Are there any alternatives to the Wrt54g that the firmware will work on as well, preferrably something not wireless, and less expensive?

The alternative is WRT54GS. Not cheaper.

and still wireless....

I cant have a wireless router, I live on  campus(in college) and they block access to the internet if you use a router or a wireless device. They dislike hubs and switches as well, but they cant detect those very well due to their inefficiency

actually technically they could block your router as it does have an ip address and everything that you send onto the network would come through on that ip if you had it plugged in like a router (ie: campus lan to internet port ,  your stuff in the rest ) ..  they would see it as one device if you make your pc and xbox a small lan .. thats your best bet .. example..

router internet ip 192.168.1.52 - assigned by campus lan
router local ip - 192.168.0.21 - assigned by you

your pc - 192.168.0.23 - assigned by you
pc gateway - 192.168.0.21

your xbox - 192.168.0.25
gateway - 192.168.0.21

oh and the only way they can "detect" your router is to either physically see it in your rooom or be scanning the network for more information than they should need :]

however if you just used the router like a hub and put nothing in the wan port it would function as a hub with an ip but it would put all your devices on the network , but if thats the case you could buy a 4 port hub for $20 and your all set ..  is their a reason you need to run the engine on a router ?  

get it?  

oh and yes you can shut off the wireless feature on the WRT routers and just use the ports , not that haveing the wireless on/off would do anything for you, well i mean besides hacking into someones laptop who forgot to secure the wireless card :]

The linksys can be set to passive mode, working just as another switch. Besides, you can just run the router as bridge on two subnets. The router then gets the ip from the server at campus on one side, and on the other side it hosts it's own subnet. If the server has limited one ip pr. connection point both this setup would work like a charm.

hmmm... sounds like an idea.

BTW, i do believe that the campus does actively scan for stuff that they dont like.
You know, high bandwidth usage, unauthorized routers or wireless access points.


I think I'll just get it and leave it unpluged when I dont use it.

Oh, and I want to use it instead of my comp b/c I am lazy and dont like constantly switching from my comp to my xbox, and my hub is slow as hell

Hmm.. I've been wondering.. Cna you run the Kai service on any other routers?  I mean.. isn't it just a Fireware?  I haev 2 other linksys routers but none of them are the WRT54G.  Hmm.. but both of them haev fireware updrage ablity... anythoughts?

Only way I could see them detect it is:

A - Router provides a webpage ... a simple spider can find that... can it be disabled on the WRT? (i don't believe it can be, but i've never triied alla command line on my Alchemy firmware(

B: Mac address ... which can be changed to your pc's no problem....

Other then that ... nothing I could see them doing.

what about the netgear dg834g? from what i've read they run very similar versions of linux, so would there be any way to make it work on it?

KaiStation isn't for WRT (all), it's for Linksys WRT54G/GS. So, no.
