There is another utility available to play system link games over the internet besides GameSpy Tunnel, XbConnect and Kai. It's called xmelee. It's a win32 PC app which is brain dead to install and get up and running. It's claim to fame is a reduction in upstream/downstream bandwidth and Packets Per Second requirements as compared to xbconnect. Less lag. The pc software is free, the game server access is free. See www.xmelee.com

Umm.. If you can't get the .NET framework then you will eventually have problems with a TON of applications. All the new stuff being coded these days with MS Visual Studio is all .NET based and will require the framework installed.
If you regularly do your "Windows Update", this will upgrade your system to support .net.
xmelee has a C# UI and a C++ core communiation component. The c# UI is dependent on .net
