| thanks for all the input. there is one other thing I didnt mention. Has anyone taken either of these controllers apart? I would like to set it up with a on off switch for my xbox and Im assuming Im going to need some extra room inside the controller anyone know wich one has more room inside it. I guess both controllers are about the same size on the outside correct. |
Sorry, but you can not install an on/off button inside of a wireless controller. You need to actually ground the yellow wire on the controller connecter, something you aren't going to be able to do wireless. You could technically install it on the receiver box that plugs into the xbox but that would be kind of pointless.
I suggest the XIR Remote mod to let you switch the xbox on/off with an IR signal.
What is it that yoshi did on tech tv to his logitech controler to make it turn his xbox on/off. There was a tutorial on the techtv website before it got taken over by g4
Unless I'm mistaken, the yoshi thing was a universal remote fitted inside an original Logitech Wireless Xbox controller. I assume this was used in conjunction with an XIR-type device.
Hmm, sure enough, he's right. Here's a scan of mine:
On the logitech site, the names are different. One says precision and one doesn't. Is that part correct in that the cheaper non-glossy one is the analog one with more precision?
Yes I can tell Coke over Pepsi any day.

The controller believed to be "true analog" is
here, is called the "Logitech Cordless Controller for Xbox," and has part number 963279-0403 (this controller is the older of the two).

yeah I should have said less expensive. I think im going to go out and get one of the newer ones toinight.
Although I haven't tried the older Logitech wireless controller, I think the newer one is fine. I'm still considering getting one of the older ones for comparison, however.
It's highly likely that this is true.
It takes quite a while to "drain the chain" of old inventory and most vendors do not want to needlessly piss off their retail chains by forcing them to sell at a big loss.
Good idea, ArcticWolf. I'll give Splinter Cell:PT (and maybe Metal Arms) a test tonight and report my findings.

Actuall, you can. There's a great tutorial right
here on this very site.
Like I said before, I can't tell the difference. Splinter Cell plays the same as with any other controller.
muell67, those prices are in CDN, not USD (all prices mentioned before were in USD). Also, that link you sent doesn't list the new wireless controller.
A couple things: first of all, I tried out the controller on Chronicles of Riddick last night. The sticks definitely have an analog feel to them. Secondly, I decided to get to the bottom of this, and take some pictures of the controller's inside. Here are the pics, for your viewing pleasure:

Oh, and pay special attention to this one:

Now, I'm no electrical engineer, but those really look a lot like potentiometers.

| what does that mean? good or bad? |
It's definitely a good thing. =)
Thanks, I don't know why I didn't think of it earlier.

Whether it's marketing or a website error, I think we can finally put this "analog" discussion to rest. Regarding battery life: I don't know exactly how long the batteries in the old one last, but the manual for the new one states that the batteries last for 50 hours with rumble enabled, and then an
additional 100 hours after that with rumble disabled.
Final verdict? I believe it's safe to say that this newer controller is at least funtionally equivalent to the older one.
Recommendation? Whether you decide to purchase the old one or the new one, I believe you'll be satisfied either way.
Do we all agree (I'm fishing for the opjose seal of approval

)?
Yup the new controller looks good.

Okay, I suppose I stand corrected. My intention was to imply you can't do a standard on/off switch with the wireless remote like you do a wired one.
You could try to fit and rig up the sender for the RF doorbell mod, or you could try and stuff a seperate IR sender in there to send a signal to the XIR remote mod. |
Yeah. I can't wait to try this one myself. Imagine: A newer, smaller Logitech wireless controller with the ability to turn on/off your Xbox! Man, I can't wait to pop one open and see if there's room.
| QUOTE (falken98 @ Jun 16 2004, 05:49 AM) |
Be aware though that several of the first batches off the line had a high defect rate due to a manufacturing problem which has now been corrected.
After you hook it up and "connect" the controller and the receiver if the green light on the receiver continually blinks in a random sequence it is picking up RF noise and the controller won't function very well at all.
If your unit shows this problem it is defiantly a defect and should be exchanged. The problem is with the wireless receiver unit and not the controller. |
I cant believe this. I bought two of these controllers the day they were stocked at wal-mart (at least a month before their official release) and have been toiling over them forever trying to figure out what is causing the interference and why they suck so bad. So I look all around, but everbody is giving this controller rave reviews. I have a Wireless Madcatz Lynx as well and just about to return these and order two more lynx online until i read this post. The symptoms you describes hit the nail on the head so I immediately went back to wal-mart and exchanged them stating the reason and they said there was no recall for the controllers but since wal-mart rocks, they went ahead and let me exchange them. So I get back home and see an immediate difference when i plug them in, no more flashing of the LED in the receiver and it only turns on when i press a button and isnt continuously on like before.
Thanks again for this timely bit of information! Now I see why everybody loves these controllers! I like to yell!
!!!

which one was the pictures taken of??????????/
EDIT:
i found this on ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com/...ssPageName=WDVWits the newerone, and at the bottom you can see the size difference, his ad says their dual analog, but now the questions i have is the pictures you took above the newerone? do the buttons light up? dose the newer ine come with a slot for mem cards????
All the pictures I have listed have been pictures of the newer one. THe newer one does indeed have true dual analog sticks. It also has two memory card slots, although they are located on the dongle, just like all wireless Xbox controllers up to this point.

can i get a pic plz. plz plz plz plz plz
and did it come with the buttons that light up of did u mod it????
I should be able to get a pic of the dongle. And no, the buttons don't illuminate; they're just really reflective, as is the jewel.
Edit- until I get the pics posted, it looks very similar to the old one:

yes if you arent pressing any buttons or moving the sticks and the light keeps flashing randomly, then you have a defective receiver unit just like i had. best bet is to return it and get a new one.
first play with it a bit and see if you lose connection a lot and if the buttons are responsive at all. with my defective receiver unit the buttons were laggy and i would get disconnected all the time and playing emulated games was awful because using the dpad was impossible because the repsponse was terrible.
with the returns i got two controllers with good receivers and the repsonse is incredible now and i love these controllers.
did you take it back to the store or send it to logitech? Ive heard the first batch of these all had this problem so if I took it back to walmart I would just get the same thing. Im not having any problems with it though. Ive never lost connection, the light just continues to blink.
returned it back to walmart and got a new one. and the new ones were fixed.
i want ot get me one, but know stores around me sell them
dont wana buy it off the net, just in case its a defective one i cant return it...
| QUOTE (falken98 @ Jun 26 2004, 12:04 PM) |
You are probaly pretty safe getting it off the net. For one, large retailers mostly got the first batches. Also, if you order from a large online retailer the stock has probaly cycled several times by now (now only giving them the newer units).
Worst case, call logitech and describe the problem if you get a defective one - While its not officially annouced they are aware of the problem and they will ship out a new receiver unit via 2 day delivery and send a postage prepaid box to return the defective one. |
where is the cheepest place that they sell the new ones>
and i like stores, just in case i dont like it...
falken98, how did you come upon this information that some receivers were defective? Man you saved me a lot of grief. Thanks

| Very true. I'm curious: I know Logitech's "comparison chart" says that the newer wireless controller doesn't have analog sticks, but I wonder if it's an error on the site, or has this "feature" (or lack thereof) been mentioned and/or marketed elsewhere? |
it clearly show that the newer one HAS analong sticks...
does anyone know if there is a way to tell when logitech corrected the problem with the new controller recievers. Maybe the packages are dated are something. I dont want to take mine back and just get another defective one.
