Are you sure the hard drive you got from your friend is ok? I usually like using Slayer's Disc, dunno if that's even available still and doing the retail format with that - it'll only install the stock stuff you need and you'll be good to go.
As to the EEPROM deal, all you need is an unbanned eeprom and that can be transferred across to whatever, the new hard drive just needs to be locked with that eeprom being used.

An eprom reader might be alot of help to you. you can get the eprom.bin from the motherboard or flash the eeprom chip with a new eprom.bin file. I just recently bought my eprom reader off ebay, it is really a great tool.
