He probably has a nonflashable mod and when he installed Live, it overwrote his xboxdash.xbe (which was EvolutionX) and thus caused problems. But, a simple FTP transfering will do a fix on that.

Having the dash won't cause problems, installing Live does (for a nonflashable modded Xbox)

i have found all xbox file managers are crap to copy files and games, they only work properly when you have a brand new cdrw or dvdr disk, or if u use ftp to copy them.
