To find out if its the chip (I think it is) put your friends working HD in your xbox and see if it boots

The problem is the X2 BIOS you are running (known issue).

Reflash your chip temporarily to an Evo-X D.6 BIOs and use that to install the new drive, than flash back to X2 when you finish.
