Title: Setting Up Live
Post by: GameDTX on March 13, 2004, 06:02:00 AM
Well, i have tried to direct connect since i do not have a router, i tried on automatic connect, nothing worked. So i checked my ip/dns/gateway on xp and wrote down all the info, then entered it on my xbox manualy. Everything seemed correct so i went to connect. Cables... YES, IP.... YES, DNS... NO!?!, i dont know why i entered everything correct, tried to restart the modem restart xbox. I did everything possible, NOTHING?! I know my DNS are correct, i just dont know why xbox dosent like them, i have tried a bunch of different dns number, nothing works. Someone told me it would be alot easyer if i used a router. So i went on ebay and got one, its coming. Is that correct, will it work with a router? The router is a "LinkSys Etherfast Cable/DSL Router - BEFSR41" it says it will work with LIVE. Any help/suggestions?  sad.gif

well, im not too familiar with that router but it might work
my friend had the same problem, but he just gave up and never signed up (instead of taking your approach)

i already have a router, since i have mulitple computers in the house,
but when i gog xbox live, i just pluged in the box straight to the router, and it worked fine, without any problems on the first try.

good luck,

If you can't connect to Xbox Live by connecting your DSL cable straight into the xbox, it must be because your ISP doesnt support Xbox Live.

I dont know what to tell you man.  If you cant even connect to Xbox Live with your DSL cable plugged straight into your box, I think you might be SOL.

SOL, what the hell is sol?

1 SOL means  (Shit Out of Luck).

2.  Conencting the cable modem directly to the XBOX and not getting a connection does not mean that it is not LIVE compatible.  What it probably means is that your providor has bound the cable modem to the MAC address of the ethernet card in the PC or Mac that it was set up with.  Many cable/DSL providors do this. It means that in-order to connect another system, or XBOX in this case, you would have to call them and have them re-bind the account and modem to the MAC address of the ethernet addapter in the XBOX.

FEAR NOT.   This is where a Cable/DSL router comes in.  Many have a feature known as MAC cloning.  What this will do is allow you to make the routers MAC address the same as the one on the ethernet card the modem was originaly set up on.  So to the ISP it is though nothing has changed.  Now the router can be configured to share the connection ammong the machines you designate.

If the router you got does not have a cloning feature then you may need to call and have the account/modem bound to whatever the MAC address is of the router.  Be warned though.  Some ISP's are aware of the MAC address ranges for these types of routers ( NON CLONING ) and if they suspect that you are tring to connect more than the original system they may want to add an extra monthly fee for the extra systems..
If possible it would be best to get a router with cloning capability.
