Title: Kai Evolution Vii
Post by: flat235 on March 06, 2004, 03:03:00 AM
Hi all,

Few things here. Firstly, Kai 7 will be the public release - and should be essentially final. Just about everything which people have been asking for has now been implemented - and I'm getting set up for a solid period of testing - especially with the voice stuff - especially across platforms (win32 <--> xbox) etc.

Now, heres another thing. Sony have dropped the iLink port from the new PSX, and future PS2 hardware builds. "GUH?" you say?. Thats gonna prevent it from playing syslink games - right? Well, not quite. A couple of games (timesplitters 2 and midnight club 2) - already support syslink without iLink - by using the network adapter :D ..

Hmmm.... flat235 smells Ethernet :D ... let's go ;)

Thats right folks - Kai 7 will support the Playstation 2.. initial investigation indicates that the PS2 tunnels well - as the netcode is just copied from the online modules of the respective games.

We added the (stolen?? :P) GCN code to Kai in a matter of days, and that was a more difficult task than this. We can also recycle the built-in-mini-DHCP server which we use on the GCN's to assign the PS2' LAN addresses - so it should all be good..

Shortly, I will be posting instruction for joining a planned PS2 beta crew - it will be a tight unit of users from both PAL and NTSC areas, who will need *good* knowledge of stuff like ethereal.. more soon on that.

As concerns the client itself, I've completed the SpeeX (www.speex.org) integration at my end using a narrowband, VAD setup - and im gonna hook it up with TJ's ava client very soon.. Then theres not a lot left to do, apart from trialing the new orbital software, and, of course, giving dfunked the time he needs to complete the new website layouts.

Thanks to everyone who has supported XLink for, what will be, on the 13th march, 1 year exactly since the first xbox data was tunnelled over the xlink network. We have built, in my opinion, one of the most diverse and interesting gaming communities around - and the credit for that must go to you guys, the users. As we begin to open up Kai fully to users of the GCN and PS2, I hope and expect that the things which have made the XLink community so strong in the past will continue through this transitional period.

Again, thanks for your continued support..

TD & The XLink Kai Crew

will it work with bo-xlink?  bo-xlink is byfar the best alternative to xbox live. it stops the need to run back and forth between computer and xbox.  please add support for it and if not, create a new app for the xbox so that we dont have to run between computer and xbox.  (the goal is to make gaming online easier and more accessable and not harder and more complicated!!!!!!!!!!!!)

j4ever -

No Bo-XLink support.  Remote control of XLink RC3 via Xbox is being integrated into Avalaunch dashboard though and is supposed to be better than Bo-XLink.  <

I get a little touchy when I read things like that. This whole thing is FREE. Every homebrew application you download, is FREE.

People have LIVES. That means, wife, kids, job etc. They don't spend 24 / 7 coding new things for everyone to play with. Bo-XLink, it takes time, and effort, and skill, and the brains to do it.

TD decided this time around to stop focusing on Bo-XLink, as XBox homebrew development isn't his forte (but still, damn good effort on Bo-XLink RC2). The most frequently updated software on the XBox scene is the dashboard. It's also the most widely used. I don't know of many people who mod their XBox and just leave it with the current MS dashboard, running emulators and games from DVDs etc.

So that's why the decision was made to see who'd be interested in taking over hte production of a "Bo-XLink" clone. Naturally, the good guys at Team Avalaunch put their hands up, and they will most likely be the first to release the in-built support for XLink Kai in their dashboard (don't ask me when!). It's almost there, and I would highly encourage people to try it out when it's released, and help them weed out the bugs.

But that's not all. I'm not so sure I'm allowed to say this, but we've now gotten XBMC, UnleashX and MediaXMenu all beginning to build Kai functionality into their dashboards. As for Evox, well, they seem to have disappeared from the face of the planet (all respect to them for revolutionizing the XBox though).

You may or may not see a standalone Bo-XLink clone made by one of these teams, or maybe by some other experienced coder who we respect and know, but not by TD or Team XLink.

So please, realise that the world doesn't revolve around yourself and that there are constraints. If you do use Evox, well you can still install these dashes and use Kai from there, but I think after a while you'll get sick of that and make a switch over to an alternative...  <

When using road runner be advised with sys link games. The xbox is having problems sending and receiving packets with the newer toshiba modems. The toshiba pcx 2200 or a motorola surfboard is your best bet. This problem affects mostly voice and not being able to connect to sys link games. This will remain a problem until MS sends out a patch or just get a better modem. I had the pcx 2600 which sucked! I know have the surfboard 4200 and I'm going to try it out later. So if you have any of these problems contact your isp and see if they can get you an older modem.   <

you don't understand.  You will be able to talk through the PC version of Kai, and here it in avalaunch through kai.  Also, you'll be able to talk through the pc, and other people will be able to hear your voice through the pc.  This is a great solution to people not having xbl headsets.

for xbox users NOT in the same room as a pc, its better if you have a wireless pc headset or use the xbox live headset for games that support it.

the big change that this will mean, is that people can talk in rooms before beginning play, so they wont need to type.

users that have a pc in same room as xbox will be able to chat in all games (including halo) since there isnt any xbox interaction, its all on teh pc.

Also, yes. Halo will lag on ANY connection. It lags on LAN in you have enough players (when the corpses start to build up) but on a 10MB host (I assume you mean 10MB upload?) the lag will be minimal and pretty much as close to LAN as you'll get online. In fact, you might not notice much difference. Best thing is to play the game and find out for yourself wink.gif

Evo7 might be close but we do not know if development has even started back up yet.  TD might not even has his Internet  back up yet, and since he is pretty much staying out of the forums until it is complete, we have not idea when it will be done.

Also, there is a bete 7 or 006-2 out there, it's just not posted here.  I read somewhere in these forums that XBMC client only works with the beta that it not posted up here also.

Can you confirm this?

here is what i can confirm...

it is near completion.

there is only beta 6 "out there".

yes, xbmc's recent code allows for interoperability with kai 6.

ok, everyone needs to start donating money, manicures, dinners, massages or whatever it takes to the kai 7 code-a-thon.

The reason......because I just read an article in the Avalaunch forum where the Joker (ava lead developer) says the new Avalaunch will not be released until Kai 7 is finished.

I know alot of people have waiting longer than they had expected for the new kai.

But....

Atleast when it is released there will actually be features that we can use.  Unlike the new Xbox Live Tsunami.

I love the beta version of Kai. As long as that is working, I am good. Just take your time creating everything and making sure that it works from the get go so you don’t have to be like some tunneling apps (XBC) that need to release an update to the new version 5 days after it was released. I know for XBMC but what i don't like is to start PC side of KAI, why ?  Because if you have Full KAI directly from Xbox without KAI on PC, then anybody with a computer (PC, MAC etc.,.) with an internet connection will be able to play.

It's the best thing to have.  Don't need to work on Mac version or other, except if someone want to chat at the same time, but me when i play, i don't have time to chat smile.gif

OK my question is this - XBConnect and X-Link claim to work with any System Link software, but whenever I run them, I'm always confronted with a drop-down list of games to choose from. I read somewhere (maybe here on xbox-scene) that they needed drivers or special code specific to each game, sort of like Mame and other emulators do.

Will it be possible to play ANY system-link software on Kai? I'm specifically talking about XBox here, not PS2 or GC (i dont have lan adapters for them...yet).
Most of my emulators have system link support and I was wondering if it would be possible to play these over Kai, similar to how Kaillera works...seeing as the emu authors have already included system link ability with their emu's, is it possible to just take, say, Final Burn or FCEUltra and play against someone with the same emu/Kai version?

Think of it in terms of Mame vs NeoRageX - Mame needs drivers for each game or else it won't load them, whereas NeoRageX was developed to theoretically work with any neogeo game that came out (probably why it hasn't been updated in a while)

This is an open question btw - any advice is greatly appreciated smile.gif

Looking forward to this either way. Good luck with the release!

this app is gonna blow XBC out of the water! are you going to have a "pro" version, like with xbconnect, or are u not going to be gay and make us pay 25 some odd dollars to let us play chess with the opposition while waiting for a game to start? also, i saw the picture of the kai pc side, looked pretty tight, but how much ram is it going to take up? on my computer (pretty slow) xbc makes it run like a snail, it uses a lot of ram on my pc, does kai? also what launguege are you coding this program in?

no gay versions, we promise smile.gif (xlink will ALWAYS be free, with FULL functionality).

give kai 6 a try, all the info is readily available in the kai forum under the pinned topics.

A good question,

Yes, evo7 will support any sort of syslink game. This is a pretty unique feature of Kai:

> WarpPipe requires driver-type plugins for each game

> XBConnect does not support homebrew games (ie does not support std. IP addressing on the xbox) - so your emus wouldnt work.

It's been a pain in the ass to tunnel homebrew on xbox before, mainly through the need to get everyone on a different IP, but on the same subnet. Thankfully, Kai destroys this barrier by implementing a DHCP server internally, which supplies your xbox with a globally unique config, which is perfect for playing online homebrew. No need to play with settngs - just put ure xbox in DHCP (auto-config IP) mode, start Kai on PC, reboot box, play homebrew biggrin.gif

Im thinking that this advancement in Kai will fuel some pretty enjoyable homebrew play - as all the current emus/etc with syslink will "just work" with evo7.

TD

Sublime. Absolutely sublime.
As for Warppipe needing drivers for each game, I doubt that'll be an issue any time soon (only 3 games use lan, or something).
Now for the peeps:
I think all this talk about Kai squashing 'super tunnel software X' is a bit elitist isnt it? its not even out yet, and already ppl are sounding like ninty fans bigging up ninty's next console "it's gonna X, Y and Z, man!"

While I'm laying in wait for what is obviously going to be the best tunneling software around, lets not forget that XBConnect was the first on the scene, and it's what most tunneling people will have started out with.

Kudos to you guys developing it, and I feel for you when people say "put this in and put that in or else you won't be fulfilling my wants" - I've just started programming in C++ (wish me luck!) so that I can try XBox programming and it's true - we (meaning you guys) DO have lives!

And if we don't?  Like there is any alternative.  I certainly can't code it.  Take the time you need, keep some balance in your lives, have fun, and when it's ready - release it and enjoy a game amonst the fans.  The fact that everyone is so anxiously waiting is a testament to everyone enjoying the fruits of your efforts.

Well, if not anything else. Just knowing it will be soon sure does keep me on the XS Xlink Forums a lot waiting for the word that it can be downloaded. I would like to offer any assistance in helping to promote Kai in any way I can. Just let me know what you want, how you want it. And it will be done. Even if you need another location to host the app for new users once it is out. If you don't want money, maybe people can help this way.

Kai takes up much less ram then xbc... xbc is what is known as "bloatware" -- something that takes up much more ram then needed

Yeah, it would be nice to know once Kai 7 is out, how many hits there are for the download app. I don't think I was this excited for my first born (But I am sure I was). And I know I have not been on XS as much as I have been recently, sitting waiting (patiently) for the next big thing to happen in my life. I can't wait to kick people. So many of you are already gone and don’t even know it. Team killers (TK's), cheaters, punks, and most of all people that don't speak the same language as the game is played in. Don’t think I have forgotten you because it has been a while since it happened. The amazing thing is, this is all for us. Team Xlink has created/built from the ground up not only the best tunneling apps out to date (Kai 6 beta soon even better with Kai 7) and at the same time a family within X land. Man that sounds gay as hell, all I am saying is damn. It really does mean a lot! Thanks

Will Kai Evolution VII support Wireless connected PC for tunelling ? Since it doesn't rely on WinPcap anymore, it would be great it could work.

I really need my PC to be connected Wireless and my XBOX to be connected to my router with a wire. Don't ask why, I can't change that setup. That's the only way I can connect all my stuff given the "geography" of my appartment.
I would like to be able to use Kai and I'm sure I'm not the only one here.

What's even worse, is people who join a foreign language server (like French), and then complain/make fun of the people who speak French.  Those people should be booted.

I agree, people should respect the host.

If the host is unhappy with the way people are playing in there game they will have an option to boot them.

Whenever i join a game and the players already in it dont understand, or dont want to talk English, while im in there game i keep quiet, and play the game.

what isent nice is for 2 players who want to chat that hijack someone elses game to have an indepth conversation. (whatever there language.)

I have visions of the coundown reaching zero.

and then a message comes up.

Captain Xlink says "Screw this im going down the pub... use XBConnect see if i care"

and then i wake up in a cold sweat.

I really must look at more porn, I might get decent dreams then.

lol. Well the PS2Reality divx player had a countdown too. I remember logging on to the site during the last few seconds of the countdown (pure coincidence i swear) and it got to zero, then started going into the minus numbers...

carried on like that for the day. next day the site was down and i managed to get it from one of the mirrors.

moral of the story? a countodown will start going into minus numbers if it isn't managed properly. not that i care - i'll be sleeping.gif when it's released so i'll know what happened on sunday morning!

good luck with the preparations and break a pad (leg) - better make it a rubbish 3rd party pad, or else it could put the release date back wink.gif

Give or take a few minutes maybe though fingers crossed nothing comes inbetween us.

Man if you want me to sit there and hit the switch for yaw, I will do it. Nothing would break me from fulfilling my job. Not the wife, girlfriend, kids, dog, cats, fish, snake, and so on. It would be better service than then the US Postal Service, I would do you proud...
