not sure if new weapons and such effect single player, i know they should work work in multiplayer (split-screen and LAN)

what game specifically is it? someoen can probably tell you for certain

Depends on the game. In halo 2 for example, the campain is not effected, but you get the new maps to use for Multiplayer (split screen, lan, live).

Other games, such as Crimson skies, let you use the new planes and stuff in different modes in single player.
