i downloade some sample 1080 and 720 videos from m$. the 1080 is displaying in a 480 area whereas the 720 is full widescreen. i am using a 30in syntax with a vga cable not component. my res is set at 1280 x 768 native res.

The "1080p" sample WMV HD files from M$ aren't actually 1920px wide; they get the full 1080 height at 1440 width, and display with square pixels on the 360 (appears squished).

Seems a bit daft that the 360 doesnt strech them to fit a 16:9 display.

Most videos let you stretch via the 'display mode' button.. WMV HD files dont seem to let you though.
M$ has this to say about it:
Anamorphic content with nonsquare pixels is currently unsupported on Xbox 360 console, and will be displayed as if the pixels were square. If you want to play such content on your console, it is recommended that you re-encode the content in a square pixel format.
