get rid of subs, you must choose one.

it is a h.264 profile problem; no matter what gotsent does to make the video readable by the xbox (mainly by changing the profile tag in the file), it simply wont play normally.

I have converted over 50 720p mkv movies in Gotsent and only two had issues.  They play great on my Ps3 and 360.  Seems the PS3 renders MP4 a little better though.  I use the Nero AAC plugin and have had no sound issues(other than no true 5.1).

Did you ever had the problem where there is no file in the output directory after the convertion?
Except GotSent, Halli Media Spliter and the AC3Filter, do you install something else?

Thanks!

Gotsent is a great little package. The problem with it (and I think the developer is working on this) is that there is very little in the way of instructions or a tutorial in how to set it up.

It took me a while to configure it all perfectly but I did it.

1) you must have ac3filter installed to have any hope of it working.
2) you must have ac3filter configured correctly. ie have it set up to output 2ch stereo and handle dts.
3) you must put neroAacEnc.exe in your gotsent folder. you can use 'safe sync' option but that isn't as good and only handle ac3...
4) make sure the '4gb split' option is ticked
5) some MKVs have multiple audio and subtitle tracks. This confuses gotsent. Just use MKVmerge to remux only the video and main audio track back into a new MKV before using gotsent.

after all this you should get some great results.

There are some files that JUST WON'T DISPLAY CORRECTLY on the 360 but this isn't gotsent's fault. It is something to do with the way they are encoded.

Is this option in GOTSent?  If so, clearly my version (GOTSent_022.exe) is outdated or something, because that is not available for me.

You are a lifesaver!  My problem was that it appeared to be working, but I just wasn't ending up with file after it was done.  It turns out my problem was caused by the ac3filter configuration mentioned in step 2, so the conversion wasn't actually completing (even though it looked like it was).  All I had to do was go in and change that 1 setting and then the process worked perfectly.  I had already figured out how to do everything step by step from the beginning of this thread, but I am so happy that I can now do it all with one program and cut down on all of those steps.

I skipped step 3 (because I just don't know what neroAacEnc.exe is) and step 4 (I can't find that option anywhere), but I'm on my 3rd video and the first 2 have come out great.

Regarding step 5, I have one suggestion.  You mentioned MKVmerge to remux the video, but you didn't mention the fact that you have to actually demux the video first with MKVextract.  This may seem obvious, but for a beginner, this is a very crucial step.  I bring this up because the OP mentioned demuxing the video with MKVmerge and it took me quite some time to figure out he was referring to the wrong program.   In fact, someone else in this thread mentioned that it wasn't working when they pressed the "Start Muxing" button, to which someone replied they were pressing the wrong button.  The problem was just that the wrong program was mentioned, so the needed button wasn't there.

I think GOTSent & your tutorial here would be the perfect process for playing mkv files if the instructions provided more detail, screenshots, and links.  I wouldn't want to get the credit that you're due, but I would be happy to rewrite this for you (I like doing tutorials; check out this tutorial I wrote for the PS2 memory card exploit a few years ago).

Wouldn't it be great if we could queue up a bunch of files and let it run overnight?  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Glad you got it working!

Step 3 (neroAacEnc.exe)  - is from the free nerodigitalaudio package (google it). Unzip it and place that particular .exe in the GOTsent folder. Basically it is a better AAC encoder.

Step 5 - sorry, should have mentioned you need MKVmerge GUI as well the mkvmerge. Using this you can remux straight from the existing MKV as input, no need for MKVextract...

Feel free to rewrite this Mike, no problems! I make no claim to this information, just passing on my experiences! You seem to do a good job, give it a go!

i finally got it working for every File on the 360 without encoding the videofile and without getting problems with the Video!

I used gotsent and already had the points you are talking about now but i recognized that the important h264info.exe was not used by gotsent and is just for ps3 users who want their File in vob.

I downloaded and started the newest version of h264info and took my videostream (h264file from the mkv), wrote 4.1 in the Level (the unplayable Files had 5.1 etc.) und muxed it. After that i just put the new videostream with mkvmerge in a new mkv (with the old ac3, mp3 or dts) - sometimes you have to choose the right framerate if mkvmerge asks you to. After that the new mkv was used for Gotsent and since that every mkv/mp4 File works now on my 360!

If it has to be split (strange thing that some x264 really work over 4gb with hfs+ although Ms has blocked that) i prefer to do it by mkvmerge directly than with gotsent. Had some Errors when i checked split in Gotsent.

I think I have got everything sorted now in gotsent thanks to this thread, I am sure some files will just not work because of the way they are encoded.

Have tried 3 files and got 3 MP4s at the end of it,none of them work (probably just the file types) however getting them to stream to my xbox is the nightmare.

I am using WMP11 sharing, I can share everything else but cant share anything for MP4s.

Has anyone done this?

You are wasting time with what you are doing... you are demuxing and remuxing twice. You demux to change the level to 4.1 then remux and run it through gotsent (which will demux and remux again for you). Why dont you just change the audio after you demux the first time to AAC-LC and remux with the 4.1 h264 video using YAMB to an mp4 file? It will save you some wasted time and if you do it right... you will not have any problems.

I'm just so so lost. I followed the tutorial and did everything mentioned and in the end I get a file that plays great on my pc but wont work on my xbox when streaming through media player. At first i would get a file that just had no picture or sound on my xbox. Then I thought i figured out where i went wrong and then i ended up with a completely unreadable file. So basically here is what i'm doing.

Taking the file apart and getting a seperate audio and video file.

Use h264.info to change the video level to  4.1

Use GOTsent to change the audio to 2 channel.

Using Yamb to put the files back together as an mp4

And nothing. Maybe its because I know nothing at all about encoding or recoding whatever, but i'm failing everytime. I have been searching the net for over a week now and have tried many different methods i've seen on message boards and none of them work. So now i have about 10 new programs on my computer and none of them are doing me any good. Please help! If you have aim or msn that would be great, maybe i just need a person to talk to.

I think the common problem for most people is GOTsent. Use another program (megui, foobar2000, etc.) to convert the audio and use h264info to change the level of the video. I have not had a problem with a single file using the original method that I posted. I tried GOTsent and half my files didn't work. The program, although a great idea, is just too buggy at this point. Hopefully is is fully functional somewhere down the road!

no matter what i try, the manual way, GOTsent & Videora Xbox 360 version(which it similar to GOTsent) they all failed. for some films the passthrough simply won't work. specially ones above 720p/8000kbps. but even one 480p film failed. i get hit and miss. just like someone mentioned above, i got 10 different software/tools installed just to make them work....

all works fine on my PC but not X360 dry.gif  anyone with a PS3 tried to make the mp4 work for them?

Here's a very, very simple batch file that I use to convert all my mkvs.  So far, 100% of them have worked.  I downloaded GotSent and the Nero AAC encoder, but I don't actually use GotSent.  Since it doesn't run h264info by default, it's basically worthless for us with 360s.

Note that the batch file is stupid and doesn't actually detect the order of the audio/video tracks in the original mkv.  So you have to run mkvinfo against the file to see which tracks is audio and which is video, and change the mkvextract line accordingly.

Save this code as a batch file (say convert.bat) in the directory with your mkv file(s), change the progdir line to point to the location where GotSent is extracted on your machine (spaces in the path should be ok), and run it from the command line like:
convert.bat filename_goes_here.mkv

It's a very dumb script, so if you don't have things set up right, it ain't going to work.  Sanity checking in batch files is just too much work.

CODE
@echo off
set progdir=D:\GotSent
set basename=%~n1
set fullpath=%~dp1

@REM Run mkvextract
"%progdir%\MKVToolnix\mkvextract.exe" tracks %basename%.mkv 1:video.h264 2:audio.ac3

@REM Convert AC3 audio to 2 channel wav
"%progdir%\ffmpeg\ffmpeg.exe" -i audio.ac3 -ac 2 audio.wav
del audio.ac3

@REM Convert wav to AAC LC
"%progdir%\neroaacenc.exe" -lc -q .9 -if audio.wav -of audio.aac
del audio.wav

@REM Create the ini file for h264info
del "%progdir%\h264info\h264info.ini"
echo [Paths] > "%progdir%\h264info\h264info.ini"
echo InputPath=%fullpath%video.h264 >> "%progdir%\h264info\h264info.ini"
echo OutputPath=%fullpath%video-4.1.h264 >> "%progdir%\h264info\h264info.ini"

@REM Run h264info
"%progdir%\h264info\h264info.exe"
del video.h264

@REM Add the converted audio/video into the final mp4
"%progdir%\MP4Box\MP4Box.exe" -add video-4.1.h264 -add audio.aac -fps 23.976 temp.video

@REM Added a temp.mp4 and then moved to the real mp4, otherwise WMP11 doesn't see the new file
move temp.video %basename%.mp4

@REM Final cleanup
del video-4.1.h264
del audio.aac

I'm not providing any support for this thing, so if it doesn't work for you, tough. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)  I've commented every line, so just about anyone should be able to figure out what it is doing.  Maybe I'll get around to writing it in Java, making it smart, and adding a GUI, but I doubt it will be anytime soon.  Or the GotSent creator could just add an option to force the h264info call, and then I wouldn't have to do anything. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Is everyone using an older version of GOTSent or something? 99.9% of my files work just fine with version 0.23 beta 8 (coptic rain version)....

It must be a configuration issue.

BTW I have thrown 5.1 profile files at it and it DOES convert to 4.1. Not sure why you think it doesn't.

JBark, the batch worked great. I converted some MKVs I had that I could not get GOTSent to convert properly. I will definitely continue to use it.

For some reason when I use GOTSent the audio doesn't sync properly.

And yes I'm using .23 beta 8.

Anyway, thanks a lot JBark, though I do hope to avoid having to convert all together in the future.

Oops, forgot to mention one thing about my batch file (and I hate the stupid no edit after 15 minute rule):

The fps is hardcoded on the MP4Box call, so if you need something different, you'll have to change that too.  When you run mkvinfo on the original mkv to get the track info, it will give you the right frame rate to use as well.

I did send an email to the GotSent developer asking for an option to always run h264info, and he said it wouldn't be a problem, and that he's currently working on an update that has a seperate option menu with a bunch of stuff to choose from.  So hopefully I won't need my cheesy batch file anymore.

I'm currently doing some tests to see if I can determine exactly why GotSent doesn't always seem to generate an MP4 that works on the 360.  It's either something to do with the 4.1 Level (which the dev said he's setting in his code for every conversion, though not with h264info), or the audio isn't always converting right (probably an ac3filter config issue).  Any easy check for an ac3filter config problem is to check the safe sync box, which uses ffmpeg instead (like my batch file).

Hi there

All my mkv converted to mp4 works on the 360 throught usb drive. I use mkvextract for demux + h264info/mediaencoder for video modification and audio conversion (but i think use nero acc in the future who is better), and YAMB for remux.

The problem is i play the most file throught media player 11 sharing feature, but if i want share a mp4 for watch high resolution movie, how can i do ? wmp don't want share mp4 file...the doc say rename your file to avi for add in wmp, but in the doc they also say a h264 only works if it's a .mp4 file...(and a divx only works in a .avi)

I tried to rename in .avi, but for 360 .avi contain divx or xvid, no more, like explicated in documentation...

Put the file on external hdd ? Well my movie is from a blueray disc, and has i know fat32 not support file larger than 4 Gb, my file is 7 Gb...

Strangly, i can easly share wmv hd throught wmp...but what about MP4? It's the microsoft politic...they realize the new standard is HD, then they add the low divx/xvid support, but for new HD technology which used more, more and more, your always limited to Micr*soft Corp (alias WMV HD)

Use TVersity to stream, instead of Windows Media Player?

Also, you should be able to get a quality HD rip from blu-ray under 4GB with proper encoding settings.

here's how I got MP4 files working in Vista/Xp WMP11 and the Xbox 360:

1. Install FFDShow. I used the latest version 20070805. Allow use for all apps to enable explorer thumbnails.
2. Configure FFDShow: I like to disable the trayicons.
3. Install Haali Media Splitter (latest as of 20070807)
4. Configure Haali: Autoload VSFilter=yes, Show tray icon=no, Enable thumbnails Extraction=yes
5. Run custom registry file to:
- enable WMP to identify mp4 and m4v files as video files
- enable WMP to stream mp4 and m4v files
(be careful when changing the registry!)

Copy this code to notepad and save it with an .reg extension!!

I can view and play mp4 files in Windows Media Player. With thumbnails.
I can stream mp4 files to XBox360

Notes:
It would appear the mp4 (m4v) files have to be defined as video/mp4 in the HKCR/.xxx setting to make streaming to xbox360 work

m4v works too by changing the mime-type from video/x-m4v to video/mp4 in HKCR/.m4v
Installing VLC will reset some settings (thumbnails may break, streaming of m4v may break). You will likely have to reinstall Haali and check the mime-types to fix the situation.

I transcode my video files to be iTunes/iPod compatible with Videora iPod Converter. They will thus work in iTunes, iPod, WMP11 and Xbox360

Some converted mp4 files will be rejected by iTunes due to faulty mp4-tags. The files can be fixed with Tagger. Just open the mp4 file with tagger and save it. (Update: This was a problem with ReadyBoost. Since I disabled ReadyBoost I have had no problems with importing mp4 files.)

Xbox360 will only display the mp4 video files through the dashboard (Video playback). The Xbox Media Center Extender will not play them (they will show up though).

GOTsent v0.23 beta 8 works perfectly fine for me. No need to change the video to 4.1 or anything. I just downloaded haali media splitter, put neroAacEnc.exe into the GOTsent folder, configured the newest version of AC3 filter (stereo 2 channels, and clicked everything that had to do with DTS), clicked on safe sync, and my 720p mkv file became two .mp4's. Looks great and works flawlessly on my 360 using my 8gb flash drive.

Hi guys,

Most of the movies I converted are working fine. But I have some problems with a couple of movies. All the big MKV files, for movies like LOTR that are 8gb with a bitrate more than 5000kbs, I use MKVMerge to split them into 2 files, then convert them with Gotsent. They play fine on my computer, but on the xbox, there is a lot of artefacts and the xbox makes a loud noise when reading the movie from the DVD. Is there a way to fix this? If I use the batch file JBark posted, is it going to fix this?

Is there a simple way I can downgrade the bitrate of the MKV file or I would need to convert it again?

Thanks!

I did this, put the mp4 in the media library in wmp11 , and I put the actual video in the public video folder on my pc. The file is in my media library, however it doesn't show up on my xbox. Why not?

I hope that they support mkv files with the next update. Whats the point of having 264 support without mkv. We have to go through all this shit sad.gif .

for ac3 filter, can someone tell me exactly what needs to be ticked or changed in the config? the only thing relating to dts is "spdif passthrough", "Spdif/dts mode" and "spdif/dts conversion". I've checked DTS in "passthrough" and padded DTS is chosen for spdif/dts mode. SPDIF/DTS conversion is sent to "do not convert".

Am i missing anything? what needs to be change?

thanks!

Hey folks,

When I'm converting to an mp4 using gotsent and trying to hide the 5.1 channels in a stereo output using Dolby Prologic II, which tickbox should I be selecting in GotSent; AC3 or DTS? They both play fine on my XBox, so which gives the better sound / surround extraction?

Hi guys,

How do i convert a 6 channel LC-AAC sound file to 2 channel LC-ACC?

I used mkvextract and got the seperate vid and sound file. the audio file shows up in yamb as a AAC LC -6ch -48khz file.

I'm not sure how to use foobar or something else to do this? I messed around with a random mp3 song and converted it with foobar using mp4 nero encoder... and then used Yamb. I got that to play on the 360. I can't get the movie to play on the xbox with its original sound file i assume because it is still 6 channels.

any help would be appreciated i'm new to this. thanks.

OK, I'm confused and I'm usually pretty sly at this video encoding stuff. I created a MP4 file using the tutorial - which was excellent by the way. When I add this file into WMP 11 (doesnt show up on my 360 at all) or try to play it via Tversity, my 360 tells me it's an unsupported format. Here's what mediainfo tells me:

To convert the audio get a program called BeSweet.  You can convert any type of audio.  If you have a 6 channel AAC and they are 6 different wav files it will mux them as well (select creat mux from file drop down).

Here's what I've been using and everything works well.  From what I've tested there is a 4GB limit and when your mp4 is down just rename it to .avi no need for any registry adds.

Prestep: Use mkvmerge to split your files into pieces less than 4GB if needed.
1. mkvextract to seperate audio and video.
2. put video in h264info and indicate either 2 for stereo or 4.1 (either one works).
3a. if you have dts sound use tranzcode to make it ac3
3b. now you should have either ac3 or aac and use besweet.  Make sure you make the output AAC and stereo the rest can be default.
4. Use yamb to put it all together and remember if you video says 23.98fps always use 23.976 in yamb or else it will get out of sync near the middle.
5. rename your .mp4 to .avi

Now enjoy mp4s on your 360.  Also you can run h264info and besweet simultaneously to save some time.

Okay, again about the audio. I have ac3 6ch audio file 280mb. Downloaded BeSweet, opened the audio file, made output MP4 (AAC). Is it okay ? So I converted and got file about 50mb audio file. Right ?
Btw that one audio file (without video I mean) should work ok x360 or not  ? Because for me - no.
What's wrong ?

You'd think but for some reason the files seem to need to be pre-split to 4GB or less for things to work. The latest gotsent actually does pre-split for you, and when I leave that option on, it seems to be working very very well.

What's wrong ?

ejarex,

You've done everything right.  Don't worry about the audio playing by itself.  Now just mux your audio and your video.  Make sure you ran h264 info on your video file first.  And also when muxing w/ yamb make sure to use the correct fps.  Open up the original video in Media Player Classic and then right click and properties.  It'll tell you the fps on the right tab.  Enter that number into yamb.  If MPC tells you 23.98, enter 23.976.  If it tells you 29.97 then enter 29.97.  After that rename your .mp4 file to .avi and if it's under 4GB your 360 will recognize it and play it.

Gotsent seems to have done nothing. I checked this morning and it said "conversion complete". However, I checked in the output folder, and there is nothing there. Is this a common problem?

Okay. I got an avi. Then converted audio and got "Audio: AAC 44100Hz stereo 1411Kbps [Audio]". Then muxed video and audio together with Yamb and got 3.9gb mp4 file. But it's not working on my 360. Any ideas ?

Why do you rename to .avi?  unsure.gif

Also, how do I find out what the fps are of my original mkv file?

OK, got my file down to 3.97 GB and it played beautifully on my 360. No more 20 hour encodes!. WOO HOO!

Thanks guys!

One question, when you encode the audio - what bitrate do you use? I had to go down to 132 kbit 2 channel stereo to make everything fit.

Thanks again.

Anything over 96 is OK. It isn't like an mp3 where you have to go to 192 to get decent quality. For AAC-LC 96 is good. I usually do 128 as that keeps a lot of conversions just under 4gb. Any more is really just wasted.

I used GotSent to convert an mkv file but it appears that once the file has been split and converted to mp4, only one part is playable.

Does anyone have the same problem? Any advice?
Title: Easy Mkv To Mp4 For Xbox 360

I've been having an incredible amount of trouble with this. I think the problem is the audio track. I've had several errors and crashes with Gotsent and a lot of files that are playable on my PC but not on my 360.

Can anyone clarify exactly what settings to use for the audio track? I'm assuming once you have raw 4.1 AVC video tracks you just have to MUX them with a correctly encoded audio track to get a playable MP4? What progs and encoders have people been having success with for encoding the audio? Megui and Foobar seem to give me incompatible files with practically every combination of encoder and settings I could try.

If you've got yourself into a total mess like I did here's how I fixed the broken files from Gotsent and got playable MP4's with decent audio.

1) Using Super I added the file(s) set file type=MP4, Container=Mpeg-4, Audio=AAC. Set the Video to stream copy. Set Audio to 44khz, 2 channel, 96kbps. Then encoded each file. This resulted, in my case, in two slightly broken MP4's, they appeared to be incorrectly remuxed with an odd min and max framerate according to mediainfo and a difference in time for the length of the audio and video tracks. Playable but choppy and out of sync. This was however the only way I seemed to be able to get proper 360 compatible MP4 audio tracks. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

2) I used YAMB to extract MP4 audio tracks from the videos, just drop the file in and check extract as MP4 it just extracts the audio track.

3) Extracted the original raw video track from the MKV using MKVextract.

4) Muxed the audio and video tracks together with YAMB.

That was from a 4.06Gb file that was split into two MKV's by Gotsent which crashed just before audio extractions I assume as I had a video track and an empty wave file in the output directory, uses MKVmerge I think to split.

I guess that's a messy way to do it but it works and the output files are fine, perfect sync and lovely clear 2 channel audio.

From now on I'm ignoring gotsent. I'm going to extract the raw's with mkvextract, encode the audio with Super and remux with YAMB. Three easy steps and no F**king about trying to work out why Megui/foobar encoded audio tracks with neroaacenc just don't seem to work.

I have successfully converted several mkv files to mp4 and streamed the mp4 vids through the xbox 360 using windows media player 11.

1. I extract the original video and audio file using MKVextract.

2. use h264info on extracted vid file and set to 4.1

3. use dBpoweramp music converter to convert AAC audio to 2 channel .m4a (this was my problem step before.) dBpoweramp Music Converter At that site download the music converter as well as the "m4a codec" and "additional dsp effects" all found on that page. The additional dsp effects download will let you select 2 channel audio. This program works flawlessly for me.

4. Used YAMB to create an mp4 by adding the .h264 vid file and .m4a sound file. (made sure to set vid framerate to 23.976 and correct aspect ratio (16:9 in my case).

5. I then added .avi extension to the mp4 file and this played fine on the 360 through windows media player 11.

@J^^ :
tnx for taking the time to make the guide the guide!

@People having 1080p problems :
1080p isn't supported hence the problems/artifacts (see #2 + #11): http://blogs.msdn.co...ayback-faq.aspx

@People having problems with GOTSent :
I've used it for some time without any problems, AFTER I realized that I shouldn't select the audio codes myself. Select input, select ouput, press convert, that is it!

I think success depends on the source really.

*Another quick thing for people having problems with GotSent*

I've used it to successfully convert about 20 different .mkv files, and they stream to the 360 without problem.

One huge help for me though was renaming the original .mkv file BEFORE running it through GotSent. I had a few files that had extremely long names with lots of ".720p.hd.blah.blah.mkv", and the resulting file wouldn't play on the 360 or even my computer. Changing the file name AFTER the conversion didn't help at all. It seems that either Nero, h264info, MKVmerge or one of the other programs GotSent uses can't handle long file names. So I renamed the ORIGINAL file, reconverted with the exact some process and it played flawlessly!!!

Hope that helps at least one person.

1. Make sure you have the newest GotSent version from here : http://sentry23.goog...s.com/#download, as well as the newest version of AC3Filter (this must be installed seperately).
2. Make sure you have the newest Xbox 360 Dashboard (no idea why you wouldn't already)
3. Make sure the original video is of the 720P variety.
4. If the file you are trying to convert has a really long complicated name with lots of "." in it, just rename it to something simple.
5. Load the .MKV file into GotSent
6. Select an output directory, NOT THE SAME AS THE INPUT, could cause problems.
7. Don't change any of the Video, Audio, FPS or anything settings, GotSent has detected those from your source file.
8. The only setting I select that may not be selected by default is the Split Over 4GB. I don't have Safe Sync or Mux to Vob selected.
9. Hit convert!

Come back in a little bit and see if you have a new .mp4 file. Try to play it through the 360's Dash. NOT THROUGH WINDOWS MEDIA CENTER.

Let me know if that works.

Hello Fellow Gamers. Here's my little Tutorial. I've done several conversions & they all play great.
BTW. I didn't even use GotSent.

Make sure you have the necessary files before you start.

http://usera.imageca...l/Convert1a.jpg

Now, after all the files have been installed, the 1st Program you're going to start with is MKVExtract Gui.

http://usera.imageca...al/Convert2.jpg

You're going to separate the video & audio into 2 files.

http://usera.imageca...al/Convert3.jpg

There should be 2 individual files like so.

http://usera.imageca...al/Convert4.jpg

Now goto H264Info. The alpha version automatically changes to h264 file from 5.1 to 4.1 compliant.

http://usera.imageca...al/Convert5.jpg

You should now have another H264 file. That's the file you're going to use.
Now on to the Audio. Open up SUPER C.

http://usera.imageca...al/Convert6.jpg

After you've converted the ac3 file to AA LC, your ready to merge them together. Just remember SUPER C Defaults output to the root directory of C drive.

Now open up YAMB

http://usera.imageca...al/Convert7.jpg

Add Both files the newly redon H264 file & the new mp4 audio file.

http://usera.imageca...al/Convert8.jpg

Make sure the settings for the video are properly selected.

http://usera.imageca...al/Convert9.jpg

Remember, make sure the frame rate is correct in relation to the film. I used 23.976 with no problems so far.

http://usera.imageca...l/Convert10.jpg

Now goback to main menu & merge the files.

http://usera.imageca...l/Convert11.jpg

YOU'RE DONE. HAPPY CONVERTING.

Jagosix - That's a very good tutorial.

As an FYI, GotSent is doing exactly what you have listed, albeit with a different Audio Conversion Program. I'm not saying GotSent is any better than your method, just a little less cumbersome on the user.

But by all means if GotSent isn't working, give the above tutorial a shot. If you get one of the methods to work then you will be a very happy person. No more Re-Encoding to WMV!! Only downside is these methods don't allow 5.1 audio whereas .WMV does. But to each his own.

ejarex,

Are there artifacts in the original .mkv file? I've never had a problem with artifacts on my PC with any of the files. Artifacts on the 360 usually mean the bitrate is too high, but as you pointed out it's 720P, which probably means it's not the bitrate.

Do you have the Haili Media Splitter and the Combined Community Codec Pack installed? Cause GotSent requires that as well.

Ejarex,

If that's the case then it could be one of a few things...

1. Either the filename is too long. Did you rename the file you downloaded to something more simple before converting?
2. If that's not the case, then I've seen it happen a few times that if my 360 idle's too long at the dashboard and then I go and try to play it, it will tell me it's unplayable. I restart the 360 and bam it works.
3. What is the final size of the .mp4? If it's anywhere near or over 4gb, it won't work.

Let me know so we can try and sort this out. I like GotSent so much I want it to work for more people so maybe the developers will have incentive to work on it more...

Did you add the .mp4 file to WMP by simply dragging? Because I had the same problem when I dragged my .mp4 files to the WMP library. But I got it to work by making sure the folder containing my videos was added to WMPs monitored folders.

But now it is another. I converted alien vs predator 720p film to mp4 with GotSend, everything seemed fine, but when I was watching it went out of sync (I didn't tick "safe sync" in the gotsent before converting) but when I try converting with "safe sync" It is without sound.
Help, anyone smile.gif

I've never had a sync problem with GotSent. Maybe it is just that copy of AvP, did you check to make sure the original was in sync and that it was in sync when played on your computer? Per the GotSent website have you tried using the NeroAAC encoder instead of the one that comes with GotSent? That may help the problem.

The original file isn't out of sync  (I mean .mkv). And yeah I used NeroAAC encoder ( I put it into gotsent folder). Hmm... Maybe I shall try again to convert it.

When you have two split mp4 files, can you get the xbox 360 to play them in sequence without a break in between where you have to select the next file?

One of the (many) cool things about XBMC on the Xbox1 was the "stack" option for split files which played all sequential files automatically in order.

Hey everyone, i've been trying to get this working for a while now and i'm starting to get pretty frustrated. I can make a working playable file with GOTsent or doing it manually. The only problem i'm having is all of my videos are now stretched. Does anyone else have this problem?

Are they stretched when played on your PC as well? If not, double check the screen format option from withing the Xbox 360's media player (not media center)

Use MKVEWizard to demux h264 and ac3
Use BeLight to convert ac3 to aac (an mp4 audio file)
Use h264info to convert to level 4.1
Use Yamb to Remux both files to an mp4 vi/aud file.

Ensure you have MKVtoolnix, Haali Media Splitter, and the Nero AAC file.

Perfect results, every time. Thanks to everyone here...

I followed the steps and it works for me for about half my mkv files.

The other half get artifacts everywhere when played through the 360.  They look fine on my PC.

Steps I used:
MKVextract (demux)
Foobar2000 with neroaac (convert audio)
h264info (convert to video to 4.1 if necessary)
yamb (mux with proper frame rate)

This works for me, but like I said, sometimes there are TONS of artifacts on the 360, but the mp4 will play fine on my PC.

Nevermind didn't take so long but I am trying to figure out what to use for framerate.  Is there any way to confirm the original framerate?  I tried gspot but it's not showing the framerate

Leave frame rate blank in h264info (no changes).  Check the framerate of the original mkv with mediainfo.  Use that frame rate in yamb/mp5box or mux of your choice.

When I convert .mkv file with gotsent I got normal file, but out of sync.
If I am converting with demuxing, etc h264info alpha gives me some kind of error (I tried all versions)..

Try not using GotSent people! The idea for the program is nice but it is just not 100% complete (hence the word BETA). Not to say my method is better (origional post) but it has never failed me where GotSent has.... many times. There is also a .bat file posted in this thread that worked pretty good for me (only 2 files haven't worked so far, which is much better than Gotsent). Maybe once GotSent is complete it will be the one and only program to use... but for now... it is just too unreliable!

That's my two cents anyway....

However I cannot get any mp4 to play on my 360.  Any mkv converted or even an mp4 trailer, they all show AAC LC, etc.

however, they do not even get listed in the list of files on the 360, my h264 files and WMV/TS files show up, but nothing ending mp4, anyone have this problem?

new version of GOTsent is out. These are the new features:

"Detection of playable h264 files on the PS3/360, by courtesy of DItlew.  Thank you for the hard work!

Mpeg2 encoding of files, set by default on files that otherwise won't play on the PS3/360.

Fallback audio encoding/better error handling.

Aspect ratio set correctly on files where pixel and display resolution vary.

Command line usage: Gotsent23beta9.exe [filename/folder name]  encodes the file/all files in the folder and stores them in the GOTSent 'Outout to' folder. (GOTSent needs to be ran once normally before using this)

Many Many Many bugs fixed. "

Just thought I'd add my problems and solutions that I hope may help others with GOTSENT.

I'm running Vista Business and kept getting errors when trying to just open the MKV file in GOTSENT. To get round this I changed the compatibility to XP in properties. I also had to "RUN AS" and select administrator!

I had problems with the splitting and then files dissapearing from where they were supposed to be saved to. I made sure I had AC3 Filter and Halli Media Spitter installed.

Files would not show up on the XBOX 360 (Sharing through WMP 11). This boiled down to the long file name with . or - symbols (which I'v been able to change after conversion). If the movie is "KING.KONG.HDDVDRIP.270p" The best way I've found is to make a folder called "KING KONG" on your shared drive and put the GOTsent converted files into that folder but name them KONG1.avi, KONG2.avi, KONG3.avi. Yes it will split longer and high GB movies more than once. Also change the prefix of the file from .MP4 to .avi or .wmv to make them visible to WMP 11.

Make sure you select split 4GB option as files over 4gb won't work.

like most have said in this thread, GOTsent will open a DOS window for each process and describe in the GOTsent window what's happening.
1)The MKV File will be split (de-muxed) into an audio and video file
2)The Audio (Usualy AC3 5.1) will be converted to AAC 2 channel Audio
3)The two files will then be recombined (muxed) into a single MP4 file (if under 4gb). For KING KONG the file had to be split into three parts! To do this GOTsent runs the above procedure 3 times and creates a KINGKONG01.mp4 file a KINGKONG2.mp4 file and a KINGKONG3.mp4 file. for each 3rd of the movie.

I do usualy get an error window after each of these splits but hitting the OK button in the error window allows GOTsent to continue. This hasn't effected any of my conversions to date which include JACK JACK ATTACK, THE THING, RATATOUILLE, ALADDIN, TARZAN, BOURNE ULTIMATUM, KING KONG, STARDUST. and episodes of HEROES and LOST

One last tip is to quit out of GOTsent after each convert. I sometime had problems if i just left GOTsent open and tried to do another convert. Also make sure you delete any left over split files in the destination drive to free up space.

I think that's all my problems and fixes! GOTsent has now converted over a dozen MKV's without a problem!

I just wsh there was a way to queue up the split files so they'd play after each other.

Hope this helps!

This works beautifully for me (most of the time). I use hexedit to change the h264 to 4.1, then Belight, with neroAAcEnc to change the audio to 2-channel low-complexity audio, then use MP4Box to put it in an mp4 wrapper. Does anyone know why I can't get any files over 4 gigs to play? I'm streaming them using either ushare (linux) or windows media connect from windows. They play ok on my pc (although its too slow to handle hd). If i were to burn the files to a DL-DVD would they work?

ignore me, i just have to split the mkvs to under 4 gigs first. GOTSent works very well for me too. I've one video that plays unwatchably blocky on the xbox360 after following this process. its the only one i've got with two audio tracks though. i'll try stripping one of these out first and give it another go.

Hope this saves some of you lots of time!

not wishing to be unappreciative to the people that upload movies and TV for us to download, but...

so we don't have to feck about with countless little apps that may or may not work and jump through hoops to get the files to play on the 360, just release the stuff as avi files like normal dvd rips.

i have tried, and failed with so many different sets of apps and tutorials I have given up and will no longer be downloading mkv. What the hell do we need this format for anyway - avi is good enough for hi-def.

Or someone who knows what they are doing just produce an app that you put mkv in and get avi out, no options, no fecking about, just does it.

sorry for the rant but this just smacks of early linux when you had to be a super-nerd to use it, for no other reason than to exclude the ordinary man-in-the-street and keep it in an exclusive club. Most people will just think you are a wanker and not the great master of the PC you think you are.

MKV sucks arse and should be eradicated from the interwebs as the crapware it is.

The technology is fine it is the user that fails to mater it or at least understand the basics that SUCKS.

I mean someone invented this tool/software, spending countles hours writing code, then gave it all away for free to the entire world, of which millions have found ways to use it to their own benefit, evenn backing up digital media for others that don't have the understanding or patience to backup their own media, but yet still becuase it hasent been dumbed down to the most infinet degree, we hear comments like those quoted above...errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I'm glad it sucks.

Thats why its free, and not yet illeagle.

KlownNC, a couple of questions so we can see if we can pin down your problem a little:

Why are you splitting the files? What settings are you using in GOTSent? Any chance of a screencap of the settings you've used? Do you have NeroAACEnc in the GOTSent folder?

I am at the moment developing an application that will basically do all this for you at the click of one button.

Features include:

-Automatic decision of file splitting, eg over 4GB or is DVD9 rip.
-Application will tell you if a specific file will be compatible for xbox and ps3.
-Split files that are just above the 4GB threshold can be split  into 2 files as this is the most common reason most files dont play, all my 720p mp4s work flawlessly.
-Credits can also be cut to reduce the size for files that creep just above 4GB
-Application detects and accepts both AC3 and DTS
-Bitrate can be adjusted
-Application will be able to guesstimate the size of the audio and let user know if file is playable.
-Application is a lot more user friendly then others available

Its not complete yet but will be in a few days and posted here first.

Hey b4zzy, cani just say thaks in advance for the work you're doing on this. I'm sure I speak for may when I say that your work will be appreciated greatly.

Can I ask a couple of questions about your program?

1) Will it support 5.1 AC3 re-encoding to Stereo with Dolby Prologic II? This is a major pain in the arse for me at the moment, as currently GOTSent, (using AC3Filter as the decoder and NeroAACEnc as the encoder), seems to produce a very flat sound when downmixing to stereo.

2) Will it deal with the relabelling of the .h264 stream and demux / remux?

Awesome, thanks!

Hi,

Yes it does already does apply Dolby Pro Logic to AC3 files when converting to stereo, but not to DTS as of yet.

It does this through besweet commandline and neroaac.

I don't understand your second question but I will give it a go, The application will demux all files from MKV, convert audio, "downlevel" the video, IF required, and then mux them back up into an mp4.

In this process it is possible to choose the audio bitrate, cut credits and force split if incompatible DVD5 rip. If it is a DVD9 rip it will automatically cut the video into 2 files.

As of yet, the application has been able to convert 9 MKV TV episodes, 2 DVD9 rips, and about 7 DVD5 rips and 1 incompatible (oversized) DVD5 rip into playable files on the xbox 360.

Will just need to tweak a few things before I release it today

Congratulations on the release b4zzy, saves a lot of time and effort when converting MKV's.

Is there going to be any option in the future for the program not to split files above 4GB or DVD9 rips?

I am in the minority in that i dont stream my HD files to my 360, i much prefer to play them from DVD. I have quite a few DVD9 rips and files around 6-7GB, and would prefer to have the complete file on a DL DVD rather than have 2 DVD's and having to swap halfway through a film.

On a side note, i am using your program now to convert I Am Legend, and it is VERY quick, takes about half the time it takes me to constanly change programs and settings.

Many thanks

I didn't notice if it was mentioned or not but XenonMKV I find works for 95% of the mkvs I throw at at. Out of about 100 conversions only 4-5 wouldn't convert due to incompatible AVC and would have needed re-encoding.

Try using XenonMKV instead, I find it is a better app overall. You can change which version of MP4box it uses from the GUI which may help in your situation, amongst a lot of other audio options. Worth a shot, it's free!

I'm uncertain as to how ANYONE could follow this tutorial, could not be more vague, no instructions on what to do on each step..

Step 1: There is NO demux option in MKVmerge, only "Start muxing" which if I am not mistaken, is the opposite of what I want to do.

I'm stuck at step 1.  Thanks.

PLEASE edit the first post of this tutorial to explain steps in a little more detail.

For anyone else that is having trouble following this tutorial, here is a much better one that actually explains each step, (What a concept.)

you're gonna take a high quality mkv with 5.1 audio and convert it to mp4 with 2 channel audio?  Talk about a waste of time, at least convert to highdef wmv with 5.1 audio

Yes, going to take a high quality mkv and convert it to high quality mp4 with 2.0 stereo, instead of 5.1. Not as many people can make use of 5.1 as you might think. Not to mention converting to mp4/2.0 takes around 10-20 times less than conerting to wmv/5.1, depending on your setup of course.

So basically,we can't get 5.1 audio using Gotsent?I used WME Assistant and it gave me 5.1 audio and a perfect picture but it took 1.5 hours to convert.

People, I need help. My mp4 won't play. I demuxed the mkv and muxed it into an mp4 container (2 channel aac audio and 1080p avc video) with yamb, but it won't play. It says unsupported format. I stream that mp4 with Tversity. Here are the specs of the file:

                VIDEO:  AVC 1920x800 , 11.8 Mbps    (8,77 GB)

                AUDIO:  AAC LC - 129 kbps - 2Ch  - 48.0 KHz     (99,2 MB )

If you think the problem is in the bitrate, I don't think so because my xbox plays a sample of that video which has a bitrate of 12.3 Mbps

I really need help and been trying to watch it for a few days now and it just won't work sad.gif . It' s very important

I'd imagine it's the file size. 4GB limit!

I tried it with Gotsent this time and it works (i just stopped it after few minutes of working to get a sample).
But when it was processing the whole video i got an error at 99%. It says mp4box needs to be closed...
I don't think that there's a size limit when streaming

That's an MP4Box bug that it crashes at 99%, though it shouldn't affect the output. Why not try XenonMKV? There is an option to choose from 3 different versions of MP4Box in that.

Here is a quick and easy way to convert an MKV to an MP4 for the 360...
1. Using MKVmerge demux the video and audio from your MKV file.

wait a second -- there is no demux option.. are you saying that i should mux two different .mkv files, each with the video and audio separated? that doesn't sound right at all, so i'm assuming that's not what you meant since i've heard many cite a "h264" file and such..

i've tried the linux command line installation, the linux gui, and the windows gui, and nowhere in any menu, in any tab, in the --help option, or in the options is there anything indicating "demux".. i apologize for not exactly knowing what you're talking about, but four or five other people have had this exact same problem and you've simply ignored them. i'm about 80% sure you'll ignore me too, but what the fuck, it's worth a try, eh?

is it that i am installing the wrong version? were you using an older version of MKVmerge? all i want to know is where the option/button/command line option is to demux, that's all.

thanks in advance for any help!

you know, you really should edit your original post:

QUOTE(Mike4 @ Dec 13 2007, 05:16 AM) *
you didn't mention the fact that you have to actually demux the video first with MKVextract.  This may seem obvious, but for a beginner, this is a very crucial step.

isn't it pointless to confuse people? wasn't the point of a tutorial to help people? this guy already solved your mistake, and you couldn't even edit your post to help a few newbies out? jesus christ..

I've found something that seems to ACTUALLY WORK, and it's super easy!!!

After failing to get media player to communicate with my 360 reliably... After trying half a dozen MKV converters that either completely fail or generate a choppy unwatchable video...

I heard about a program called Vuze. All I had to do was install it and turn on my 360. My Xbox 360 shows under devices and I just drop in a MKV video and it converts it. Only downside is it takes about 3 hours to convert a 90 minute movie but unlike EVERYTHING else I've tried, it actually works!

Did I mention it ACTUALLY WORKS!
