The FW is on the host's side, there's nothing you yourself can do to get around that, also make sure that your xbox is found by XBC and your firewall settings are allowing XBC through to connect to other xbox's. That should solve the problem with games not showing up. Also keep in mind that some games are closed right as you join them, so it'll boot you out right away, or the host can kick ya, or whatnot.
