The other reason I'm asking is I remember someone claiming to have created a circuit for LPC mods and Live that "swaps" the BIOS (not by neurosys)

Actually if Live does a checksum on part of the actual memory to detect traces of a modified kernel, then this wouldn't work
This is a reliable way of detecting a modchip thats been turned off. Or else it could just detect that its running from different media
