Yeah, nice, and what if it ends up cracking it, even within a couple years?
Well, since the same encryption is used for virtually all electronic bank transactions, that means someone can use it to decrypt, say, the house payment you sent with your credit card. Or the money order you're sending to the family member in Florida that needs it to fix his car. And, well, if they can decrypt it, they can redirect it into a swiss bank account.
This is what appalls me about the project.... people don't care about the wider implimications of such a project. They only care about playing homebrew software on an unmodified XBox (which is a pretty frivolous reason to crack this specific key).
Read XBHacker forums. You'll read the same thing.

using a modchip to circumvent protection placed on the discs is a violation of the digital millenium copyright act.  that's illegal already.  so who cares if this is.

If bank transactions used a different encryption, I'd agree with you Armageddon. But in this case, it'd be better that it's NOT cracked. I pay bills and whatnot, and I'd be REALLY upset that I'm getting evicted because my payment was intercepted and sent off to some numbered account just so some 12-year-old kid somewhere doesn't need to install a modchip to use XBMP.

dkboanbksnd, you can already be messed up because of how easy it is to steal credit card numbers.  and that's MUCH easier to do.  ever heard of a random credit card generator?  i have one that actually works, and it's much easier than doing what you said.

Yeah, you're right, it is easier to just steal the CC number... but if they can actually intercept whatever carries the stuff that needs the encryption, they can do it in a 'mass-batch', and for a longer period of time before someone catches on.

so you're saying that there should be things that some people (the creators) know, but others don't.  tha'ts not fair.  i think if you can crack it, then you can have it.

no, i'm saying that there should be no law to prevent you fro possessing the knowledge.  like i said, IF YOU CAN CRACK IT, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO LEGALLY KNOW IT!  there is nothing wrong with it.

also, if the united states spent the $5 Billion a year that it gives to israel on its people, maybe the country would be in a better states, and no one would steal and shit.
