Yeah what you are experiencing is a symptom of what we discussed on the other thread.
The additional drive brings levels down just enough to be marginal.
Sometimes it may be just a bit higher, and people have no problems. Other times it right at the trigger levels, and you'll get what you see.
That is, it appears to work but with intermittent problems, DDE's etc.
Now you would be fairly safe if you removed the internal drive and made a single external "removable" tray case.
That would do the job and still be within IDE spec.
You would still have to be careful about swapping drives ONLY when the AC power was removed and after pressing the ON button (with the AC off) to discharge any remaining current in the capacitors.
