http://www.vanillahd.com/index.php/playing...edia-player-11/
I have not tested this myself but a friend of mine has tested it and works. No Transcoding or Encoding needed
NOTE: ONLY WORKS ON WINDOWS VISTA MEDIA CENTER
-
i tired it and it got the files to show up with thumbnails but still they dont play.
however, on my vista pc side they play fine, wonder why that doesnt translate to the 360?? ive only tried xvid avi's though, maybe thats the problem, but i dont see how when they play form media center on my pc
do you know what your friend did to get it to work??

ill ask my friend to post here!....
someone try .mkv file
-
The xbox 360 will not play mkv files either. The reg edit mentioned in this article is only how to get different file types to show up in media center from a PC, not an extender device such as the xbox 360.

Sorry this doesnt work on 360.
I can play mkv files and other hd files on my PC with Vista Media Center but it wont work on the 360.

Don't post that something can be done if you've never tried it!
"I was told it works"
BAH!

This is just step one to allow you to play these file types.
You will still need to install something such as Transcode360 or VME to get the files to actually play.
This does make them appear in the list thought so they CAN be Transcoded.
On my setup with Transcod360, as soon as I did this and the files appeared, they streamed with no problem.

mkv is a container format as well as mp4. Many of the new mkv I have actually have h.264 video playable on the 360. Using a tool like MKVEXtractGUI its possible to extract the video and audio files out the mkv file and repackage them into the mp4 container using YAMB and MP4box. So far I have been able to get the video and audio working but they are out of sync.

Got it working on some other files. Subtitles and dual audio are not supported though.
