Or the new philips...but that can be a risk because you could get the crappy old version.

samsungs are the most reliable as far as continuing to work for long periods of time, philips is a close second, thomson doesnt even finish the race

99.9% of samsungs read cd-rs flawlessly

one disadvantage they have is that the firmware wont attempt to read any disc withthe dvd+r booktype setting, however not all +r buners use this setting, and others can be changed in the firmware, for the most part this doesnt matter though, as most people use -r anyway, which the samsung loves

uhm - I think thomson and philips are the same on shite long term reliability.......

I bought about 3 faulty xbox's with moody dvd rom drives - all the first type of philips - they just seem to give up the ghost

Heck had one die in front of me testing it on so-so cheap dvd-r's - before I even got a chance to tweak a laser - my kids life it bloomin' dropped dead - jeez

Thomson may also be a iffy drive but a lot of thomson's out there are getting on a bit as they go back to 2001 some of them - but a "good" thomson wipes the floor on dvd-r against a good philips

OLD Philips also are hit n miss on cdr - some play cdr some don't
If a philips plays a cdr it plays it better than a samsung - I got SIMS on a cdr and one of my philips played it 101% perfectly where as my samsung jitters just a tiny bit on some of the intro fmv - not a lot but wasn't any jitter on the philips

Don't get me wrong you can still get an iffy or so-so samsung 605b

Think the best drives in order

Samsung 605b
New "clunky" philips - will wait n see if they still good in say 6/12 months

hmmmm - if dvd only needed then perhaps thomson or maybe if a good old philips is cheap enough then maybe that if it will read cdr's
personally I am in no rush to buy either of the last 2 drives

as for pc drives in xbox for reading only backup's

Liteon/sony - quick drives but not the best at reading shite media

LG - bit slower but a little better on cheapo media

Samsung - nice all rounder, but got a couple of moody ones in the past that needed returning

confusing init

blink.gif what about +RW?
Most of my games are +RW burned since i didnt find many +R that my Thomson read. And what was that about changing "firmware"?

I only got a + burner

uhm - can't help ya there I'm afraid as I only burn on -r

a samsung may work - but for some peeps it don't
I sold one to a m8 that had a +r and the sammy booted +r & +rw no problems but depends on your writer

If you got a 605b and it didn't work out then you should have no probs getting back what you paid for the 605b as they are sought after as good all rounders

Altenative is to upgrade to a dual format writer as they are getting so cheap with dual layer writers now on sale

With a dual format then you should be able to find some media type that may work ok with your present xbox dvd-rom unless it is on it's last legs

Jesus how many times has this been asked before? Samsung all the way..........

EHHHH!!!! Wrong answer! I bought a new xbox with samsung drive in it and it won't read my backups and no I don't get the dirty deic error as well. Just won't read some DVD-R's and definitely doesn't like CD-RW. So in reality any dvd drive can be good or bad. I modded an xbox with a philips drive in it and it read better than the samsung I have.
