Title: Xbl And Configmagic
Post by: JBNinja99 on January 01, 2003, 11:41:00 PM
okay, here is my question(s). first off, i am banned like many others. however i do posses a nice unbanned eeprom. so let me get this straight on what to do with configmagic. do i put configmagic on a cdrw and boot to it? then go in and unlock my hd, replace my banned eeprom with my new eeprom, and relock the hd? is that it? and where do i put my new valid eeprom? do i burn it on the cdrw in the data directory of configmagic?
next question...once i successfully put a new eeprom on my box, what next? i have a enigma chip on my box, but with a switch on it. and as of right now, i am running with evoX v. 108.2812. i notice when i turn my chip off, my xbox will not boot. i do have a copy of my original xbox c drive. should i just wipe the hd and put it back on to start fresh? i mean, once i get my box back on live, will i be booting to my ms dash or my evoX dash? and if so, should my switch be on or off? i'm just concerned about what i can and cannot do once i am unbanned again. like, what are the no-no's about bieng modded and playing xbl? i know that once i do get back on live i am never to access my ms dash with my chip on.
so, when i am unbanned...if i want to play a live game, should i just turn off my chip and start the game? and if i want to play a backup or access my games off my xbox hd, just turn the chip on and boot to evoX?
i know this is a lot of stuff, but any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks alot.

Your Xbox doesn't boot when the modchip is off is because your xboxdash.xbe is probably EvolutionX. And, it might also be a case of your HD not being locked.

Configmagic does everything for you. Just follow the configmagic.ini file that comes with it to find out where to place things.

To play on Xbox Live, turn modchip off, boot Xbox, and load original game.

To play a backup, turn modchip on. With modchip, be sure NOT to access any Live tabs on the MS dash or in a game.

Since you are running the Enigmah and with Live, the MS dash MUST be xboxdash.xbe, you will have to run EvolutionX off a CD.

okay, well booting to my original msdash won't be a problem, i can change all that in evoX. and when i need to access games, i can do that with evoX on a cd. so basically, my chip will be off pretty much all the time then. just put in a live game, and boot up with my chip off.
now with evoX on a cdrw...here's my question. occasionaly, when i boot to evoX on a cdrw, it won't boot. sometimes it will take 4 or 5 times to boot. now if say it does not boot to evoX...and goes to the msdashboard...will i be allright? just as long as i do not access any of the tabs? that is my main concern. in accessing evoX via cdrw, i know it may screw up and that is what i am worried about.
and lastly, about the configmagic.ini file...what all do i need to change? just where the eeprom .cfg and .bin files are? as of now they are set to EEPROMBinFile = "D:\data\eeprom.bin" and EEPROMCfgFile = "D:\data\eeprom.cfg"...which is where they are. do i need to change the screenX or screenY offset any? or the xbox version any? thanks again.

Common problem with EvolutionX discs. But, you aren't understanding. In order to run the EvolutionX CD, you need to have the modchip on. You must not play Live with the modchip on. If your Xbox doesn't boot the EvolutionX CD, and the modchip is on, and it goes to the MS dash, don't play on Live.

For the input and output specs, I set the paths to C:\eeprom. But, since you might be booting the unbanned EEPROM off a CD, follow what the default specs are. Don't worry about the cfg file. Leave the offsets alone. Leave the version alone.

Yes, in order to play on Xbox Live, your HD has to be locked because the original BIOS wants a locked HD

another thing shanafan...do i need a password for my xbox hd? or can i just unlock it with configmagic, and then when i lock it after replacing the eeprom just assign it a password? thanks again.

Just use Configmagic. It is such a great program and it tells you the password too

shanafan...me back again...couple more questions...
i am having trouble launching configmagic from a cd-rw. is it allright to launch it from the xbox hd? put it on evoX and launch it from the menu? also, i have configmagic beta and beta 2. however, beta 2 will not launch. either from a cd-rw or from the hd. only beta will work. will this be a problem? i'm not sure what version of xbox i have...i know it is first generation though...it was one of the first one's purchased.
now, just so i don't screw anything up...as of right now i have the evoX dash on my xbox. is it allright to keep evoX as my dash? or should i put the original msdash back on? like, can i put configmagic on my hd...launch it, change my eeprom...and still be alright? i'm still a little confused on what i can and cannot do.
can i keep evoX on as my dash...turn the chip on...and boot to evoX without a problem? and then if i want to play a live game, just turn my chip off and boot to the game? will i be allright like that?
and finally, just to clarify...when using configmagic...i go in, unlock my hd...load eeprom from .bin file...and lock it and i'm done...right? just want to make sure. thanks for all the help.

like, i don't ned to use on-the-fly edit eeprom, or update xbox eeprom right? just unlock the hd, load eeprom from .bin file, and then lock it and i'm back on live correct? thanks so much again.

If your Xbox is unbanned, you need to update your EEPROM will an unbanned one. So, you need to use the Update EEPROM command in Configmagic.

Yes, you can run Configmagic fine from the HD. Beta 2 doesn't work? Make sure you have all the proper folders, etc

To use Live successfully on a modded Xbox, you must have a switch. To make this sound simple, with the modchip switched off, Xbox will load xboxdash.xbe which is the MS dash. Play originals on Live.

With the modchip switched on, Xbox will load evoxdash.xbe (for example) and you can load backups. Do not however access any Live tabs within the game.

okay, i have a modded box with a switch on it. but i notice if i turn the chip off and boot, i get the error message. will this be a problem? i can launch live games no problem with the chip off. do i even need to be able to launch to the ms dashboard? i have an old enigma chip.
and with configmagic...beta 2 does not seem to want to launch. i have downloaded it from many different sites...it still did not work. all the files and folders seem correct. either from a cdrw or the hd...beta 2 will not work. will doing it from beta from the hd be allright?
and lastly...it goes unlock, update, and lock right?

another thing about the two different dashes. my evoxdash is named xboxdash.xbe...and my msdash is named msxboxdash.xbe. so when i turn off my chip and boot...it goes to the 'your xbox needs maintence' screen. will this be a problem? this is my latest concern.

thanks again so much shanafan.

You get the error when your modchip is off because your HD is not locked. The original BIOS wants a locked HD.

Since you can't have xboxdash.xbe as EvolutionX, then its best to have MS dash be xboxdash.xbe and run EvolutionX off a CDRW

would i encounter any problems in having evox as my dash as opposed to msdash? what would happen if i did use evox as my dash instead of the original one? thanks again.

Well, if your xboxdash.xbe is the EvolutionX dash, not the MS dash, when your modchip is switched off, your Xbox will not boot properly because it wants xboxdash.xbe to be the MS dash.

okay shanafan...am i completely fucked now? i went into configmagic and edited my eeprom. i went to unlock hd, load .bin from file, update eeprom, load eeprom, and locked my hd. then i went and switched off my mod chip. i booted to nhl 2k3 and went to the network sign in. i got the xbox was unable to connect to live message. i tried it with a few other games, to no avail. now since i still have the evoxdash on my xbox, i turned off my chip again and booted to the xbox live disc. i tried moto gp, still unable to connect to live. then i went to the troubleshooting menu...on the xbox live dash. still with the chip off, it did the connection test. cables connected, ip configured, dns resolved, xbox live not found. wtf? did i do something wrong? i know that the eeprom that i used was unbanned. it has never even been used on live yet. here are my xyz numbers:
x: 0000 - f001
y: 00c2 - 03c0
z: 0000 - 0000
the ul and dl both show 0 kb, and the l is 0ms...same with the p.
did i do something wrong? i know when i first tried to update the eeprom, i had written the location of the .bin in the wrong place. i went back and edited it to point to the e partition on my xbox hd. next i went and loaded configmagic, and updated it to the unbanned eeprom. what did i do wrong? please help me...i'm screwed if this eeprom update didn't work. i mean, is this eeprom i just tried to update now banned? thanks again shanafan.

Well, if you get "Xbox Live not found", means you are probably banned. Maybe your source of the EEPROM was wrong

do you mean maybe i put the eeprom in the wrong place?

here are the steps i did...tell me if i did something wrong:

1) loaded up configmagic from my hd
2) went to unlock hd
3) load eeprom from .bin
4) update eeprom
5) load eeprom
6) lock hd

next i went into nhl 2k3 and went to the network menu and tried to sign in. it gave me the 'couldn't connect menu'. after being frustrated for awhile, i went to the live menu from the 'couldn't connect menu' and it did the connection process. sadly, it connected to all of them but still 'xbox live not found'.
my question is, did i do something wrong in updating this eeprom? or did i unknowingly ban myself again? the eeprom i used was a unbanned eeprom.

thanks, jb.

Seems like you did the right steps, but are you sure your source of the EEPROM was right about it being unbanned?

yeah, the guy i got it from has never accessed live on his box. he does have a chip on it, but again, has never used it for live.

did i make a mistake updating my dash to the live dashboard? i went in and removed evoX and put the original ms dash on. then i went and put the xbox live disc in and updated my dash. should i have not done this? i dunno...i'm just pissed. i really thought i was going to be able to get back on live after this.

thanks again though for all your help shanafan.

Updating your dash doesn't matter at all. Your modchip is detected when the actual connection is made to MS. Let me ask you this - when you updated your EEPROM, do you remember if you saw a different S/N than the one before?

Post by: JBNinja99 on January 16, 2003, 09:05:00 PM
i'm not exactly sure if i did see a different seriel number or not.

i do have a saved backup of my old eeprom and my old hdkey from backup in evoX. is there a way i could compare the two to see if i did or did not change my eeprom? could i backup my eeprom now with evoX and compare the two?

i mean, how do i know for sure if i did change my eeprom?

and i did access MS tabs...but i did it with the chip off.

thanks so much shanafan.

Alright, so you have your backup EEPROM. Follow the configmagic.ini and set the path for the backup EEPROM. When I mean backup, I mean the old EEPROM.

Run Configmagic and select "Update EEPROM". I THINK it will ask if you wish to update the EEPROM. Say No, but take a look and compare the S/N number of that EEPROM with the current EEPROM on the Xbox. You do that by selecting "Load EEPROM"

well the eeprom is changed. i double checked. i put the .bin eeprom files in notepad and it listed the serial numbers. they are different. am i definately screwed now?

and again, would using configmagic beta 2 matter? i used the original version.

thanks again.

Well....I guess so. Just check back here when exstazi's gives away free EEPROMS

EDIT: The versions don't matter, I used the first version and it worked fine
